This was so interesting. I’ve always painted swatches on my walls first to see how the color changes from day to night. Sometimes the day color looked great but at night I didn’t like it. Luckily now sherwin Williams offers little tester paint cans so I can get several colors and test them out. It’s amazing when you get the right color on your walls how it can make you feel good. Just as the wrong color just rubs you the wrong way.

I know you left this comment a long time ago, but I spent a number of my years as a house painter, and those tester cans were phenomenal for when I had customers who had trouble with deciding what the wanted. 🙄Using those tiny paint chips alone is no way to choose color. You really need a tester sample, esp. if you're hyper-sensitive & fickle about color like myself😖.
Lived in my friend's condo that got Eastern & Southern sun☀️. In boiling hot LA🥵, it was perfect😁 & felt like a sanctuary. Her petite "greatroom" was in a reverse "L". Initially, she painted it all inclu. doors a creamy white.
🤔It didn't sit well with her, so she added a brownish faux treatment on top that gave it a slight stone, old world plaster feel. It was very calming. I came to love it. The walls seemed to disappear & feel more expansive.
She inherited a kitchen w/ 50s pine slab doors, sponge paint impression tile (w/bright white & light cool green). She added a thin pink & white striped wallpaper on one entire accent wall that you could NOT 👀see when entering🚪or from the L/R. This gave it a very charming, cottage feel.
Years later, after I moved in, she decided to paint the L/R + D/R section a light minty green😵‍💫. It 💯% changed color throughout the day. I absolutely HATED it all🥺, & ended moving out shortly afterwards.
Clothing wise, I always gravitate to a crisp, bright white. So, in another home, based on the paint chip alone, I painted all the cabinetry & rooms in similar shade. 🧐Thinking it would be expansive. Hah...
Unbeknownst to me, as no artist, it had a cool blue undertone to it. The cabinets were fine. While the walls felt very institutional & prisonlike😳. NOTHING played well w/it🤣.
My 🥰dad〰️who was much more 🎨 artistically inclined〰️painted a tall chest & his 3-panelled closet door a mod, vibrant green as an accent. It can feel remarkably warm & cool depending on light. He has a hulking Thomasville canopy bed, long dresser, & two side tables in a dark brown wood that had tiny speckles of black. Everything trimmed in brass. The green was a shock😮 at first, but it actually turned out to have a handsome "Bombay Company" vibe. 🎋East meets MCM West glamour✨️.
All this to say, if you're anything like me. 😱Scared of color, but who enjoys it. Definitely get that 🖌tester pot of paint.

For some reason this has become very popular recently. My partner and I are trying to buy a house and we keep finding recently remodeled homes where everything (walls, floors, tiles, cabinets) are GRAY. • @blackmail2459

“Modern” interior design has become the cheapest, and most popular style to use in homes. Chrome fixtures have been cheap for a long time, white paint even more so, and gray wood would hide imperfections of cheap wood flooring when it was a stain job rather than a factory made laminate. In a room with lots of sun/huge windows, a house in this style would truly glow, but there’s rarely a home that has a single big window in the first place. The result is that people want a certain aesthetic but can’t execute it properly bc of cost limitations.

Years ago when I rented my very own office space, and the walls were papered, and the paper was falling off, I stripped off all of the remaining paper and painted the walls. It was a space with 4 rooms in 500 square feet, to be used for families (in danger of losing their children) having meetings with professionals working with their cases. I wanted the space to be inviting and comforting. I worked with the ba gua (not being an expert) the best I could and used the principles of Feng Shui to my best ability. I ended up painting the "lobby" space, where people first walked in, that deep brown-purple. I thought it was brown; no. It was dark purply brown. The meeting room ended up being painted sage green. The smaller meeting room with a round table, dark spruce green. For my office with my desk, printers, computers, filing cabinet and storage, I chose an odd yellow-green-gold color called "Anjou pear." I was also working with Native families, and wanted to honor the colors of the four medicines: sage, cedar, sweetgrass, tobacco. I was so happy then when people walked into the office and looked around and said "oh, it feels SO GOOD in here!" -- not realizing the energy behind the space.

I have always leaned towards the "earth" tones for my home and accented with the "woods" tones. For me, it's always felt warm and homey. Therefore, I want to be in those spaces. I wonder if there is a psychological reason why people lean towards certain colors...my best friend always goes towards the browns and blues...no matter what home she lives in, she redecorates to those colors. Example of using black to feel cozy in a bedroom: (We're both sensitive to light, get migraines, and love water.) My sister painted her bedroom walls black, with one third of one wall painted floor to ceiling with 7 muted stripes in the colors of the rainbow (balancing the off-center window on that same wall). Ceiling remains white, for overhead airiness and indirect light. Kept original brown-blond door, trim, window, closet, floor (new remnant of gray carpet used as large rug in center of room). Cream leather armchair, gray comforter, oak dresser. She hung a few pieces of her favorite geeky art in various sizes to balance shapes and weights. It's cozy, yet feels bigger than the room's measured dimensions.

