  • Visiting the hypogeum, or underground of the Colosseum is one of my favorite ways to see the Colosseum. You really get a sense of what it was like down there during the days of the Roman Empire.
    This visit is part of a ticket called the Full Experience. It includes a visit to the Colosseum floor, the regular levels of the Colosseum, and a one-time entry to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill AND all the SUPER sites there.
    Watch this video to see what it's like!
    NB - I filmed this in June 2021 right when it opened. Rome was really empty and it was easy to get tickets, and easy to visit. It's also why we have masks on for part of it.

    I love the thoroughness of the steps it takes to make the reservation, how long it takes to tour both the arena and underground, and the specifics of the self-tour of the Palatine Hill and Forum. ALSO the weather note, something never mentioned by video guides to folks interested in visiting these sites, only to arrive in the high tourist season of July-Aug when the heat is wilting, knowing because of this video not to try to do it all in a day, but plan for two. Elyssa covers all the bases of preparation for the Colosseum and Forum, an important feature of her videos. A tour guide after my own heart. Much appreciated!

      It's true, in summer it can be very hot and there is very little shade at the Colosseum. You will find shade at the Palatine Hill, so it's best to visit the Colosseum in morning or late afternoon, and the Palatine Hill in the middle of the day.

      Thanks a lot for watching and sorry for my late reply! There is an issue right now with the Colosseum ticketing site and they are unable to show / sell tickets more than 2 weeks in advance. I hope this will be sorted out soon but in the meantime you have two options - wait and just keep refreshing the CoopCulture website, or buy tickets through a reseller, as they will be sure to get them later when they become available. I hope that helps!

    Hi Elyssa, thank you for the fantastic videos you are putting out. I was going to ask your opinion on if you would recommend booking this direct via coopculture or via a third party that includes a speaker to talk to you as you walk around? I noticed there is information points on the way anyway so maybe booking direct is ok?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much for your kind words! If you book with CoopCulture, you can either book just a guide who takes you around without much explanation, or a guided tour. If you book with a third party, you will get a more complete tour, so it depends on what kind of visit you want and also your budget, as you'll pay more with an outside company +tour.

      If you can snag tickets to the night visit, you will love it! You also get to visit the underground, and it's very quiet and peaceful at night - i.e. not crowded at all!
      Then yes, I'd get the separate Roman Forum Super Pass which only gives access to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill, but it does include all the SUPER sites. You can read more about this here:

    Great video & thanks for sharing! Are the 4th and 5th upper levels of the Colosseum re-opened to the public already? During my 2019 visit, I bought the then " full experience " ticket which covered the hypogeum, arena, and 3rd/4th/5th levels of the belvedere. On the actual day, they told us that the 4th and 5th levels were closed until further notice.

      @Romewise  Před 3 lety

      Thank you so much for your kind comments.
      The 3rd level is open, however the 4th and 5th levels have been closed to visitors for a couple of years and they will likely not reopen very soon. They determined that there was some structural damage that made these levels unsafe and they are working on fixing that, but there is no scheduled date yet that they may reopen.
      For now, we will just have to be continue enjoying the first 3 levels, plus the newly opened underground. But you can be sure that when they do reopen the upper levels, I will make a new video for you guys!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 2 lety

      Yes unfortunately, the ticket situation is quite problematic right now. There are not enough to go around and there is huge demand. On top of that, the entity that sells tickets for the Colosseum, CoopCulture, has an expired contract and so they are just showing availability for the very immediate future. Many tour and ticket agencies sell tickets for later dates because they count on being able to get them later.
      I recommend these resellers for a better chance at getting these tickets:

      Hello Jocelyn, the way to get kids' tickets has changed. Now, you must purchase your own tickets and then on the day of your visit, you go to the Colosseum, and pick up your kids' free tickets there. There are ticket booths along the wall just outside the Colosseum and you can get them there. If they are teenagers, be prepared to show proof they are under 18.

My question is when I checked the website mentioned, I only see tickets. I have heard it is very useful to have audio guide to experience Colosseum and ruins better to understand things better. Is the ticket includes audioguide? Or do I need to buy seperately from the website?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes the Full Experience is still available but they are not releasing tickets only for the immediate future. So if you don't see availability, keep checking back. None of these tickets includes audioguide. You can easily purchase an audioguide on site.

