  • Today is the day I reveal a little secret of mine. "The rule of the square" is something I learned about when I was a kid, but I didn't really get it. After all these years, I still haven't managed to understand the rule!
    Luckily, you and I can both learn more about the rule of the square in my app, Magnus Trainer!

When people really master a skill, not just chess, the fundamentals become so ingrained that they arrive as a gut feeling rather than a conscious thought. I notice how much Magnus says things like "I feel" or "I intuitively knew". A lot of my favorite instrumentalists and people who are highly skilled at some other hobbies I have speak similarly. Can only put time in and dream of reaching that level of mastery in something!

      @Johnsli Před 3 lety +26

      Even if he didnt say what the rule actually is, I kinda got it anyway. Basically if he took the queen one move earlier the king would be taking the queen on the C file and be one square closer to H file and would be able to catch up with the pawn and take it as it became a queen, whereas now as he moved the queen back to B, the king was also in B file instead of C and had one square extra to move and not get to H file in time. I imagine this will be intuitive for most chess players at this level and not really having to remember the rule itself.

    • @paulkerrigan9857
      @paulkerrigan9857 Před 3 lety +26

      @@Johnsli Yes exactly. On the chess board there are the same number of squares vertically as diagonally; if a pawn has to move 5 spaces to become a Queen, and the king is 5 diagonal spaces away from its final spot, then the pawn can be taken.
      So basically draw a square from your pawn’s position to where it can Queen. E.g. a 5x5 square. Is the king within that square? If yes, you’ll have to distract the King somehow, to get your pawn past.

    For those who get confused (like i did hahaha), the rule is about when you have a pawn you can promote and want to know if the opponent`s king can take that pawn, just imagine a diagonal to the end of the board in this way forming a square from that diagonal, if the opponent´s king is inside that square it means that that pawn can be taken otherwise if it´s outside of the square he can´t take it (Hopefully my explanation helps, please forgive me if I made grammar mistakes, my English is a work in progress hahaha) :)

He makes no arrogant claims, he also tacitly explains the nature of blitz games, honestly signalling that Grischuk would never find himself in that position - or make such a decision - with more time on the clock. The true lesson he buries inside his modest analysis of his own "Rule of the Square" understanding is that - as he puts it - nothing is absolute.

      I agree. As he says, there are no absolutes in chess, and this is why this is a very instructive tutorial

      A bit late of a reply but the rule of the square is an actual thing. Basically if say the white h pawn is on h5, that means it is 3 squares away from promotion. What you then do is imagine a line from the pawn going (in this case) 3 squares to the sides, then 3 squares up. This will make a square. If the king is inside this imaginary square it can stop the pawn from promoting. If it's outside it it can't

Basically in endgames, you simply take the number of moves needed to promote a pass pawn, and form a square with the number of moves starting with the pawn as the bottom corner. (bottom left or right depending on the position). If the enemy king is in the square, it is able to capture the pawn, but if it is outside the square, the pawn promotes to a queen

    I think the square is calculated by how many spaces the pawn is from promoting. It uses that distance as the sides of the square. If the enemy king is inside that square (or right on the line) after his move, you will not be able to promote. If it is just outside, run.
