in 2023 everyone raved about the costume design in the barbie movie but the film that wound up impressing me the most was actually poor things. set during the end of the victorian era, poor things had a unique aesthetic that combined fashion trends of the 1890s with other time periods what are you favorite outfit worn by bella baxter in poor things?

Itâs my favourite browser!
As I watched this movie and realized what the costumes were doing, my jaw dropped. The âmisuseâ of the garments made for a contemporary look that I was obsessed with
I was obsessed. Same with the architecture, everything is done so well
Refreshing to see a video, not on the poor things is sexist/feminist discourse, but on the beautiful costumes. They are definitely creative and worthy of praise!
The production design is absolutely exquisite!
But still...
â@@donatellastraciatellaThe movie is neither feminist nor sexist. It's about the life of Bella Baxter. One individual life and the beauty and the horror in this life and to some extension also a representation for our life. I think the Movie was never marketed as "this is an empowering movie for all the women. It's the staple of feminism and its discourse" I think that came from the audience and the media but the trailers never conveyed this message. Atleast the trailers in my country.
The movie is not for everybody. It has weird characters, over the top costumes and a disturbing premise. But thats a reason why movies, books, etc. are existing. To be creative and think about stuff that is disturbing and grotesque.
â@@Isabelle-hv6ny The move is feminist though? The ideas the movie plays with align with the ideas of feminism.
â@@legopussy2363It has definetely feministic topics but I think that Feminism is not the main message the movie wants to portrey but a lot of people just grade the movie based on how feministic the movie is and therefor say its a bad movie.
I hope you understand what I meanđ
the costumes of this movie can totally fit in the Met Gala 2022 theme
Which is interesting becasue literally no-one else's did
@@myriadsims7637 and don't forget Emma Stone was forced to show up in a flapper LV dress
My mum is a seamstress for film and TV and she made the white ruffle blouse featured multiple times in Portugal. She is insanely talented in period costume, and I wish she was credited for her hard work, but 99% of the time it is only the designers who are credited.
Brava to MOM! My mom sewed all of our clothes & let me design many as I grew up. Just the sound of a sewing machine makes me smile. An art that is now being revived, although fabric can be difficult to find.
Poor Things was a real visual experience! Costume Designer, Holly Waddington really did her homework on the costumes from the time periods and looking amazing to wear. She deserved that win on costume designing at the Oscars 2024! Itâs a real wonder for the eyes!!!
Even though I usually prefer color, my favorite Bella outfit is the short black coat with the gray tight-high socks and black boots. It's just so academic and stylish.
wake up babe another moderngurlz outfit analysis. praying for sugar & spice next
Can't believe someone besides me remembers that movieđź
Ooooo I remember that movie too
I thought you were talking about the drag queens đ
I assumed Bella didn't wear a corset because of issues with dexterity, I wear corsets a lot and you have to be quite flexible and nimble to lace into one on your own, and she's still getting used to her body
I love the structured blouses with puffy sleeves. I NEED THEM ASAP!
Hi!
@@yashikasahrawat Hello
I would pay a heart and brain for one
Thank you so much for touching on the non restrictiveness of corsets! itâs very refreshing to not hear âcorsets are terribleâ
I want more costume designers like Holly, she married (literal) insanity to wonderful period pieces. It was a marvel!

"Miss Ethel, were you ever mistaken for a man?"
"No Charley, were you?"
BURNNN đ„
Not sure if youâve ever made a video about Crimson Peak but I would LOVE to watch that!
Yesss this would be perfect
You are sooo right, i would love to see that
yesss pleaseee â€
Iâll bet that no one here remembers what on earth the plot was or what that movie was about, or even the main characters names, but we all remember those big awesome sleeves
This was super helpful. I was bothered by the movie when Bella walked around in her underwear and it seemed like no one noticed. Having the breakdown of child-like, half dress, structure, and progression really made me appreciate the storytelling through fashion more.
When I saw this movie I immediately thought "moderngurlz has got to make a video about this" and HERE IT IS đ thank you
Being Greek and seeing how much visually Yorgos Lanthimos has improved is so satisfying and I am happy his getting recognition even though not all his works resonate with me.
From his '90s MVs to the 2000s VERY wtf movies, like Dogtooth, to the more known later movies, like The Lobster and now Poor Things, there is a huge visual shift in the shots, camerawork, costumes, scenery, sets, etc. and his collaboration with Holly Waddington just clicks, it works just right. Maybe his movies are not everyone's cup of tea, but he has always had a vision and this must be recognized. Holly is an amazing costume designer with her own vision as well and I loved every single garment in this movie, and I am so happy you made a video about the costuming.
Honestly, the layers in her skirt doing the weird dance had me completely.. It is so gorgeous and it moves beautifully âïž
I think the lack of corseted looks does not automatically imply that they were considered torturous by the movie or their characters.
