- This apartment in the Barbican in London is small. Despite this, the client wanted a sofa to lounge in, so with a simple strategy we managed to fit in all the clutter, Ali with an additional 2 seat sofa, and more storage, while making the flat feel bigger than it actually is! interior design tips and before and after.

"Clutter is only clutter if you don't want it."💡This changes everything! My apartment is not cluttered. It's too small! 😂
or you are a hoarder
EXACTLY
@@SukottoX be quiet jeez
So organized "clutter" is simply you need more space 🥰
But I want eeeeeverything lol
I love this guy! Only one that doesn't shame precious things! I hate it when those that tell you to declutter literally tell you to throw away your grandmother's heirlooms. 😭
I appreciate that this guy is real
Heirlooms can also give joy.
YES.
professional organizers only suggest getting rid of things for people who are literally drowning in stuff, and so they help people keep some things but declutter less important items.
@@ros8986 most of the time yes, but I’ve seen some really heartless takes from some of them.
Also, living in a really small space means that everything has to have a purpose, some a dual purpose. That wall of storage is brilliant!
Oh my goodness, I have a issue with storage as well. When you said "time capsule" it hit me like a brick of why I have been keeping items I don't access in such available spaces. I am used to having keep sakes and memorabilia accessible, but I truly don't need to. Such a simple concept, I just needed someone to help change my POV
Very often we make compromises to our spaces simply to allow cupboards to remain accessible, yet we only open them once a year or less, its a quirky solution I admit, but definitely worth considering if necessary!:)
@@DearModern very true! Thank you for taking time out of your day to respond. Your videos are very helpful, and you have a way of simplifying the topic for someone who is very new.
I have read about Swedish death cleaning and practice partially by taking pictures of memorabilia items that I can have on my "cloud". Easy access whenever I want and actually more practical since it is possible to find even by searching text f.ex. if what I need is on a page in a book I had. I even digitalised old photos. So I keep only necessary, really precious items.
‼️ I recommend a hope chest or a memory chest for anyone who has a lot of sentimental items they just don't want to throw away. My great-grandmother had one, my grandmother had one, my mom has one and now I have one. It's usually a large wooden chest that's placed at the end of the bed and all of the keepsakes like stuff your children make you or pictures or cards from birthdays, handmade blankets etc go in. And usually a cushion is placed on top of it and since it's at the end of your bed you can sit things on it or sit on it to put your shoes on. So that way it has one place for all your sentimental items so they don't get misplaced or lost and all of the stuff is hidden and it looks really nice and put together. Plus you get a second use out of it as a sitting place. It doesn't have to go at the end of your bed that's just where everyone in my family puts it. If you're the type of family to take your shoes off at the front door it could look nice around that area too. And because of it's limited size it also kind of keeps you from becoming a hoarder as well. If something doesn't fit in that box then you don't need to keep it. So it's easier to part with larger items since you already have a bunch of sentimental stuff stored away you don't feel the need to keep literally everything. ❤️
@@WhitneyDahlin Now I want one! It would be perfect if it had a key, like those old chests in the homes of very old people that are living here in Croatia. They tended to be quite big, and would often follow up a newlywed girls into their new homes. Everyone had their chest instead of their wardrobe or closet. Yes, those were also meant for siting on. Wouldn't it be nice if I would get myself a way smaller chest where I could keep the things I love the most? Those crochet doilies my grandma made, so numerous you couldn't fill all the available spaces in the mansion no one of us have, should definitely use between a third and a half of the space. My final thesis at college. That 20 page story my cousin had handwritten for me with half the pages being her beautiful drawings. The 4 notebooks I have been writing in before going digital. A little chocolate box with the jewellery I had as a teen should go there too. Those 5 little things I collected because I expect at least one of those to become expensive in 30 or so years when today's kids start seeing the things they destroyed or lost in the childhood as expensive memorabilia. All the physical photos of my family that I have could go there. And with every passing year, I could add new things there or nothing at all.
How big is your box? Where did you get a large chest from? I was thinking of measurements of 70*70*50 centimeters or something of the similar volume. Also, I could save digital things, especially the things I wrote, on the cloud and the USB sticks, which would of course be moved somewhere else with time and that thing being added to the chest. My brother and I have been talking of collecting all the photos we made of his son with our cellphones on one place, like the cloud or the USB and then give them to him for his 18. birthday. Maybe I should just buy the USB, tell him and my mom to send me the pictures thru the Bluetooth, and then just put the thing on the USB. If I would have the chest, the USB would definitely be there. What kind of stores sell those chests? I now really want to know where to go! Oh, gush. It never happened to me to suddenly just want something so much.
Such a brilliant chap. How did he manage to fit more furniture n additional storage, yet making d flat looks bigger?!?!?!!! Beyond me.
It’s all about using vertical and horizontal space in the wall. If you notice the cabinets are white which blend with the wall color. White tricks your eyes to look bigger
He put doors on the open storage, so when you look at it , it's all seamless white , not all the different colours of the stuff they had. Makes a space seem bigger when it's all one pale colour.
It's called "cleaning up", lol, instead of having her stuff all over the place, she now has cabinets to put it in, making the flat look clean and hence more spacious.
I like that you were very respectful of their stuff, and accommodated their lifestyle into their new decor.
Right?? He’s such a kind and respectful person. I really dislike the videos where the “decluttering specialists” come in and be like “All your beloved belongings? Trash!”.I find that attitude quite disrespectful, even if they are talking about literal trash.
@@dorsvenabili5573exactly! That’s what I liked about Marie Condo! She told them keep it if it sparks joy and if it doesn’t… thank the item for its service and do away with it…
These (mostly for trash this series…) "professionals" are often time very disrespectful because they want the most shocking story and a drastic outcome that will keep people in front of their TV!
It’s just not real and that leaves a bad aftertaste… that’s why I am very happy to have found this guy! He is genuinely nice and trying to help!
While at IKEA: "Plastic plants are only good for collecting dust." Hilarious.

