  • Today we take a two puppies, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Labrador Retriever on an awesome dog training adventure!
    We explore and talk about a whole host of topics ranging from agriculture to dog training theory, plus we get in tons of real life environmental socialization.
    For those of you not familiar with Rhodesian Ridgebacks, here's a little background information, here is a link to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States: www.rrcus.org/
    THE RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK is a dog of formidable power, dedication and courage. He claims an ancient heritage, yet is of relatively recent lineage in terms of standardization of the breed.
    Today's Ridgeback is descendent from a variety of breeds which were crossed by settlers of South Africa and Rhodesia with the native dogs of the Hottentot tribe. The ridge became his identifying mark.
    The Rhodesian Ridgeback survived in various forms through the years because of his superb hunting ability. In addition to trailing and tracking large animals, he was also used to hold his quarry at bay. He was the protector of game wardens, farm families and hunters throughout South Central Africa, where the breed developed into its present form.
    From its origin in Africa, the Ridgeback has lost none of its abilities as a hunter and guardian and he continues to be an excellent companion. The Ridgeback is a devoted family dog, totally loyal to his master. He is rather aloof and undemonstrative towards strangers.
    This is the Rhodesian Ridgeback, a dog of incorruptible, independent character, who takes his responsibilities of companionship, protection and family dedication to heart. He never forgets love and understanding, nor does he lightly forgive harsh treatment. He is a dog of noble bearing, whose physical attributes should reflect his role as guardian, companion and hunter.

I live in town, double lot so she can run, run, run on loose long training leash. Works like a charm. Already retrieved objects, sit, stay, handshake, even "prays" at bowl for food.(I trained 2 previous great dogs)..so precious, sweet, great.

    I used to take my Alaskan malamutes to San Francisco as part of their training process to practice public socialization. It was a big challenge for them and not every day was perfect but they made a lot of progress. Plus we got to meet a lot of interesting people! All that practice paid off later in life. When my dogs experienced certain situations that could’ve been dangerous. They escaped out of the yard a couple times while I was getting their backpacks ready. I guess they didn’t want to wait for me and went on the adventure! lol Because we practiced around where we lived they had good neighborhood manners. My neighbor told me she saw them trying to cross the street and they waited on the sidewalk and looked both ways until all the cars were gone and then they crossed the street. Everyone seem to be so amazed by how my malamute’s would act while on their adventure after they ditched me at the house. Another neighbor saw my dogs standing on one side of the street watching a man who had several Chihuahuas on leashes lose control of the dogs and everyone got tangled and started fighting. Apparently my dogs looked at each other and then walked away.

    Awesome video. This is how I’ve trained 4 Dobermans and now my Ridgeback pup is experiencing the woods 3-5 times a week. I’ve found that starting them young off leash in the woods makes the training very easy. First RIdgeback, though, he seems to like to think about whether he wants to come or not. Looking forward to many adventures with my new pal.

    Long lines are great for the early stages and new exposure. I've switched to an ecollar with my dogs. Positive reinforcement for every new interaction and until 6 months. Then slowly introduced the ecollar. Vibration and sound is all I need and since my training is built on positive reinforcement it is only needed on occasion. Stonnie's videos are a great guide for the positive reinforcement method.

    • @analarson2920
      @analarson2920 Před 4 lety +1

      True, warning I have seen ecollars malfunction and it's not pretty. Go for longer slower reliable behavior, it's old fashioned but really gets into their brains, works great with all dogs not just working dogs. Check kikopup on malinpis vids. Prayers to your journey

    Stonnie - all your videos are educational and entertaining. I have a question about puppy socialization. We will be bringing home an 8 week old black lab around Christmas time. We live in Southern New Jersey. I want to ensure the puppy is socialized to water, swimming, kayaking, canoeing and boating. I am concerned that the weather is going to be too harsh to do these activities with such a young dog. Should I be concerned? Should I wait on these activities until warmer weather comes around or should I go ahead with these activities so she is exposed to them in the 8-16 week old time frame and just be cautious with how long the puppy is exposed to the cold?

    ... they'll only do it once or twice for a hard headed one LOL nope if you own a wire haired pointer with a penchant for toads they will do it all day every day and even lick the roadkill toads they pass. Toad mating season was stressful with that dog. He would leave anything else on command but not a toad. I regulalrly have common toad babies coming into the hosue in Autumn to find a hibernation spot and had to catch them up before he started licking them.

    USA is the most successful country in feeding their people? Hahahaha, idk which source this is from, but being totally honest overfeeding and feeding people with shit like corn starch/sugar is in my opinion not a good argument for successfully feeding the citizens. The USA is not even 250 Years old plus it’s ranked on place 18. for the country with the most obese citizens with an amount of 33,7 %.
    I mean you can’t even trink tap water in the USA because it does taste like pool water.
    No hate to all you US-Citizens but sometimes you should consider a different perspective than „America is the best in everything“ and look around what other countries are doing good maybe even better?
