in 2023 everyone raved about the costume design in the barbie movie but the film that wound up impressing me the most was actually poor things. set during the end of the victorian era, poor things had a unique aesthetic that combined fashion trends of the 1890s with other time periods what are you favorite outfit worn by bella baxter in poor things?

@@donatellastraciatellaThe movie is neither feminist nor sexist. It's about the life of Bella Baxter. One individual life and the beauty and the horror in this life and to some extension also a representation for our life. I think the Movie was never marketed as "this is an empowering movie for all the women. It's the staple of feminism and its discourse" I think that came from the audience and the media but the trailers never conveyed this message. Atleast the trailers in my country.
The movie is not for everybody. It has weird characters, over the top costumes and a disturbing premise. But thats a reason why movies, books, etc. are existing. To be creative and think about stuff that is disturbing and grotesque.

@@legopussy2363It has definetely feministic topics but I think that Feminism is not the main message the movie wants to portrey but a lot of people just grade the movie based on how feministic the movie is and therefor say its a bad movie.

My mum is a seamstress for film and TV and she made the white ruffle blouse featured multiple times in Portugal. She is insanely talented in period costume, and I wish she was credited for her hard work, but 99% of the time it is only the designers who are credited.

Being Greek and seeing how much visually Yorgos Lanthimos has improved is so satisfying and I am happy his getting recognition even though not all his works resonate with me.
From his '90s MVs to the 2000s VERY wtf movies, like Dogtooth, to the more known later movies, like The Lobster and now Poor Things, there is a huge visual shift in the shots, camerawork, costumes, scenery, sets, etc. and his collaboration with Holly Waddington just clicks, it works just right. Maybe his movies are not everyone's cup of tea, but he has always had a vision and this must be recognized. Holly is an amazing costume designer with her own vision as well and I loved every single garment in this movie, and I am so happy you made a video about the costuming.

I think the lack of corseted looks does not automatically imply that they were considered torturous by the movie or their characters.
Seems to me thar at first, she is a human in development and movement is everything for her so any kind of restriction or limit is unwelcomed even if it is supportive of her or her development. Much like a toddler does not appreciate parents restricting something that could potentially harm them or is downright dangerous, even if it is for their own good. Anyone spending time with a toddler knows what I am referring to.
Then when she is getting older, she is more of a teenager and corsets might be appealing visually but on one side, she is starting to oppose and become actually rebellious and not just childish. And therefore, she is exploring her own identity through fashion often wearing unpopular or controversial silhouettes.
On the other hand, she has an adventurous spirit and is constantly running away to try new things, from all “adults” or people in charge. So she would not take the time to dress herself in a corset which was typically al item of clothing that would require practice and ability to get into; or someone else to help.
Much like a bra when you are young, it seems a bit like a hassle, specially when you did not requiere one as a child; and as you start adolescence as a girl, you are suddenly told that you need to include it in your dressing routine.
In conclusion, I do not think it is hate about corsets but a commentary about maturity and control over one’s body as a woman in a patriarchal society.

Love to see an analysis of the costume design! When I watched the film that was all I could think of and focus on (and also that the film was a marriage plot/romantic comedy story). I ended up writing so much about the costuming on my letterboxd, I couldn't believe how much I had written just rambling on and on. Absolutely one of the most thrilling examples of costume design in cinema in a while, it reminded me of how audacious Eiko Ishioka's designs for Dracula must have been. I personally felt like a lot of these costumes could be on the runway now--- Thom Browne, Simone Rocha, Margiela, Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons. I hope the leg of mutton sleeves become a trend!

I wouldn't use phrases like "When she was still Victoria" or "Going to the bridge she once slid from" since they are two different characters.

Only costume choice that rubbed me the wrong way was her outfit when she discovers Lisbon alone. She’s wearing those tap pants that resemble a nappy and she’s walking is like a toddler. And that’s right after she finished furious jumping. I love the rest of the costuming, but that one with the context at hand was a bit too much.

Great vid. I'm now sad they didn't include the deleted scene. I think that could have saved this movie for me. It's visually beautiful, but unfortunately, I would not watch again.

Control is just an illusion. No one really has control over anything except for the clothes you wear. Even then you might get addicted to it which makes you lose the only thing you can control. I know I sound like a super villain but most villains have reasonable motives.

@@blueberrymilk9201 yup. Shopping is considered a type of addiction. You spend a lot of money to get a rush and pleasure of buying ‘drugs’ in this case clothes.

i know this is outfit analysis, but i think the scene where she's wearing all white, symbolizing both wealth AND purity and finally exposed to the horror's of the world thanks to Harry, i interpreted the blood on her mouth (thought it is Harry's) as Bella "losing her virginity". Bella's body isn't a virgin, but her mind was

I think the corset thing could just be that Bella likes to have a full range of motion. It's kind of like how she sticks to the tap shorts for a good part of the movie. She doesn't like extra stuff getting in the way. While corsets weren't how we depict them, they are somewhat inhibiting to move in. It could also be that Bella wants to be able to dress herself. Corsets can be difficult to do up on your own and by asking for help she's almost admitting she's not mature enough for the world, seeing as corsets were worn by adults and not young children. She also probably enjoys being able to quickly undress and redress.