Death to plastic plants!

I like the idea of putting storage behind the sofa. Very clever. It's refreshing and exciting to finally see someone who appreciates that, in the real world, simply getting rid of things is not always the solution to clutter or small spaces.
My main priority tends to be accessibility, but sometimes some things don't really need daily accessibility, they need to be put away but still accessible outside of a storage unit. It's really refreshing to see someone who acknowledges that, and acknowledges (and has clients who do as well) that it's a solution and compromise that works well for *them* and for many of us. And also that it's an evolution. Even if they live there the rest of their lives, their priorities might change, and so will how they set up that apartment. I've been able to evolve just my room a lot in the last five years and even as it's more cluttered sometimes, it becomes more accessible and interactive in the way I need it to be, despite there being more stuff.

I think the most beautiful part of this design is that in giving her storage to contain her supplies, you gave her room on the wall to display more of her art.
thank you to the client for allowing you to film the video because I really do love being able to SEE in video format how the concepts work!
I stopped the video to come here and say how I laughed aloud when you threw the brown square things representing clutter. HILARIOUS!!! I just discovered your videos and they’re so informative but your sense of humor, just the best!
loved that part too. so unexpected. i giggled.
Not me reading comments then the clutter drops in... lol😅😅😅😅😅
Same 😂!!! Hilarious. And it made the point as well. The fact that he actually cut out those little clutter squares is next level.
I love this guy too, he is so funny!!!
I hope he lives & works in London (like me) that would make me so happy!!!
Loved that part as well! And isn't that how clutter accumulates ? We just toss it about!
Love two basic inquiries from Cass of Clutterbug
1) where would I look for it?
2) would I even know I have it?
- then find the logical place for things - and cull less desirable multiples!
What I learned from living in a Tokyo shoebox apartment for 5 years
1) you never have too much storage, more is always better
2) go up. There is a lot of empty space on walls under the ceiling. Your cabinets don't need to be a tall as you are, they can be 2.5m and provide ample space.
Are you 3m tall?
@@solb101 no, but I have this thing called a chair to stand on an reach things high up. Mind blowing, right?
@@IreneWY Incredible! I misinterpreted your words. Was thinking the other way round. 😂
The wording “not as tall as you are” can imply shorter rather than taller, where “not only as tall as you are” implies it being taller (for anyone else who may be struggling to wrap your mind around the wording)
More of this please, this is a great video
Thanks! It definitely takes longer to make than the usual tiktoks haha
Agreed! Very informative as well as satisfying
It’s insane what a difference turning the table diagonally made! Blows my mind. I never would have considered that.
This guy needs a show on Netflix!!!!!
Those little furniture pieces that you arrange in the drawings make me really, really happy for some reason! They're so helpful for people who need the extra visual. How do you make those?
I am pretty sure they are 3D printed!
You can use foam board and glue to make them. Grid your space out and arrange away!
3d printer
yeah those lines come from 3d printers
Bet you'd love a dollhouse. ❤️
I was not expecting the before and after to be so drastic!! Not only did the lack of clutter add spaciousness, but turning the table really added a lot of space too! And with such a small trick!