      @@Romewise I see. Thank you for the update. I guess we will have to just get the full experience with the arena ones this time. Maybe on the next trip we will. Regarding audioguides we have been searching some info regarding that. My only concern is would the line of buying audio guide is the same as the people buying tickets last minute? I heard and also watched your videos regarding colosseum and it seems chaotic to wait. Or can you buy it seperately from a different place like where they deliver the audio guides?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 2 lety +1

      @@muratbilen5249 It's not too chaotic to buy the audio guides once you are inside. Just go in normally and ask where the booth is for getting the audio guide. DOn't worry, it's quite simple!

      @@Romewise Thank you so much for your answer. I am a bit relieved. I thought you buy the audio guides outside with the same queue as buying tickets. We just bought our full experience tickets with access to arena and super sites. We are very excited for it.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 2 lety +1

      @@muratbilen5249 Each site has their own audio guide. So when you enter the Colosseum, you can buy that audio guide inside. When you enter the Roman Forum, you can buy a separate audio guide for that if you want.

      I'm not sure why you are having this problem. I would suggest to keep trying, to try using a different browser, or if none of that works, to write to CoopCulture. You can also book via an outside tour or ticketing agency, although it will cost a bit more. Hope you get it worked out!

    Does the underground smell, like of mildew or mold?

      No not at all. It's actually more open than "underground", so there is chance for odors to accumulate.

    Hi Elyssa! My husband and I are leaving this Saturday for Rome and we have been watching many of your videos over the past few weeks! One question we have: currently we have full experience tickets with an Italian tour. Unfortunately, we don't speak Italian. If we can't score tickets for the English tour, we planned to just buy an official audio guide and use it with Rick Steves' app. Today, I noticed there's an official Parco Colosseo app that offers free audio guides, numbered 1-6 (arena and above) and 101-106 (underground). I see 104, 105, 106 appeared in this video of yours. Based on your experience, do these 12 tracks cover the full audioguide locations inside the Colosseum? If so, we will just use the app (which is so much easier to use with Airpods).

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 11 měsíci

      Thank you for letting me know you enjoy my videos!
      First of all, if you have a tour booked, you can't just leave the tour. It's not possible to visit the underground on your own and wander around.
      However, I have heard from many visitors that they book the Italian tour because they can't get the English tour and sometimes it can happen that the guide realizes that most people on the tour do not speak Italian, and sometimes either offer the tour in English or at least offer some of the information in English (if they do have italian speakers on the tour, they have to give it in Italian, but if they have time, and are so inclined, they could offer some info in English also.)
      I would suggest using the Parco Colosseo app's guides also. However, I have never used it to visit the Colosseum so do not know if it covers everything, but I would imagine it does.
      I'd suggest downloading the guides and bringing them with you, but just realize you can't go on your own through the underground.

    Unfortunately they closed for individuals. Nowadays you have to book it months before to go with a group.DO NOT GO THERE AND BUY THE NORMAL ENTRANCE TICKET! Because you won't have access to this floor. Only with a tour leader you can go.

      Thanks for your comments. It's true it's impossible to purchase any tickets on site now. All tickets must be purchased in advance.
      The individual tickets are indeed available, however, due to extreme demand and short supply, it's often hard to find those tickets.
      I have an updated video all about Colosseum tickets in which I talk about this. I'm sorry you were not able to get the ticket you wanted. Thanks again for taking the time to comment about your experience.

  • @DigitalconversationsAustralia

    Dont book with these guys. We booked the underground tour in teh AM and they moved it 4 hours later which we cannot do as we leave Rome. they refuse to refund us. So be warned!! they dont care about customers (but happy to take your money). Absolutely terrible experience!!!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před rokem

      That's terrible! Whoever you booked with should have offered you the option of moving the time or the option of refunding your money.
      Did you book with Get YourGuide, Viator, TripAdvisor, or a similar company? Or did you book directly with a specific tour company?
      I would escalate this and make sure they refund your money. I would suggest you also take it up with your credit card company. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience in Rome and specifically with this tour. I hope you can resolve this and at least get your money back.
