I thought there were way too many characters. Easily at least two of them could have been combined into one character. Some of the dialogue is cringe-inducing, especially the more modern day vernacular some of the younger characters use. However, it is cool to see Warwick Davis back in a lead role that doesn’t involve him dressing up as a leprechaun, and Joanne Whalley is as lovely as ever. It’s an okay show, I just wish it was great.
Dumpster fire of a sequel 🔥
Great review. A mixed bag is the perfect way to describe ths show. Very fair.
I'd rather take that over the rest of the negative reception this show has been getting I'm glad he at least said some positive things about it
This is the second time this year we've had a legacy sequel to a 80s film that had Val Kilmer in a supporting role, weird
What? Val Kilmer isn't in the show.
@@Dartanyoogles He was in the movie
If I had a nickel for every 2022 legacy sequel from an 80s movie featuring Val Kilmer, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
I grew up watching Willow. I was super excited to see how they would expand this storyline. And fifteen minutes into the first episode, I AM BORED. Too many new characters. Sorsha is a queen who arranges her child’s marriage while her son is some madmartigan rip-off idiot and her daughter’s rebellion stems from her clothes and outright whinging. Sorsha was a badass because gender roles didn’t apply to her. She was a good fighter, showed heart, and killed two dark sorcerers in front of her evil mother. But no, her daughter is the cool one because she’s a rebel who makes a scene. I want to see Willow and his family, Cherlindrea, the brownies, the monsters. If I wanted a conflicted Gen Z love story with fantasy thrown in, I’d watch Riverdale. Which I dont.
Great vid Sean!
Willow was a big part of my childhood. Maybe a lot of the effects from 1988 haven't aged great, but nostalgia plays a big part. I'd be willing to bet when you hear the name Val Kilmer, you think of Iceman. I think Mad Martigan, lol.
So I will definitely check this out soon, good or bad!
Finally had a chance to watch this. Boorman is great, Airk is great, Willow is great. Kit is so annoying. I feel like the show runners "tell" too much rather than show - every scene where she disapproves of the team's actions she has to say something. It would be enough to provide a disapproving look. This show reminds me way too much of the Shannara Chronicles, and not in a good way.
Just finished watching the series a couple of days ago. I have mixed feelings about it. I think the reason I struggled to really get into it is because I’ve only seen the movie WILLOW twice all time and don’t really remember it very well so that may be why I didn’t enjoy it very much.
I wasn’t a die hard fan of the original movie but I liked it well enough and enjoyed revisiting it from time to time growing up. I was curious about this follow up series and see how the characters/world progressed. Though the first 4 available episodes to this point it’s okay at best but completely agree with the modern feel of the dialogue and personality of the young characters. Kit is hands down easily the worst and by far most unlikable character to this point and it doesn’t sound like she gets any better from Sean’s take through 7 episodes. Warwick Davis does seem like he’s trying to take it seriously and respect the source material.
Kit was pretty "terrible teen" all the way through the show and then showed growth in the 11th hour. I like where the characters ultimately ended up, but it felt like they paced everything poorly for more dramatic affect, Willows character included.
I liked your analysis, especially about the modern mindset clashing with the setting but can I ask, what do you mean by "CW" version? You say it a lot and I have no idea what that is.
CW is a TV network that made Riverdale (which is the worst offender of over-the-top/obnoxious teen dramas). I definitely don't think it's remotely as bad as CW, but people mean clumsy teen drama when they bring it up.
Only watched the original movie days ago. Not sure what to think of the first two episodes I've seen.
I'm surprised you didn't use the clip from Rouge one "we were on the verge of greatness, we were this close"
It’s Rogue One
The way he was talking about the show I thought maybe he was going to use it.
Very fair review
My favorite things about Willow:
1. Warwick Davis, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel
2. The set, costume, and makeup design
3. The silly (but very dumb) fantasy story that had SOME good moments of fun and camaraderie
My least favorite things about Willow:
1. The pop rock soundtrack
2. Main characters being written overly dramatic and unlikable
3. The lack luster combat scenes
I haven't heard anyone else mention the costumes... Those babies set my expectations for the "style" of the show. I got the impression that this wasn't supposed to be like, a self serious medieval fantasy (like LOTR or GOT). It's a more modern adventure fantasy that was a little heavy handed with the teen drama at times (I thought most of the character arcs and plots were good but the set ups were a little painful and could have been smoother). I still had a decently fun time all things considered.
Hopefully this isn’t considered a spoiler. One of the characters is played my the actor who plays Flash Thompson in the MCU Spider-Man movies. It was nice to see him in something other than Spider-Man
Agreed, I had to look him up because he was so familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. Those were some fun movies
I agree kit is ANNOYING!
Why not give critics all 8 episodes if they're getting 7?
Do you need to watch the 1988 version before watching this?
Yes it would help alot
Just watch it lol. Only like 2 hours
@@ChrisGT122 maybe on a weekend I can but time is valuable to me during the weekdays unfortunately
@@kill3rs529 The first episode does recap the movie at the beginning. I watched episode 1 and 2 and haven't seen the movie and I understood it just fine. But you do you!
You don't HAVE too. It recaps the basics in the beginning, but it wouldn't hurt to just watch it.
I still love the movie but I learned my lesson with Disney Star Wars, No need to try it or damage Willow. Disney in 2022 has too many agendas and is just flat out lazy.
We need the kinda people that worked on Top Gun Maverick and Ghostbusters Afterlife to do these requels and revivals and legacy sequels and all else
2 weeks to the day my daughter, Willow, was born 😃
Haha, funny coincidence. Congrats!
