Much like Giselle from Enchanted, I liked that the more time Barbie spends in the real world, the more practical and less girly her outfits became. The pink Birkenstocks are a neat touch that while she's now a "Real Woman", she hasn't forgotten her roots.
I also liked that her pink tote matched her pink Birkenstocks to - she's still an accessorizing queen!
I still think Giselle from Enchanted kept her girly style, she just adapted it to be more practical/everyday. Barbie seems to almost fully shed her hyperfemininity by the end (not that there's anything wrong with that)
I hated that. They should've kept it more girly
i just don't like how she loses her hyperfemininity to demonstrate character growth, as if it is something you grow off or bad. You can be like that in the real world, it doesn't define anything but style.
@@dokichamoy4965 exactly
Sasha’s outfits also have a drastic change throughout the movie. During the beginning, when she hates Barbie, she’s wearing mostly black, dark shades of clothing. In Barbieland where she accepts Barbie and femininity, she wears a pink sparkly dress. At the end she’s wearing a pink top and a grey sweatshirt, showing how Barbie had a positive impact on her but she’s still herself.
That's a very insightful observation, costumes can really speak volumes about a character and their evolution throughout the story.
Yeah I was saying that, Sasha went from black tracksuit to pink sparkly dress
She really rocked pick though
i still disliked her in the movie cuz she literally insulted our girl barbie in front of everyone. ariana greenblatt nailed the role tho! 💘
I actually like her initial outfit when she first entered Barbieland: the asymmetrical purple jacket, white tank top, baggy blue jean look. I actually like it more than her pink sparkly dress. I think it’s because it still felt like Sasha. Sasha always seemed a bit more on the edgy side without being excessively so (possibly because she’s a ref to the Bratz) Besides the giant black platforms in her final outfit, it seemed too… childish? But that’s my opinion ^^;
I think that it's neat that Sasha and her friends were all named after and costumed after the Bratz dolls, AKA, Barbie's biggest competitors.
then shouldn't she be named "Yasmin" instead of Sasha?
@@lilil9752Sasha was also a Bratz
yes, but Sasha was the black girl@@Mazou-tj4ne
@@lilil9752no, bc Yasmin is implied to be her curly haired friend. Just like her blond friend is implied to be Chloe. Just like the friend with black hair is implied to be Jade. They all fit the physical & style description. But the most convincing Easter egg is part in the Barbie movie where Gloria calls Sasha Bunny-boo. That's the exact same nickname as Sasha from Bratz, which is way too coincidental to not be purposeful lmao
Also from screenrant :
"Sasha and her friends say they have not played with Barbies since they were five years old. They moved on just like the Bratz moved on in the Barbie doll era. Barbie’s bubbly personality is contrasted by Sasha’s sassy one. The Bratz Sasha doll is known for being sassy and unafraid of confrontation, which is exactly how Sasha is introduced in Barbie, with Barbie even being warned not to go up against her."
Definitely a Bratz reference
@@magickaldust1213 interesting tidbit. Over the course of the lawsuit, apparently the creator of the Bratz mentioned that he was inspired by observing the styles and attitudes of the kids at Kickapoo High during the late 90’s/early aughts. My husband graduated in 2000. He’s a bit conflicted over the possibility that he and his friends were the reason that the Bratz exist! 🤣🤣
Barbie’s outfits really did show off her going from stereotypical to becoming her own person and having her own personality. The outfits are so beautiful and show off her personal growth truly.
Agreed, this transition reminds me of Giselle from Enchanted, in that the longer she stays in the real world, the less elaborate and more rooted in reality her outfits become.
Same for her hair. It becomes more human like
A little nice detail is that, in the yellow dress scene, she is wearing a heart locket necklace. This locket is very similar to the one that Clara in Barbie in the Nutcracker wears, which is Barbie first film ^^
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that!
Came here to say this! It’s so sweet. And that message was “you were the magic all along,” similar to how Barbie could become human all along
barbie and the rockers was the first ever barbie movie
OMG TRUE!!
@@danitydon6976loved that movie!!!!
I love how they let asexual Barbie dress in technically revealing and/or figure-hugging outfits, that don't feel sexy or like they sexualize her.
The camera never lingers on Margot Robbie's body or contorts it to "spice up" an outfit with cleavage and simply lets Barbie express _her_ feelings and mindset through colors and construction of clothing.
And I long for a world where the amount of skin I show does not equate to my availability.
wow you took the words right out of my mouth!!
