  • Delia Owens' debut novel, which has spent 166 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, was plucked from obscurity by Reese Witherspoon when the Hollywood star enthusiastically added the story of a Southern girl raising herself in the marshes of North Carolina to her Hello Sunshine Book Club. Now she's produced an adaptation of "Crawdads," one of the most eagerly-anticipated movies of the year. Owens and Witherspoon - two tomboys from the South who bonded almost immediately - talk with correspondent Lee Cowan.

My favorite thing about the book “Where the Crawdads Sing” is that the marsh felt to me like a character in the story rather than the setting. The sentence, “The marsh became her mother,” really resonated for me insofar as providing a window into Kya’s character.

This is a beautiful thought. I felt like that as well, although you phrased it so beautifully. I somehow think that in the story, Kya feels the same way. Nature is the main character in her life.

A lot of novels are so expansive that a two hour film adaptation can't possibly touch on everything. Oddly enough one exception could have been *The Lilies of the Field.* It's less than 130 pages. Yet the film's ending was so far off from what the book's was that I was pretty disappointed. The best to hope for is that not too much is changed.

I've just started reading this book today. Although I'm not a native English speaker, I was able to be immersed in the amazing story. I cried a lot after getting to know that the author wrote the story at the age of 70. The scene where Kya's mom left her family in a sudden brought me to imagination that the writer would really want to remember her mom because everyone has to lose a good or bad mom someday. Of course, the title came from the writer's mom. I eagerly expect to keep reading on.

Something about british actresses that lends itself to playing southern ladies...Vivien Leigh, Angela Lansbury, Margaret Leighton, etc. They just sort of slow down their speaking patterns and hold on to those long vowels and it's honey for the ears. And Strathairn is one of our finest actors who should be celebrated as such.

I went to school near Savannah, GA, and Kenneth Branagh's accent in The Gingerbread Man is about the closest I've ever heard from anyone. I think it's mainly because American actors get too into method acting while those across the pond focus on style and presentation. Like the old quip Sir Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman who ran 2-3 miles to appear out of breath on Mararhon Man, "My dear boy, why don't you try acting?"

I'm one of the few who do not love this book. I did enjoy the glimpses of the swamp and the main character's interaction with it but the thriller aspect just didn't mesh for me. But I will see the movie out of curiosity.

Delia Owens and Where the Crawdads Sing were discussed on Twitter today, and not for good reasons. It’s interesting that CBS Sunday didn’t touch on the controversy, even if she’s innocent and has no knowledge of that man’s death.

I agree. It’s a serious matter that should have been touched on.

Brit born but spending most of my life in the US I have noticed this. Especially southern England dialects can segway to deep south us.
In fact, when I came to the us to go to school in Chicago I stuck out and had a few (kind) nicknames for my posh accent.. I immediately started mimicking accents and as one of my friends held from the deep south it took practically no time to cover my accent.
Case in point ... it seems like half of the actors on the Georgia filmed Walking Dead (at least when I watched it in the beginning), were British or Australian. I also noted that many of our mannerisms, etiquette, meals Etc in Southern England also have so much in common with the south. To me it makes both even more charming when I note that connection!

Hi Bill, thought I’d send this piece about the movie I keep promoting to you, and because it’s CBS Sunday Morning that did it. CBS Sunday Morning is a show that Tricia loved and introduced me to years ago. I loved it too, if it’s not something you watch already you might start. Hugs, hope your both doing well. Xx

As a rule I only read nonfiction but there have been times of my life where I did read a novel based on someone's recommendation or even a New York Times fiction list. I have seen so many people, mostly women of course, with this book in hand on the subways or in a park etc. My curiosity was peaked and now seeing this piece even more so. Not sure if I want to read the book or see the movie first but it's on my list!
