This is the introduction to the course How to Process Your Emotions: Essential Skills to Resolve Depression, Anxiety, and Other Intense Emotions.
When I talk about processing emotions, I mean we literally need to go through a process to regulate and resolve our emotions. In this video, you’re going to learn what emotion processing is, what gets in the way of it, and how you can work through your emotions so they don’t build up in a harmful way in your life.
Over the next 30 videos I’m going to teach you skills that help you process through not only feelings of anxiety and depression, but emotions in general. This is how to work through big, painful emotions. You could call this emotional intelligence or controlling or coping with your emotions, but it’s better than that. It’s actually resolving your emotions. Knowing how to process emotions is essential to living a happy life, to having healthy relationships, to being a good boss or friend or lover. Research shows over and over that these are the skills that help people live a good life, but most people have never even heard of them.
This course uses exercises, video, audio, quotes, visuals, narratives, short readings, workbook exercises, and links to extended resources. If you want to access all of these essential resources, ad-free, in one convenient location, you can buy the full course here: courses.therapyinanutshell.co...

I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

    Emotional regulation is a process:
    1) identify: what emotion it is. Notice them, check them in, name them. Feel into them.
    2) pause: calm body and mind instead of jumping to solutions to make the emotions go away.
    3) explore: what is the function and purpose of this emotion. What is this emotion trying to tell you. Check cognitive distortions, distorted ways of thinking that make it hard to see our emotions
    4) choose: what to do with these emotions. Take action, practice acceptance, etc
Emotional processing is a skill that can be learned
Emotions are deeper than thoughts or behaviors

I've been asking my different therapists over the years what "processing" your emotions means (they kept telling me I wasn't doing it and needed to) but none of them could give me an explanation that made sense. Your analogy actually makes sense to me, and I feel like such a weight lifted off of me just being able to understand this one thing that has eluded me for so long. Thank you!!!!!

I had to learn to trust, that was a biggie for me, to accept that not everyone was nasty or hurtful and that we could have differences of opinion without name calling and also to understand that emotions and feelings are actually healthy and not something to run away from. It is challenging but give yourself permission to sit with the feeling, cry if you need to and allow yourself to heal 🙏🏻

I've realized just how much I've had to suppress my emotions in the work place to seem 'professional'. The amount of times I would sit at my desk literally biting my lip to stop myself from crying.
My new motto for this year is "express instead of suppress". I'm trying to let myself just feel whatever comes up.
I also think as a kid, it was easy for adults to tell me that I was being 'bad' if I expressed anger, and I only saw unhealthy anger in the adults around me. As a 30 year old now, I get anxious anytime I feel angry and I have to remind myself that it is okay to feel angry.

I just found you. Omg. You have given me hope. I thought you processed emotions by feeling it for a “minute,” making a decision about it, then moving on. What I’ve learned is that worked for a lot of crap. It is not working for losing both my parents after having them 54 years. I also connected with a therapist TODAY who when asked her philosophy on mind body connection got excited…there is basically no other way. I had no idea I couldn’t talk my body into calming down even though I’ve tried grounding. Now that I know it’s from the bottom up, I get it! It’s been a banner day for me in this spiral down and today it took an upturn, in large part to your work here. Thank you very humbly. 🙏

Over the years i have read/researched and learnt many skills around the focus of helping people deal with emotions and self regulation and to help those heal from the "gifts" of the past. Your course and generosity by placing the course free on CZcams and also making the course affordable to all those that want to learn more is truly inspirational. Bless you and and a big heart felt/sent thank you

You'll never fully know how much your passion project is helping people. I appreciate the work you are doing so much. It has helped me tremendously. I'm often either offing the tools I learned from you to anyone struggling or pointing them to your videos if they need more. So even when they haven't seen you or know who you are your work is still helping them. Thank you so much.

Coming across your channel was a sign lol I love these they’re amazing and relaxing! I definitely didn’t grow up expressing emotions or having that emotional connection with my parents. But now as an adult and currently in therapy myself, it’s been tough learning how to be vulnerable and expressing my emotions in a healthier way and just not running away from it. Thank you for you this! 🙏🏽🦋

thank you very much, what you are doing is very noble, especially when mental health is such a taboo in many countries, it isn't possible for a lot of people to access psychiatric or even general therapy. It is really a blessing to be able to get help through internet without any conditions or charges. You are really doing a great job!

thanks for the vid! i just want to say that the old habits of eating/avoiding feelings aren't always bad. and they might be the most effective skills that our brain can think of at that time. and i kinda got the message that my skills are always bad... so for anyone out there who is thinking that they're at fault for not doing the right thing, you're not doing anything wrong, and you're not alone

Hello! I‘ve always had a very intense emotional world inside of me. I always was told that I am too much to deal with and have been hurt very often throughout my life. And especially the last few months I started to lose my rebellious attitude and started to bow for everyone. But now I‘ve realised that there are so many beautiful emotions inside of me and I want to accept them again. I‘m going to watch one video of this playlist a day and I‘m really happy that you put these videos out there!

Then I slipped into sleep paralysis which I wrestled out of through prayer.