Nah, say that to the tigh gap sequence in 14:15
@@spady07no? they arent showing off margot robbie’s body, she just has a thigh gap. wtf lol
@@spady07 thats just her body shape lmao what
Who’s asexual barbie? Margo isn’t just stereotypical barbie
I loved the outfits but her HAIR was my favorite “accessory” her hair is so gorgeous!! Isn’t it insane that they changed the tone of her blonde hair depending on her outfit?? I love the details.
I have a really long hair that reaches my bum and honestly the hair in the movie is why I didn’t do what I’ve been thinking about doing off and on for ages at the time and cut it all off. It’s just so pretty.
@@xXPirate-KittyXx I am currently on year 2 of growing my hair out. It’s just started to pass my chest but I can’t wait until it’s long like that!
@@xXPirate-KittyXxwell, if it is not blown out, glossed, and styled to perfection...it don't look ANYTHING like Margo's hair.
It's just dead hair laying limp.
@@barbraseville8984 Why did you even comment that? What an actual waste of time.
Agree.
Also a cute detail: When Barbie first meets Ruth, Ruth is making the gingham dress from the beginning of the movie!
I love how the movie shows a drastic difference in how women dress for themselves in the beginning versus dressing for the male gaze when the kens take over. Though there outfits in the beginning would be sexualized in the real world, The barbies wore their matching set short skirts and spaghetti straps cus they found it cute and fashionable, not for any sexual reasons.
I love this take
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254same
I love this take bc I hate my outfits being sexualized I wear alot of thrifted clothes and alot of stuff u see on pintrest like satin tube tops and corsets I wear that for myself and bc I like it and I'm constantly shamed for that especially my parents
I would spontaneously combust if I had access to Mattel Archives, making Barbiecore looks and having Chanel’s support.
I’m so glad you mentioned the parallel between the colors of Barbie’s breakdown dress and Ken’s first outfit. I thought it was such a perfect subtle yet deliberate reference that gave the perfect subconscious callback to align the characters’ experiences.
The Pantone color of the year was pink for 2023 and it was literally everywhere. Barbie coming out multiplied this by 5000 😂
The set of Barbie also temporarily made pink paint unavailable because they used so much of it for the set design
I love the pink gingham looks so much. Gingham is such a classic pattern that is timeless.
Dorothy’s blue gingham dress in wizard of oz definitely a classic
Heck even the black gingham that’s usually on flannel
This is like the ModernGurlz Super Bowl.
Yes, I'm always here for a style analysis breakdown! I had no idea that they had two versions of Barbie's pastel dress, with the less vibrant, muted one being worn during Barbie's depression induced breakdown. ♥️
Me neither - I need to see the movie a 3rd time to see if I can catch it (& all the other little Easter eggs throughout).
I’m actually so happy to hear that! I noticed it in the movie but I figured I was imagining things 😂
My favorite fit in the entire movie was her little pastel dress and hat number. I loved that over time she loses her hat and jacket and shoes and is just wearing the dress barefoot, because that’s what a lot of Barbie’s look like at home just barefoot with their hair down in whichever dress they were in
When I saw the pink Birkenstocks in the cinema I gasped and stage-whispered to my friend 'THE SYMBOLISM'
i love greta's take on barbie's style and the barbie lore so much. this could've easily looked like a tacky snl parody but the approach of taking a child's interpretation (which is the entire point of the doll) made it so beautiful in the end. the vintage inspiration especially really brings justice to the classy & sophisticated era of barbie before she became so drab (which also happened in the end but anway...) we still got those amazing visuals and costumes.
This was absolutely incredible. I watched the movie but never realized all the work that went behind the choices to better tell the story. This Style Analysis should win some kind of fashion documentary award, if that exists. The level of research was incomparable. Thank you!
I love these videos even just to go back and get more info about a movie or show, the clothing analysis is always amazing.
Barbie had some great looks, but Ken's fur coat look was my favourite. You can't tell me that wasn't inspired by Macklemore's huge fur coat in the Thrift Shop music video, even though I know it was also inspired by Sylvester Stallone's own fur coat look in the 80s.
Okay ?
ALSO! Barbie's yellow dress is SO reminiscent to Cassie's first blue dress, when she meets with the lawyer, in Promising Young Woman - another Lucky Chap movie! Their hair is half up half down, the silhouettes match, and Barbie's delicate heart necklace is Cassie's broken heart necklace. I have this theory that Barbie is Doll becomes Woman, while in Promising Young Woman, Woman becomes (sex) Doll! These pair together surprisingly well :)
Wow, I had never caught that detail of Barbie getting a taste of being in Ken's shoes by literally mirroring one of his outfits. Also I thought Barbie's rollerblade look was similarly akin to her 1996 Workin' Out outfit (which I had and it oddly came with a cassette tape).
