For an impressive garden feature that raises plants up to create colourful displays why not build your own raised bed.
In this video I describe the value of raised beds and show you the plants I’ve grown in mine over recent years.
I also take you step-by-step through a rejuvenation project replacing some overgrown shrubs with vibrant young ones.

Hello Adam, thank you for this video. I have a white skimmia that has lost all of its leaves, I was told it wasn't ericaceous!! So now I know it needs to be repotted. Your acid loving plants are beautiful.
Many references say skimmia does not need an acid compost but mine appear to enjoy it. However as an evergreen shrub you must make sure the compost/soil does NOT dry out, as this can be one cause of leaf drop.

Thank you. There are some lovely flowering shrubs you can choose that flower in those early months of the year to start your gardening year off with style! Do check out Kalmia and its varieties.
Very useful Adam, beautiful raised bed, no wonder my lithodora is dying, as I’ve put it in a bed that isn’t acidic.
Yes an acid or ericaceous compost is perfect for lithodora.
I always thought that clematis prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil and not acidic soil? I am wonderingwhy you are planting it in the ericaceous compost? Thank yoiu. Happy gardening 🙂
I've found clematis grow well in these conditions. In fact clematis will tollerate a wide range of different soils and a soil or compost that is neutral to slightly acid is fine. I hope you found a few ideas in the video that you can use in your own garden.
@@Adams-Gardening-Guides oh i see. I was just going by the advice given by rhs when I initially asked them when I moved in my current house and was planting up my garden. My soil is neutral to slightly alkaline. I grow piearis and my mum's camelia in pots of ericaceous compost.
@@bewoodford2807 It can be confusing as many plants will grow in quite a range of soil types while others are very specific and fail to flourish unless conditions are just right. On the whole I try to avois teh very demanding ones, but then every gardener likes a challenge!
Hi Adam. Will Rhododendrons grow well in full sun? My garden is south facing
Hi. Rhododendrons will grow in full sun but will tolerate partial shade too. As camellias flower a little earlier in year their flowers can be susceptible to frost damage, especially if they are touched by morning sun while frost is still covering them. However most rhododendrons flower slightly later, and while I would suggest you find a position where they are sheltered from early morning sun it isn't essential.