The funny thing about Hope Chests is they were originally for a girl to gather and store the things she was going to take with her to set up her new home when she got married. I guess this their second life!
I have one and your comment about how you can use it to sit on as a bench has inspired me to put it to some casual use ! Thank You !
Mine is an" Immigrant Trunk" not a Hope Chest. My folks Immigrated from Ohio to Kansas after the Civil War
@@PaulaZF yeah you're right! Im pretty sure that's how it started with my great-grandmother. It originally had everything she needed to start off her married life. And she just stored all of her special items in there including her wedding dress. And so my grandmother did it and then my grandmother bought my mom her hope chest when she got married and then I got one when I was married! So I'm fairly sure that's where the tradition started! I think women should restart this for sure! Especially women who have a lot of sentimental items and get attached them, i think it's cool to take something with a history like this and give it new life and new purpose! ❤️

I’m an artist with lots of hobbies. My SO’s a minimalist and their hobbies are drumming and video games. We have had so many fights about my clutter, but it’s because there is no storage in our place, and I tend to custom build everything we need that take time, energy and money.
So I really appreciate that you did up the space and acknowledged that it needed better organization and for the client to keep their belongings and art supplies. 💕💕💕😭
I have a similar issue; husband is a gamer/computer engineer so he doesn't have much clutter at all, meanwhile I'm a traditional painter that's also into digital illustration, sculpting, gardening, baking, carpentry, sewing, packaging and shipping supplies, and have a dog that I purchase more items for than myself, etc etc. I've managed to minimalize lesser hobbies, but everything else that I use often (which is a lot...) I call my "organized chaos". As long as my items don't clutter up the common space, he's fine with me doing my own stuff. I also try to rotate items/hobbies out of storage to see if I still am attracted to that hobby/materials or not, if not then I just sell the items as a bundle or donate it.
I was like you but my SO left me because of this and among other things…. 😹
Same. Always going on and on about my ‘mess’ 😒
I'm a gamer and I still have a lot of clutter, lol...
But I also believe that minimalism is a silly, virtue-signaling concept and most minimalists probably have a rented storage space somewhere else for stuff they need for hobbies (or they are really boring people)...
In any case, I think a truly minimalist flat looks cold, soulless, unpersonal and dead (as in nobody actually lives in it) like a purpose-built AirBNB room.
Heck, not even IKEA and co. Shiwcase their furniture in minimalist settings!
@@amtra1778 hehe. We have a lot of the same hobbies!!!!
I think it's incredible how just turning the table 45 degrees in place just helps the energy of the room so much. I am learning so much from you.
I'm so in love with the fact that it's not just being educational but every bits that can be squeezed with humor and fun energy, they all tucked in the video so nicely

My home is as small as this.
Also has a connected living room/dinng area and a sepatate bedroom. I can't believe he just made that tiny space bigger and welcoming. 🤩
as an architect nerd I absolutely adore this place
Yes, but would you live in it?
My big hurdle I run into when trying to reorganize my furniture is that I have awkwardly placed outlets in my apartment, and only 2 of them, so if I tried to use an extension cord to "move" them into busier areas, I would possibly trip over them... Such a chore!
Can you attach the to a wall or put them on a shelf? You can use cable clips (there are removable stick on ones if you're renting) to hold the cable in place up out of the way.
Another option might be to run the cords under a rug
I have a very similar issue (I have 3 plugs in my bedroom and 1 is permanently dead, the other 2 are like 2 feet apart) so I have extension cords that I have run along the baseboard with cord hiding things, and taped to the floor/under the furniture with rugs over them
Thank you for not advocating that the resident declutters their heart and soul in the pursuit of this project!
Wow, it looks like there's so much more space now.
Loved this! Want more like it for sure! I giggled at the IKEA bit! Love your warm personality and joyous expression!

I never respected feng shui much until these videos. Goes to show how much the person who applies the theory matters- you always take a very practical approach rather than descending into superstition.
What revolutionized my thinking - the Minimal Mom talks about a memory bin where you can keep important sentimental items safe that you don’t want on display (I keep old toys and other things over the years) which also provides a container which is not permitted to overflow. I’ve gotten rid of a LOT of things I don’t use and don’t need and my home is so much more peaceful. Energy more freely moves through the space and even though I have a small house, it feels so much more spacious and of course it’s easier to clean now too!
Minimalism and Essentialism are growing to be important pillars in my life to maintain a peaceful home.
This was SUCH a good illustration of how simple changes can alter the vibe and energy of a space. I feel like I learned a lot from just this one short video. Wow.