I think what’s the most refreshing thing about Barbie it that it never tried to put down Barbie femininity, it’s never seen a hollow or mean, at the end Barbie was real world feminine, not that girl boss cool imagine movies from the 90-00 tried to sell as the role movie people should aspire.
I know she won the Oscar for it but I sure wish Jacqueline Durran had done as much work and research for Little Women as she did this movie. I will never get over that Amy's silhouette stays the same even when she is in fashion forward Paris, with a rich Aunt, during a totally different decade 😢
Yeah, as somebody very interested in historical costume, it kinda does my head in that it's the same designer here (doing a great job) and in that Gerwig version of L.W., where frankly I think she either phoned it in or just didn't do her historical research at all?? 😬 Maybe she learnt some lessons from the kickback that the original Oscar win (WTF) attracted...?
That return ro barbieland fit is essentially Barbie when you first buy the doll and the doll a few days later when you're already played around with it and lost all the accessories
I’m so happy this video exists because I wanted everyone’s outfits.
This is what America needs.
I told my brother the other day, that all these men emotionally connecting with ken, gave me hope for their future.
@@mariapaz6379for real, all the people claiming the Barbie movie hates men clearly didn’t listen to “I’m just Ken”
I think the Camper Van Barbie outfit is quite cool. I love the headband and the high trousers.
It’s honestly shocking to me that they haven’t made American girls movies already! There’s so much content for them to pull from with all of the book series!
they have made some American girl movies! I don't know if they have done them for more recent dolls but a few of the ones of the 2000s received film adaptations. i watched the 2009 chrissa one all the time when i was younger
The Samantha movie was my favorite bc I really wanted a Samantha doll 😊
I am pretty sure there are American girl doll movies !
There are a few! I remember watching kit's when I was younger
Olivia Rodrigo was in one of the American Girl movies as Grace in Grace Stirs Up Success in 2015.
I love this analysis. PLEASE do more Barbie movie outfit analysis videos I would love to see you take on the Bratz girls at the table, Ken's outfit progression, etc.
This video was perfect.
Can you make a video about the outfits in the movie "White chicks".
Oh that's a great idea
I have a theory that the end outfit is loosely inspired by that one "debimboification" comic/ drawing of a hyperfemmeinine looking girl picking up a book and transitioning to a more preppy "nerd girl" style that was circulated in the 2010s NLOG era. It seems like a parallel to her losing her "barbieness" as she learns how to be human and dressing closer to how the average millenial woman does as she learns to be imperfect/ part of the real world, or something along those lines.
Lmao wasnt that a fetish drawing
@annabellehe4307 yeah lol but more people know the reverse order version it'd be more likely to be referenced
I had seen Barbie core since before the Barbie movie had been announced. I saw it coming a bit after the y2k aesthetics popularity and also other fashionistas speaking abt it. I even had my 18th bday party Barbie themed, that was 2 yrs ago. I feel like the movie just came at a perfect timing to keep the aesthetic popular for longer and even sky rocket it but I don’t think the movie invented it
I’ve been waiting for this one!! I saw the movie three times in theaters, and every time I saw it, I picked up on a new outfit I didn’t notice before!!
I REALLY love the yellow dress, I usually don’t love yellow but it really makes her glow and compliments the pink backgrounds. I also think that since yellow is often used as a gender neutral color, it might also have to do with her dressing less hyper-feminine.
My mom had one of the original Barbie dolls in the striped swimsuit when she was a kid. She says she wished she'd kept it. It would probably be worth a fair bit of money now!
I don’t think Mattel realizes Barbie can’t be recreated. It was magic.
21:56 Of course Mattel sees the success of the "Barbie movie" not as a sign that women want more movies FOR WOMEN BY WOMEN, but that people want more movies about toys. -.-
0:29 YES! THE OG BARBIE MOVIE 😂
So happy that moment was referenced.
My favourite outfit of hers was her human brown jacket and pink sandals. She looked even more stunning as a human than as a doll!
Your style analysis videos is what made me want to prusue a career in fashion. Your videos give me inspiration, comfort, drive and most importantly remind me of how much fashion means to me. Thank you for all that you do.
My favorite outfit was her pink gingham dress and romper! Iconic and adorable!