I couldn't get passed episode 5...just BAD.
Yeah its a definite skip especially after seeing what the main "love" story is.
TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS TRAILER REACTION!
I loved the first few episodes. I watched the movie the night before because I didn't remember it at all
Disney reboots a classic story just to use legacy characters to get you to watch a gay romance film you wouldn't watch otherwise. Yeah ill pass.
We have devolved as a species.
The writer that wrote the first episode has writing credits for 5 episodes of Dawsons Creek lol
It's interesting that they gave critics 7/8 of the show...Do you take that as a bad thing?
Whats 7/8? Score? Amount of episodes?
@@NinthShinigami Yup. He said Disney gave critics 7 episodes of the season, the season only have 8 episodes. Normally they do the first two or three, just odd they sent out basically the entire show.
@@zackarydecicco3919 Disney either 1. Didn’t care or 2. They’re really trying to get as much word as they can out there, cause I doubt there’s a massive audience for this show, and if there is I doubt most of them even know this is coming
@@NinthShinigami I would think number 2 is more likely. Once they announced this show I told my dad and ask if he'd seen the original movie. His response was yah...like 30 years ago. It's not an 80s classic, it's one of the great 80s movies. So I think people just aren't really feeling this show.
Tried to start it off last night with the wife and didnt make it through the first 20 minutes. Another classic rraped on the altar of "changed to suit modern audiences" mantra that almost always precedes a huge financial flop.
Willow is one of my newest favorite Disney+ original series of 2022, such as Andor.
I think for me it would just be Andor… unless we can count Tales of The Jedi as well. Can’t speak on Willow yet… but ey good for you 👍
There was enough in the first two episodes to get me hooked. It’s innocent fantasy and Warwick Davies is great to see back
Sigh... I was hoping this show would be as good as Mandalorian. Didn't expect it to reach the level of Andor...
I’m guessing you weren’t a fan of Andor lol, this comment almost fooled me into thinking you didn’t expect it to be as good as Andor 😂😅
@@NinthShinigami Yeah I poorly worded that comment. I absolutely love Andor. What I meant to say was, Andor is amazing and I didn't think Disney could achieve perfection twice in a row, but I was hoping that Willow would at least be as good as Mandalorian (which is mostly good with a few episodes that are misses).
Am I losing my mind or did they straight up rip off a scene from Young Guns 2???? Like… almost verbatim.
First comment
If you love star wars episode 1 then you will love this series. Star wars fans hate episode 1, but people who don't know the movies might like it. If you like willow, this series is garbage. It's not the world of willow at all.
Loved this movie as a kid. Thought the first two episodes were fun. Of course it’s a bit campy and cheesy but that’s true of the movie so it works for me.
I *LOVED* the first two episodes. I had little interest in seeing this, but after giving it a chance after Rings of Power disappointed me, I found this to be refreshing and it kept me invested.
After watching LOTR trilogy, I decided to give Rings of Power a chance. Two episodes. In TWO episodes it lost me. Completely 💀 it didn’t need to aim for the level of the trilogy but at least aim for something solid or decent
@@NinthShinigami I did 2 episodes of Rings and it's one of the most boring shows I've ever watched. I've asked some people if it gets better and just about everyone that I know said not really.
@@BishopWalters12 it was pretty good to me ngl
@@BishopWalters12 maybe it did, but then again maybe it didn’t. Unfortunately, we’re never really going to be able to speak on how good or bad the overall show was. I know for sure I didn’t want to stick around after those two episodes. Yikes… if I had finished the show it would probably be sitting in my “worst of 2022 tv” alongside most of the MCU shows this year 😂 but I guess I’ll never know
@@infinitetrex1127 awesome glad you enjoyed it man 👍 wish I coulda had your experience
I wasn't a die hard willow fan growing up but I enjoyed the movie quite a bit and was looking forward to seeing how this turned out. It's a shame that my fears about the new characters seem to be right on the money. Just the way the look and are dressed gives off that gen z teen feel. I know some people don't have a problem w/ that kind of thing, but that sort of anachronistic disturbance in tone and setting really draws me out of a lot of modern media. Guess I'll keep waiting for someone to make a show for us old folks.
Disney ruins Willow, just like everything they touch.
It feels like a CW show
After 2 episodes I am already hating this. Bad acting and terrible choice of typical storyline. Looks like a CW show. No thanks!
Episodes 1 and 2 were good enough, they were good enough adventure episodes.
Starting off immediately with gay characters takes most people right out of that shit.
@@justinamenta7241 Maybe you shouldn't be a homophobic bigot. Who cares if they are Gay or not.
Unlikable characters, embarrassing attempts at humor, juvenile dialogue, wooden acting, inconsistent tone...this show was BAD 😄
Though my wife and I did enjoy it as a "so bad it's good" experience.
I never seen the series, but I enjoyed the movie.
I mean, it just came out today lol
There was no reason to add the woke LGBQXWZ junk. This could have been a true type of series in the vein of BRAVE were a woman doesn't need a relationship or just focus on the strength of women. Within 10 minutes I had to explain a lesbian kiss to my 2 little girls. I will just watch the original movie instead of the Woke Disney crap. Disney has lost billions just the last quarter alone. They just fired their last CEO to rehire Bob Igar to get away from the culture wars. Too late. They have just lost another subscription.
I'm not sure why explaining a lesbian kiss would be particularly taxing and I say this as someone who does think Disney goes too far sometime. But this content was very very PG. Try watching shows before you let your kids watch them in the future.
Yeah not good
