  • Nestled in a canyon above Los Angeles, the Hollywood Bowl, an amphitheater where such celebrated artists as the L.A. Philharmonic, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles have performed, has been the quintessential Southern California destination for music fans. I saw The Beatles in 1964 when I was 12 years old and again in 1965 (2 nights) at the Bowl. Many more concerts - rock 'n' roll and classical followed. A truly magical place!

John Holiday sounds amazing singing Summertime. I had the privilege of being present during Dudamels tribute to Gershwin. John Holiday sang every classic fabulously!

On a cool summer night in 1998, I got on my vintage Vespa scooter riding from Malibu down PCH, turning left on Sunset and meandering through to the Hollywood Bowl with $5 tickets in hand, relaxing on a bench in the upper tiers with wine and snacks and a cozy blanket. We were the first ever audience to experience Brian Wilson performing “Pet Sounds” in its entirety. Good vibrations and goose bumps….it was one of the most perfect nights of my life…🙏🏽

I saw Micheal Hutchence / INXS at the Hollywood Bowl back in the 80's. They were just on the rise and a popular band at that point.
We drove to the bowl, parked the car and walked towards the seating area. (( wow )) kind of a weird moment that took us ALL by surprise. There was hardly any one there. Great for us; we were able to have seats towards the front row section. The concert was on a week night; which factored into less tickets being sold. INXS was GOOD that night. And ... no lines at the bathrooms.

Grew up going to the bowl. My first concert I remember, I was 6.5. I had just started learning piano and my dad took me back stage and I got to meet Itzhak Perlman. My last concert there, before I moved to Texas, was also Tom Perry’s last. Its woven into the fabric of our LA lives. It’s the perfect venue .. that is- until someone kicks over their wine bottle and it goes rolling and clanking down each step for two sections ALWAYS during the most pianissimo and most intense musical moments 🤣. But seriously- I’m an LA native and it’s the one place I miss the most. We had season tickets since I was 7 and I’m 49. For those of us who love music AND LA, it’s part of our hearts and souls.

If you haven’t seen the Godfrey Reggio film, “KOYAANISQATSI”, you should, since the Philip Glass orchestra performed the entire score, throughout the whole movie, while down there.

Before there was any pop music, here there was the LA Philharmonic. An organization now ashamed of its roots and history. The prime mover of the Philharmonic and its financial backer more than 100 years ago was William A. Clark Jr. Son of the infamous copper baron and railroad mogul and billionaire. But Jr. was a different kind. Bookish, cultured, an amateur musician. His private manuscript Library still stands in the West Adams neighborhood as a part of UCLA. But his Gilded Age background doesn't suit the new money crowd of LA and Hollywood now. So he has almost been written out of the orchestra's story. But his money and influence launched the Philharmonic.

If you are really into classical music the Bowl is not the right venue. Before they sliced through the hillside for the freeway the acoustic was more or less there and natural. The result of the freeway destroyed this and made going to the bowl an arduous and unpleasant task. I stopped going to the bowl before they made the new Bowl, what with wine bottles rolling down the concrete steps and the artificial acoustic necessary and the job of finding a parking spot not in the bowl's lot, just three reasons I gave up on the outdoor theater. I'll take the Disney Hall and the Chandler Pavillion.