I'm interested on how they are going to do Polly Pockets. I'm not a small Polly purist, but I do see that as my Polly. As someone who still has 2 boxes full in my basement, small Polly is also a rich and diverse world.
Plus, the building clamshells of small Polly are unmatched. The detail, the colors, the aesthetic.
The ice cream shop still smells like strawberries. Lol
not a favorite outfit, but I definitely have not gotten the golden wine glass, that Ken holds at the dance party, out of my mind
Look up Dragon Drinkware, they made that cup and a bunch of others for this movie and they’re still in stock!
I have never clicked on a video so fast!!! Completely in love with this movie
I've been wondering how you do these style analyses lately. how are you just so incredibly observant of all these little details and have amazing memory that can connect the outfits you see in the movie to one's you've seen before???? how????????
As a Barbie collector I loved the costumes and all the references to the Barbie wardrobe in the past.
I absolutely love this!! I live for your style analysis episodes. Have you ever considered doing a history style analysis? I would love to see your take on the original Dynasty show❤
The second I saw the dark blue dress Barbie wears to meet Weird Barbie I grabbed my partner's arm because I wanted it so so bad. It's so classic!
it was beautiful
Yesterday i was talking to my friends about the movie and they started talking about the birkenstock i didn’t realize that the birkenstock symbolized her flat so when i understood the "joke" i laughed so hard cause it so smart lol
As always, your analysis and knowledge of fashion history is amazing. And also, I want that checkered dress and her driving outfit SO BAD.
Lovely analysis, we appreciate the work and research you did to create such an insightful and complete observational piece💗💗🎀🎀✨✨
I'm loving these new voices!
I was wondering when we were going go hear more about the blue dress yesterday and now i see this has been uploaded 💕 cant wait to watch this fully

I've been dying to see the analysis of Barbie's outfits.
Isn't there an outfit that she doesn't look good in?
I mean, it's Margot freaking Robbie!!! She's drop dead gorgeous. 🔥✨🤩❤️
this was so good! so many deep dives!
I’ve been waiting for this thank you 😍
Loved the video 😊 The Chanel fits and accessories omgggg
The mod 60s blue dress that looks similar to Deons is my absolute favorite look 🤩 💙
This whole movie was my fav outfit girl 🫶🏼
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS OH MY GOD!!! 💕💕 LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND YOUR VIDEOS
Such a well put together video!
13:56 LOVED THE SKATING OUTFITS! Also, it’s the most West Coast/LA ensemble lol
The rollerblade look looks more like the 1991 Rollerblade Barbie line, only using Christie's outfit.
I am obsessed with your channel ❤
AHHHHH yay ive been waiting for this one forever.
Amazing video, Tessa! Thank you! Love from Brazil! ❤
Your videos are awesome and informative. It's really to pick an outfit from the movie, they all look beautiful. 💖💖💖💖

This is sooo good!!
I honestly loved Kens jacket when he comes back from the real world. The big fur jacket was so good I loved it.
TBeen waiting for this vid! Finally you uploaded. Lemme watch it HAHA
So hyped for this one 😩I HAVENT SEEN IT YET THOUGH I AM SO SAD
I remember the test of perfect costume design; if you turn the sound off in the movie, would the costumes tell you the story? This movie passes that test in spades!
Oh I’ve been waiting for this.
These outfits are fabulous 💖💗💕
Hey girlie, I would ADORE a video with your top witch movies for the upcoming spooky season
Being a good mother is the accomplishment I’m absolutely most proud of in my life.
Many, many moms feel this way.
Our animal body has evolved to procreate and protect our offspring to the best of its ability, and when I have experienced difficulties in life, I have drawn strength from my mothering instincts and the resiliency it taught me.
How inspiring.
There’s no need to chastise or be snarky toward a little one who plays out dreams of being a good parent.
This movie’s costuming is incredible!!
Actually Ken's jacket is the exact same worn by Schmidt in New Girl, who was known for having a caring heart but being a total douchebag most of the time. I absolutely loved the reference in the movie.
I just finished watching the movie and let me just say that i loved every single outfit! from the jewellery to the shoes everything was so cute stylish and not only just the colour pink but every colour you can think of 10/10^^💖 🎀👡
When the trailer came out this video was the first thing I was anticipating
Finally I have been waiting for this one!!!!!❤️❤️❤️😫😫😫💗💗💓💓💞💞💘💖💅
I love all the outfits but I really would rock the hell out of the blazer look at the end, I want it
FINALLY!!
Great job on this video!