Seems to me thar at first, she is a human in development and movement is everything for her so any kind of restriction or limit is unwelcomed even if it is supportive of her or her development. Much like a toddler does not appreciate parents restricting something that could potentially harm them or is downright dangerous, even if it is for their own good. Anyone spending time with a toddler knows what I am referring to.
Then when she is getting older, she is more of a teenager and corsets might be appealing visually but on one side, she is starting to oppose and become actually rebellious and not just childish. And therefore, she is exploring her own identity through fashion often wearing unpopular or controversial silhouettes.
On the other hand, she has an adventurous spirit and is constantly running away to try new things, from all âadultsâ or people in charge. So she would not take the time to dress herself in a corset which was typically al item of clothing that would require practice and ability to get into; or someone else to help.
Much like a bra when you are young, it seems a bit like a hassle, specially when you did not requiere one as a child; and as you start adolescence as a girl, you are suddenly told that you need to include it in your dressing routine.
In conclusion, I do not think it is hate about corsets but a commentary about maturity and control over oneâs body as a woman in a patriarchal society.
Love to see an analysis of the costume design! When I watched the film that was all I could think of and focus on (and also that the film was a marriage plot/romantic comedy story). I ended up writing so much about the costuming on my letterboxd, I couldn't believe how much I had written just rambling on and on. Absolutely one of the most thrilling examples of costume design in cinema in a while, it reminded me of how audacious Eiko Ishioka's designs for Dracula must have been. I personally felt like a lot of these costumes could be on the runway now--- Thom Browne, Simone Rocha, Margiela, Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons. I hope the leg of mutton sleeves become a trend!
I was hoping you would make this video! The cinematography, sets and costumes in Poor Things were absolutely beautiful, it's the aspect of this film we don't talk about enough.
As much as a Barbie fanatic I may be, even I admit that the costume design deserved the Oscar.
Some of the most whimsical and pretty costume design I've seen in recent years! The film was so visually stunning (minus all the frankenstein stuff) đ
One small detail I loved in this is that the costumes for Hanna Schygulla (her friend on the cruise ship) look like the ones she wears in The Marriage of Maria Braun.
It felt like a fun little nod to Fassbinder since the movie was visually so inspired by him
The way I have been WAITING for this analysis âš
I have been patiently waiting for you to come out with a fashion take on Poor Things!! When I saw all the puffed sleeves I was like, âHAS MODERNGURLS SEEN THIS YET?!â Because in your trends video I was like, they are crazy, puffed sleeves?! But then I saw this movie and I was like âhot damn, I need to get these puffy sleeves asap!â
Great analysis as always! â€
This film is so complex and I really enjoyed your fashion commentary on it! đ„°đ
Im admittedly not the biggest fan of the costumes in this movie, but i really like all of your analysis videos so much! You hit it out of the park every time.
Hoping you do Alice in Wonderland (2010), Cinderella (2015) or The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) next!
This was a fantastic video, thank you so much! "Poor Things" has become one of my all-time favourite movies - my sister also loved it and the novel and has been urging me to read it, too - and since I had watched it several times this year (here in Germany we didnât get it until January 2024) I always wondered and hoped youâd make a video about it/its fashion - and WOW, you absolutely delivered, this was really interesting and insightful!
It's a horrible movie my God it's disgusting
OMG This was one of my faaaavorite movies last year!!!! I Love Bella so much, and the costumes in the film are amaaaazing!
Amazing analysis and comprehensive video! Loved it!
THANK YOU!!! I have been looking forward to your take on the fasion since I saw the movie!
Yay! These are my favorite types of videos from you.
Loved your video, every description and comment was interesting and gave a new vision to the costumes. I loved the movie and the costume design was just fantastic.
Poor Things has direct references to Metropolis (1927). We watched them both and love them!
"Furious jumping" đ„Čđ
GORL! The minute I saw Poor Things, I was like, âWhen is moderngurlz gonna do a costume analysis for this movie?â
10/10
having obsessed about these costumes since watching the movie, I have consumed all the content about it I could get my paws on. this is by far the most thorough video about this, so many rabbit holes to go down with all the research u put into this. thank u
This Movie is disgusting
This was one of my favorite movies last year, too bad some people couldnât put their minds into it
Most people that didn't like it including myself, are women. So for it to be disliked by the group of people it's trying to empower is very disappointing.
This movie was gross
â@@komikek it was gross
As soon as I watched this movie I couldnât wait for you to make a video on it!
this was so good, and appreciate thisđ
The research and effort that went into this video!! You are incredible â€ïž
The costuming of this movie just makes it feel so timeless
This gave me such a greater appreciation for the costumes and the story this is an amazingly thought analysis â€
I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!
Good to have a video talk about corsets and point out that tight lacing was rare. Great research and video, thanks.
The fashion designer understood the assignment, and I love it!
I waited for this video! thank you sooo much!!!
Brilliant work as always! There were actually a lot of costume elements in Poor Things that I wasn't familiar with (i.e. tap pants) so this was really enlightening đŠđŠđŠ
WAS LIVING FOR THIS MOMENT
This video was everything I needed and more!!!
