Yeah, the experience and knowledge is showing. Some mappers put 10x more details and scope yet still cannot pair to the experience that his game design mastery provides.
you, carmack and the rest are absolute legends man. doom owned my childhood, and now that I'm an adult.. well.. not much has changed. still playing doom, still trying to make a map once in a while. thank you for everything. you guys are responsible for literally one of the greatest games ever made, and I don't say that lightly!

Really enjoyed the E6M9 series. Such a weird and awesome feeling seeing Doom maps being designed by the Doom guy himself. Can't wait to play these!

Couple of very nitpicky points (that others pointed out throughout the series):
1) At the start of the level, facing the blue carpet with the window on the left, look at the step texture wrapping around the lowered area. It is interrupted next to those "electro-pillars" at the bottom. Another way of looking at it is by facing the first window straight-on, with the tech pillars to the left and right. Look down at the step texture delimiting the floor height difference next to said pillars. You'll notice two small sectors that have a wall texture instead of the step texture. (pause between 46:20 and 46:21 for an example, and look in the lower left corner).
2) When the red-key room walls open, only one of the two walls has tracks on the side. The one closer to the red door doesn't have tracks. Pause at 47:01 for an example and look slightly to the right.
3) With the hidden switch that reveals itself to open the red key room, there's still that narrow black sector used for the lighting trick. Could be removed.
Anyway, hope I can catch some of the streams live!

wolf3d has a key door cheese, let the enemy open the door, and keep it open, with their body on the way; wolf3d original engine could have been outdoors military shooter, with sand bags, walls, bunkers and all those, normandy et al
if you are still interested, then very fast scatter lighting method is to have some approximate boundary volume, like sphere/aabb-box of all scene objects, then in some fast way render low/high resolution object z-buffered view per pixel based on the bvh volumes, then sum up the whole buffer to get the total lighting from any approximately seen pixels/sun/lights, pixels can be texture/light mapped, multiple passes to get the actual lighting interaction per pixels, relies on the fact that the per pixel scene approximate render is fast, can be usual triangle spam, re-rending the scene like with mirrors with g-buffers, but for scatter lighting in 360 degrees of view buffers, both color and z-buffers, the representation could even be a 2d sprite (single textured polygon/quad) per object, to make things simple

This is doom 1. He has said he probably plans on doing doom 2 stuff afterwards though

Friendly reminder that John owes us a complete E1 remake which include his great E1M4b and E1M8b levels and 7 others. If he don't want a complete techbase stuff, E1M8b can split the episode's theme in half, with second half involving John's vision how episode 2 should look like. In the end of the day, 3 complete D1 episodes would be the best, the complete game John envisaged back then without limitations.
What do you mean he "owes us"?
By "owes us" he refers to the Blood Pact John signed with the Shadow Lords of the previous Age, to delight Killchasers like we DooM players in perpetuity.
He doesn't owe us that, though, he only remade the specific levels he didn't originally make. He's done with that now.
Why would he remake anything from E2 and E3 too? Those were Sandy and Tom's levels. I don't think he's looking to trample what they envisioned for the game, he only redid the two outliers in what was mostly his episode.
@@CaptainResident I didn't say anything about E2 and E3 dude, only E1. Update his own levels to the new limit removing standards. The two levels don't fit at all into the original episode, because of higher details and much bigger difficulty, even in E1M4b.