What a transformation from simple changes. Loved this video, particularly as I lived in an identical flat in the Barbican for 2 years. It brought back lovely memories, its a very nice place to live. I had few possessions then, so I found I had enough space, but I think I too would have run out after a few years... we all accumulate more as time goes on, it's inevitable. They never factor storage into the equation when building new flats.

It's weird I never knew this was a thing, for years I have used graph paper for my room layouts, each square would represent one foot (12 inches). Someone divided people into learning styles in 4
Groups and one was “model builder”. It’s one of the less common styles. There’s also “quick starter” (wants to learn by doing/ trial and error) , and researcher (will not start anything until full research has been done, then will do a thing to completion at a speed very unlike the quick starter, and I forget the 4th one.

She has a bunch of space up by the ceiling where she could put up floating shelves with doors. Your demonstration in Ikea, made me realized why I'm always anxious 😂
Great improvement, a good outcome with minimal expense. What I can’t understand is why the blinds are pulled down in daytime. What horrendous sight are we being shielded from?
Privacy of the client!
It's impressive how nice the new layout is, but with white storage, a basic grey couch and a basic white table, the reveal felt like I was walking into an office space. For me, furniture needs to have some more character. It doesn't help that a lot of offices ARE furnished in Ikea furniture.
At least with the Klippan sofa it’s very easy to change the slipcover and ikea comes out with new ones all the time. Or if you are happy to spend a little more money there are third party companies that make made-to-measure custom covers and replacement legs for the Klippan sofa. It can make a huge difference!
What a difference just turning the table makes!
Wow that look so much better! I just can't imagine living in such a small space. I get claustrophobic.
I think you're so clever at what you do. You really are such a positive & joyful person to watch-you always cheer me up. But every time I watch a video of the tiny, impractical, inhuman spaces that developers have been allowed to build & make huge profits from I feel enraged. How it is allowed?!
This was part of the modernist movement after WW2 that tried to house as many people as possible in the shortest time. It’s among the reasons cities like London, Tokyo and sooo many cities around the world have so many shoebox dwellings for its people. They didn’t think of the psychological / mental health and relationship implications of having people living in such small spaces. This is why I also don’t like the glorification of the “tiny house” movement. It’s fine for a weekend getaway but not tooo live in. We don’t need big suburban American style homes nor do we need Tokyo style “mansions”, but humans need a healthy amount of space. I learned recently that even small fish need 1 gallon of space per fish in a tank.
@@ownedbymykitty270 Yes that makes sense in cities I guess. And of course many people didn't own very much & the capitalist onslaught to buy more & more hadn't really begun either.
But my grandparents lived in a post-war,3 bedroom, semi-detached council house. It had massive cupboards in every room,a pantry,a huge back garden for growing their own food,a huge front garden for leisure,a Raeburn I used to love making toast on a toastng fork -an outhouse & boiler for clothes washing & a coalhouse plus 2 huge sheds. Minimal affordable rent too. It was luxurious by comparison to what's on offer these days. My daughter's friend lives in a one bedroom flat+ kitchen/diner/lounge in one room. Zero built- in storage other than food cupboards & a small cupboard in the hall for coats/hoover etc. They want us all to consume but don't build space. Yes definitely stressful to live in. Now you have to rent space for your stuff in a storage company!! It's dystopian isn't it?
@@sally6074 The people that buy so much, shop at CostCo, the ones with a 70” TV’s… those people are generally above middle class and also tend to buy large homes. For the average worker, the average size of apartments in cities tend to be small.
I’m curious why she ended up choosing a Klippan sofa. I have one myself, and I bought it because of the cheapness, but there are more compact and even more comfortable designs at ikea for really not much more money. The Pärup and Backsälen two seaters have the same seat space but aren’t as bulky in the arms and back. Both are more comfortable (imo) and could have fit well into this set up.
Great solution and the IKEA experience was so cute. I would encourage the client to remove the visual clutter from her fridge for a week, to see if that feels better. Who ever started that practice has some explaining to do.
having a lot of stuff, doesn't always mean, that it is unnecessary clutter - it is just not having enough money to pay for a larger flat, that could hold all of it. It is great, that he found a solution to hold all of it, but actually make it almost invisible. Great job!
Awesome video, my friend. Very informative! Just remember to buy a better mask, since it shouldn't keep falling from your nose as you talk. Gotta be careful these days hahah
I'm sorry, that's NOT a flat, that's a room.
And I'm surprised this is London, as I saw small flats, but never this sort of thing.
Amazing job anyway, your videos are so educative!