YES I was hoping id see a video from Tessa on the costuming WHILE I WAS WATCHING the movie đ©·
Been waiting for this one! â€
the video i was so desperately waiting for is finally here
The costumes were incredible throughout the whole movie. And I was laughing like crazy when I heard Bellaâs terms for anything sexual like furious jumping or fixing herself to gain happiness.
oooh i was waiting for this video
The video I didn't know I needed đ loved it, ty
Iâve been waiting for you to make this video đ
I didnât like the movie but I did like the cinematography, sets, and costumes.
The turtleneck at the end has my heart â€
Great video! I would love to see an analysis of the outfits in Taxi Driver
Iâd love if you made a video about how you research and make video essays because I am trying to understand this better. Thank you!
I have been WAITING for you or Mina to do a costume breakdown đ
Absolutely loved the costumes. To me it seemed like the puffy sleeves would get bigger when she lacked autonomy and smaller when she reclaimed that
Oh yes, I was waiting for this video
I loved this movie, some things I didn't like but I loved the feel of it. I want more movies that are new and not just old IPS.
loved this movie, loved the outfits, loved the hair, the acting!
love your videos â€
I was SOOO happy seeing all those leg of mutton sleeves in her outfits! It's such a smart design choice to ensure that, no matter how many liberties they took with the fashion, it maintained some semblance to the time period by adhering to a classic 1890's silhouette.
Would LOVE to see a video from you analysing the history of Victorian fashion! So interesting
Omg finally somebody is talking about the clothes in this movie!!
I have not watched the movie but would watch it just to see these outfits and how you described their function!
Thank you for the corset point
I would absolutely LOVE! To de you analyze the outfits in 7 women and a murder, it has some of my favorite costuming for a murder mystery.s
I think you should do a video on Divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood, I mean that movie is making outfits for not one, not two but three different decades and I think it did a pretty good job, also the cast for that movie is just awesome.
I'VE BEEN WAITINGGGGGGGGGGGGG, NEXT HARLEY QUEEN OUTFIT IN JOKER FAD
Another amazing costume analysis! Can you do one for Dune 2?
This was one of the best movies ive ever seen.
Actively waiting for this video
I was thinking about you making an analysis of the costumes as I was watching the movie lmao
I love puff/ balloon sleeves
I love costumes of this movie
17 minutes into this video, I actually went and watched this for myself!
Oooo that sponsorship was so smooth
I loved the movie, especially the sapphic bits. I feel like it might have also been a reference to how Bella doesn't follow or care about being "propper" for the time period.
But my favorite part by far was the costumes! I loved her growth and how you broke it down, thanks for another great video! đ„°
Can you do a costume analysis for Black Panther?
Do you plan on making a video on your thoughts on the new 3d animated Winx Club series ?
I wouldn't use phrases like "When she was still Victoria" or "Going to the bridge she once slid from" since they are two different characters.
Please do reverse 1999 outfit analysis
I LOVEEEE ME AN ANALYZING VIDEO
27:09 I also think the big buttons on her coat is the last bit of childhood she has
Will you be analyzing the outfits in Bridgerton s3??
Bella really won đđ»
25:56 my favorite outfit in the movie
Only costume choice that rubbed me the wrong way was her outfit when she discovers Lisbon alone. Sheâs wearing those tap pants that resemble a nappy and sheâs walking is like a toddler. And thatâs right after she finished furious jumping. I love the rest of the costuming, but that one with the context at hand was a bit too much.
Great vid. I'm now sad they didn't include the deleted scene. I think that could have saved this movie for me. It's visually beautiful, but unfortunately, I would not watch again.
Control is just an illusion. No one really has control over anything except for the clothes you wear. Even then you might get addicted to it which makes you lose the only thing you can control. I know I sound like a super villain but most villains have reasonable motives.
You might get addicted to⊠your clothes?
@@blueberrymilk9201 yup. Shopping is considered a type of addiction. You spend a lot of money to get a rush and pleasure of buying âdrugsâ in this case clothes.
i know this is outfit analysis, but i think the scene where she's wearing all white, symbolizing both wealth AND purity and finally exposed to the horror's of the world thanks to Harry, i interpreted the blood on her mouth (thought it is Harry's) as Bella "losing her virginity". Bella's body isn't a virgin, but her mind was
Early does the queen respond!?â€
I think the corset thing could just be that Bella likes to have a full range of motion. It's kind of like how she sticks to the tap shorts for a good part of the movie. She doesn't like extra stuff getting in the way. While corsets weren't how we depict them, they are somewhat inhibiting to move in. It could also be that Bella wants to be able to dress herself. Corsets can be difficult to do up on your own and by asking for help she's almost admitting she's not mature enough for the world, seeing as corsets were worn by adults and not young children. She also probably enjoys being able to quickly undress and redress.
