  • A neat box, despite how hard I end up sounding on it.
Maybe I was just spoiled with the Mercenaries box.
These guys are very uniform in their dress, which makes sense given they're troopers as opposed to individual mercs. Most of them heads are helmeted, and my favorite is that they have enough completely enclosed helmets for the whole box.
Their weaponry isn't overtly hi tech. It looks spacey but not outlandishly so. I was a bit disappointed to see very little in the way of special weapons. There's a heavy machine gun, rocket launcher (different than the merc one) and a longer barreled rifle, along with a pistol and knife hand. They are definitely human but that can easily be switched up with a visit to the bits box.
I think if you're looking for an economic way to bulk out an army of faceless minion cannon fodder types, this is definitely a way to do it. Or some corporate security forces for games like Shadownrun or Reality's Edge.
If you've got access to the other Stargrave box I feel there's a lot of fun options available to you.
Much like the other Northstar boxes, the more work you put into it the more you can get out of it. I'm totally saving extra gun holding arms for a bunch of beastmen!

I agree bit Samey pose but great to mix with Wargames Atlantic and Frostgrave especially Cultists

I bought all three on the nickstarter. Gives a lot of choice. Troops are meant to be uniform. Love your first choice of weapons. I selected a young female head. You can if you look at the various heads across the sets create a group of deserters or a walking dead vibe.

Since these are military-type (government or corporate) troopers you would expect them to be "uniformly" armed and equipped with limited variation.

I've managed about ten times as many solo games using the Dead or Alive pdf as face to face games. COVID and all that. Getting to the point where I may try designing some new Marks to hunt.
2:24 It's a pony tail, there's a socket for it on the female head.
"Boring" or not, these guys finish the trifecta for Stargrave. Crew set for lightly-equipped guys with little or no armor and "primitive" (modern day-ish) weapons, Mercs for irregular troops, survivalist nutjobs and terrorists with medium-light armor and slightly higher-tech (and heavier) weapons, Troopers for regular military and paramilitary forces with mostly obvious scifi weapons. Since everything mixes and matches and you get loads of spares from each they can all be used for other roles as long as you have access to all three kits.
Troopers will probably be the best sellers overall but more for non-SG gaming uses. Mercs are probably the most versatile and varied for actual SG games. Crew are good for the scut SG soldiers (especially the loot grabbers) and I expect they'll sell a lot of individual sprues to scifi RPG players. The whole range is a great fit for Traveller, for ex.

I'd love to see you look at the GCPS marine/ranger sprues. They're one of my favourite sci-fi sprues I've ever worked on. In general I really rate Mantic's sci-fi stuff.

Using these guys for my Horus Heresy Militia. Their generic nature makes them great for the poor faceless grunts that upheld the glory for the Legions. Plus their price is quite agreeable compared to actual Heresy models.

Was planning on painting up some not-Cadians myself! Just for fun. Now that they took the old guard kit out of production too... :(
Could also make them some not-Halo marines. Will see. These look quite similar to how marines looked in CE!

Speaking of Shadowrun, have you picked up any of the old sculpts form Iron Wind Metals? The figures can be kind of spendy, but they are almost always on sale.

Just wanna say I am a new subscriber and I am really finding these reviews super handy. They are an excellent way to get a good look at these figures before making any decisions.
In this vid though you said these troopers come off as a little small. Would you say they look more scaled for 25mm or old/early 28mm gaming? A lot of stuff seems to be sizing up over time towards 30-32mm gaming, and I always appreciate some good looking 25-28mm figures. They'd fit in well with the ones I am making on my thingiverse!

Hello I hope you are well...I think these troopers are great, I will admit openly that I'm totally a Northstar fanboy and I have multiple boxes of all of their miniatures for frostgrave, oathmark and stargrave, these troopers are more like NPC's who the players will have to avoid or kill so their non-descript appearance isn't important, they give me a starship troopers flavour so they'd be great as guardsman units against tyranids (something I'm planning), but also they put me in mind of peacekeepers from the tv show Farscape which is more like the universe I feel stargrave fits ( for me anyways), as you said the mercs and crew are more random so slightly more variations but when you consider that almost all the other kits heads and arms will fit then it becomes truly endless which is why Northstar is so great, the only gripe perhaps is there isn't enough hand weapons in any of the three stargrave kits but with a sharp knife and a bit of glue you can add axes and swords from the frosrgrave kits...cheers now

At some point we need some space age close combat weapons. Why bring a sword or an axe when you can have laser blades or monofilament weapons?
We posited that an "assassin" type kit would be a great way to get these, while also filling a niche that ninjas/ spies/ stealthy types typically hold.
Who wouldn't want cyber ninja types?

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature yeah its all in the painting, yes the model might be a baebaeian axe but it could be painted as a glowing lazer/force power weapon and also the rules in stargrave are hand weapons are hand weapons tegardless of what they are or look like

I think the best combo is to buy this and the Mercs box. However! This kit as-is is a boon for other games that require human troopers and cops, such as Exploit Zero (formerly called Hardwired) -- or any cyberpunk game where cops and corporate guards are a must.

  • @friendlyneighbourhoodnerd

Only thing I'm not a big fan of is the fact that all the helmets have visors/glasses. The mercenaries, I think, kit, has one helmeted head without a visor, and I think it looks awesome. Otherwise looks to be a solid kit! Was thinking about picking one up to make some not-Imperial Guard from 40k, or maybe Halo Marines, just for fun really.