I would love it if you could demonstrate seasonal color. Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. My theory is that color choices can incorporate and also blend beautifully when done with the scenery outside. My theory is also, if the home you're designing has a longer season (out of 4) like maybe a longer Winter, then those are the seasonal colors that should be considered first. In that way, the design honors the longest season, meaning the home will be harmonious more often than not.

I don't advice on compass Feng Shui(which is the one that has to do with directions and kua numbers) but I talk about form and environmental Feng Shui, which is less about the direction, but the actual light and atmosphere you get in the room, which is always different. For example, a room facing south is generally bright, so you'd choose cooler, dimmer tones, but if there is a big building in front blocking the light, it will feel dark and cool and so you go for warmer, lighter tones,. Hope that makes sense!

When saying this, are you mostly referring to the kind of lighting (natural vs artificial) or are you also referring to the tones found in the decor of the room?

not a feng shui expert but im an artist so i know color theory and i’m a relatively good interior designer (…in the sims [and to be fair, my bedroom])
you should pay equal mind to both unless one is harder to change than the other.
if you can afford to replace all the decor but you can’t change the fact that there are a ton of windows, you design around the light.
if you’re on a furniture budget but you can move around, add, or remove light fixtures and curtains, you design around the objects.
designing around the objects you have (or want!) is usually the better plan as you can change lightbulbs and lighting fixture positions to change the warmth of your lighting!

This is hilarious to me 😂 I’m also ginger and I have fire in other aspects too, but nowhere near as much as you. I relate enough that I find it funny but not so much that I feel called out haha
I wonder if red reminds him of you subconsciously? I don’t even get along with my mother but I always include blue and white in parts of my home where I feel like I need/want calm and always in a particular aesthetic, it’s my mum’s favourite style. Thanks to my dad she only got to decorate this way a little bit, mostly in places she wanted to feel like hers, so it was never the main style of the home but I somehow picked up on her preference and replicated it in my home!! I didn’t even make the connection until she came over. My mum was so happy when she saw the blue and white in some parts of the house and told me all about how much she loves that style. I hope that one day she’ll actually get to use it!

I try to use a combination of Feng Shui and intuition when choosing placement of furnishings and colors. ???Are there certain best colors for different rooms? ??? You did talk some about how different colors give evoke different feelings. ???maybe you could do a video just on colors and moods? Thank you for these helpful videos.

Thank you so much for this feng shui colours presentation. It suddenly brought it home to me why I find Japanese/Chinese/Korean colours so alien, even though I love lacquer red and the colour of ceramics, while I love the colours used in Tibet or latin America. Please do not be offended: I really admire what you have done here, and it was wonderful that it clarified my reaction to colours to that extent. Also, the way you use lighting is...very enlightening!

What is the name (or Industry-Tone-Label) for the 2nd Blue from the Right (the one that literally turns grey under yellowish light)? It reminds a bit of "Taubenblau" (Dove-Blue in german). Also, i am wondering about other colors that radically change their appearance - or let's say "feel" - under different lighting. If you have the time and know some colors that are famous for that behavior, please consider making a clip.
    Nice work!

only if you want the furniture to stick out. it’s not a BAD thing for it to stick out, but eyes are going to be drawn to those reddish-brown tones. i suggest if you want to downplay it, you introduce as many yellow-orangey tones alongside the green and beige as possible, like painting your plants in little terracotta pots! also if you keep any real plants, also put those in terracotta pots! as a green lover, i support your endeavor to green-ify your room

We have a house where ever single room except the bathrooms, have massive picture windows with views of Green and yellow Fields in spring and a 180° panoramic view of the ocean. Oh also we live in Scandinavia so much the same weather as the UK. What color grey should I go with? Thank you. Btw I love yellow and blue. Those two are my actual favourite colours.

If Todr, ,my and my bf are painting our new apartment (bedroom, living/dining room is 1 room, and an art studio.) our favorite colors are green and purple. Help? My boyfriend wants the bedroom purple. It would be relatively light and I think if any room has to be purple the bedroom is the best option but do you have any recommendations(he wants it an unmistakable shade of purple so nothing that will read gray or white)? Also we have an art studio and I’m trying to decide on a color. I’m thinking of a cool white? Or a cool light green? I love green and I want to grow as an artist so I feel as if it could sew the right intention into the room by painting green but I’m worried it might interfere with my color choices in my paintings by affecting the light in the room? Last question, is there a color you’d recommend for a living and dining space? We were also thinking of a light green because it is comforting and relaxing? It’s our first time painting a living space so I’m trying to do a lot of research. Your time and response is much appreciated!
