I feel similarly. Having played both 1.d4 and 1.e4 they're both fun and interesting.
I dont understand it. Does it matter which one of the two openings you play?
@@puck6380 Well, it doesn't matter IRL, because you can play both, but if you were to forswear one of them, it would matter, because of the positions that you can get playing them. Magnus explained it quite well, e4 has more variety in the positions that end up on the board.

Really tho, other than questions like "would you share your cake to your opponent?" Or the inside joke "how does a knight move?" That are all meant to improve the mood of the already mentally fatigued players, these kinds of questions are more sensible.
Such wonderful answers. The players were clearly so happy to receive such a question
NOt really,, If I'm losing by 3 points, you better don't ask me this question...

Happy to see Nepo get to smile a little. It's been a rough tourney for him and he's been a champ through it, but some of these questions that get thrown at him are just downright rude.
problem is people want every question to be "serious" but at some point you're just gonna run out of important things to ask with the length of these press conferences. Might as well throw in some light hearted questions instead of dumb shit like "are you still trying to win?"

Ive never understood why normal players get so heated up by this. e4 is clearly superior in every way, but d4 is easier to play and requires several times less knowledge and theory to get comfortable positions from. Neither opening will make or break you as a player. Nor does it make you better or worse than someone else for choosing one or the other

Even as a spectator, I also appreciate the different question. And as a (mostly) e4 player, I appreciate the answers.
Indeed this is a better question than the usual. I am not an e4/e5 player but a d4/c4/c5 because of the reasons they specified; not going for e4/e5 is just less complicated.
Best question of the championship series by a country mile! Thank you Anna.
I'm with you. I love Anna for that question.
0:20 Translation: Finally an actual question we can have a decent answer to.
it was a joke question and they ran with it
Maurice Ashley emanates such a cold and friendless vibe these days. He was glaring that question down, possibly expecting another Andrea âhorseyâ intervention. Anna Kramling is awesome. Super nice to see Ian get to have fun for a moment during these press conferences.
Still a better question than "will you try to win?"
The one question that Magnus had to really give it a think.
Magnus sounds disappointed. He knows that e4 is the correct answer in his head, but his heart says d4.
It's clear that he hated both options.

Such a nice and wholesome question, more of these!
In game 6 Carlsen played e4 in move 110.

Nemoâs been telling people exactly this for so long. I played d4 for 10 years, I started playing e4 last week after hearing the same message so many times from the people with the greatest credentials.
d4 is just more boring :D because they dont play very aggressive - you can make d4 quite aggressive aswell :D but if d4 is played it ends up mostly defensive sadly
Very nice question. I prefer to hear these kind of questions.

This is the chess version of âfinally some good fucking foodâ
*Ashley scans the crowd for other cyborg threats
I'm just curious why they never play Nf3 for the opening. It's such a sound move, even Alpha Zero liked it.
Because Nf3 is too non-committal. e4 and d4 have clear plans attached to them. Nf3 is very flexible and in the hands of an engine, that flexibility is deadly but for a human, it doesn't engineer enough of a solid plan, especially when it gives your opponent flexibility themselves on how to tackle the centre.
Kramnik loved it
not that I know jack compared to most players but I would assume this is because your essentially giving the other player the opportunity to play what they want, maybe not necessarily what you have planned for. As nepo said, e4 is more forcing? Just my thoughts
Maybe they dont have much experience with it and want to stay in comfort in such a stressfull situation? Idk, just a guess
probably cause it gives your opponent a lot of flexibility
Believe it or not, this was one of the least dumb questions they've been asked during this championship.

well not really, if you play with white you can only play on odd moves, therefore 110 is your opponent move ;)

For a a second I thought Magnus was gonna roast here for not asking a question ab the match, but great question from Anna đ
I would have liked to hear Maurice Ashley's answer too.
e4 is better for piece developmentâs sake for either the white queen or the kingâs bishop. For me, g1-f3 is best, followed by e2-e-4, then h1-h3 to prevent my knight from being harassed by the enemy bishop. Then mirror this on the other side. If my opponent is playing white and opens with d2-d4, I will always open in response with d7-d5 to prevent any further progression of that pawn!
g1-f3 is kind of a weird move ngl
Oh, you mean Nf3. My bad. Weird notation anyway
