Considering I was never old enough to enjoy doom when it was released, it feels so good to play something new and fresh that’s doom related and made by the king himself!
Watching your own level design hero's process live is the *best* possible inspiration for your own work. I'm so glad this guy came back to doom mapping!
Oh this is awesome! So is Sigil 2 going to be like the "In-between" of Sigil and Doom 2? it looks like earth locations being consumed by hell and SIGIL 2 will end with you starting Doom 2?
oh man.. I kinda miss the time when games had map editors and/or dev tools more often. I think in some point it was almost like a standard to make those tools for games? I feel like I want to do some mapping to some game. Maybe I will pick up Doom Editor it looks fun.
Same! I never made maps for doom, but used to dabble in them for Warcraft/Starcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic, etc. It was just fun. Failed miserably with doom and Duke nukem map editing back in the day though, I could never get the hang of switching between 2D and 3D I might have to try again now that there are new dev tools.
Thank you so much for sharing these videos! I'm making a retro FPS of my own and I've been struggling tremendously with level design. Being able to watch the master himself create something from scratch is an incredible learning opportunity.
It's bad ass to see a Legend work! I know all the equipment is way different today then the stuff he was working with back in 1993 but i think it's probably better to watch him work with this equipment anyways lol
I never attempted level design on the original Dooms. This was awsome to watch. I started with the Doom3 engine. It almost seems very very similar actually
Love that abstract SIGIL style and looking forward to it in a month,. You inspired me to make my own SIGIL inspired episode named Incendio Crucio which was the 5th episode for 2022ado released last year.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse into how you build your maps. This was really interesting! I always find it interesting how small features can really change the look of an area. For example, at 1:21:14, when you added that sunken blue floor, that really tied that space together and made the room stand out (compared to just a flat brown floor) Also, I was going to ask, when you make these maps, do you generally have an Idea of what it should look like in the end, or do you just figure that out as you go? And lastly. . in the original Doom II, a scan of your head was hidden inside the Icon of Sin for the thing we shot at. Are there any plans to use another former ID members head for something like that? (For example, Tim Willits, Jon Carmack, etc) that could be a funny little Easter egg.
"when you make these maps, do you generally have an Idea of what it should look like in the end, or do you just figure that out as you go? " - he said that in the video already. this time he just figured out as he was doing it, other times he sketches the map out beforehand.
I really like the blinky light vibe at 2:29:06 but wish it shone across the expanse of the room to the opposing wall, thatd be epic B) Edit: you put a big pillar in the way lol nvm Regardless watching your process has been cool, i am glad you stream it.
I wonder when the next livestream will begin? Because I've already been working on a Heretic RPG which was my own Idea inspired by Stephen Clarks Serpent Resurrection, Blighted aura A.K.A Land of Parthoris, I even went to livestream it because of how complex it looks.
Strange, but I've never used Doom format. It's always UDMF for the extra flexibility, in case I want to use a portal or some advanced quality of life feature.
It's quite insane that we're given the possibility to watch John Romero make Doom levels.
Considering I was never old enough to enjoy doom when it was released, it feels so good to play something new and fresh that’s doom related and made by the king himself!
dude if you had told a much younger me, we'd be here watching this. i wouldve been SO pumped hahaha
Loving every second of it here. The power of the creator himself combined with modern mapping tools. It's great to watch!
It's a real treat to see and learn from the master himself.
Thank you so much for releasing this stuff publicly John its a blessing to have this in the community and just know that it is massively appreciated.
100% Agree.
Watching your own level design hero's process live is the *best* possible inspiration for your own work. I'm so glad this guy came back to doom mapping!
Don't forget playin' the completed work! :) Thank you, Romero! You are the best!
its so surreal we can watch john make maps in real time
I’m a aspiring doom mapper. I’m slowly learning, hopefully will make a map one day. These are so entertaining to watch, John!
having tried emulating romero's level design for techbase maps this is an incredible gift
Now, I do not expect that much of mapping in one video! This secret level is already awesome!
John Romero with Buckethead ❤
Oh this is awesome! So is Sigil 2 going to be like the "In-between" of Sigil and Doom 2? it looks like earth locations being consumed by hell and SIGIL 2 will end with you starting Doom 2?
22:52 epic
You are Bob Ross of map making, I love it. Maybe series for Quake1?
Te amo Jhon romero, pongo tus directos de fondo mientras teabajo
sigil 2 gonna be straight fire!!!
You certainly make the best levels.

Don't forget the deathmatch starts for Decino to memorize.
A tech veneer over wood...that's a new aesthetic.
Keep these uploads coming brotha, we're right here with ya 💯 🤘🏼💀 DOOOOOM!

What a treat this is to come across! ❤
Freaky amazing. I was 18 when Doom came out. Can't believe I'm watching this, what a time to be alive. John, you rock mate!

Tbh the Doom 3 engine level design seems veey similar
I never attempted level design on the original Dooms. This was awsome to watch. I started with the Doom3 engine. It almost seems very very similar actually
Loved Empire of Sin btw, good game.
I love your techbases man, you should make another startan episode or maybe one alpha styled episode
Love that abstract SIGIL style and looking forward to it in a month,. You inspired me to make my own SIGIL inspired episode named Incendio Crucio which was the 5th episode for 2022ado released last year.
Literally watching gaming history in the making.
Based
Even without watching the video, just listening to the music in itself, is very awesome.
Is that Buckethead? Which tracks and albums?
CANT WAIT!
This is passion at work.
Thanks

@@visionofdisorder Oh Nice, thanks! there were a couple of times I had to leave my desk so I missed hearing him say that.

Sweet!
What editor and doom renderer is being used here? Ive not edited doomll levels for years! The resolution is much higjer than originally released
So for E6M8, are we going to see an army of barons as the 'final boss'? Something other than Cybie/Spidey?

Hi, John. Hope you are doing well
👍👍👍👍
Does anyone know how you get a blue sky? is it a custom asset or ?. Thanks
so where is keen 3d, the adventure 3d platformer, like crash bandicoot
Buckethead 🔥
E6M9
nice
Nice.
Nice
❤
wow
Doom mods from scratch... 👍
the levels look like almost slaughteresque, hopefully that will not be the case... that starting room in E5M6 looks too hard
Don’t forget that Sigil UV should be very brutal. And that was a pistol start.
@@Romero666 thank you, I'm excited. The levels look even more impressive than in Sigil 1.
What are the songs, they are awesome
This is made only with original textures?
😮
John did you see the hexen remake?

The guy behind the original DooM game and inspired millions only gets 7K views and even less likes at 407 (including me).
The doggo moment was so random and amazing lol you are legend boss
Word. If someone had told me one Day that John Romero would have a cute fluffy dog, I would not have believed it. That was hilarious.
