    How sensitive are ridgebacks?
Well, when I had to move to a new town for high school (I'm from Namibia) our Ridgeback literally refused to eat for a few days... I traveled back and forth on certain weekends and during holidays.
Our Ridgeback cross breed once got into my suitcase because she thought I was packing to leave... I was unpacking.
    Absolute angels

Ridgebacks are amazing! My handsome boy Oden passed away at 13 years old. We got him for my oldest daughters first birthday. They grew up together. He was a nightmare to train though. His first year he destroyed EVERYTHING! We finally sent him to a boarding facility and would go twice weekly for 3 months to train with him. He came home the best dog ever!! You have to get their energy out. Walks and play and lots of attention. Oden was huge too! Much larger than a typical ridgeback. His back standing came up to my waist, he was 130 pounds of solid muscle. He was also a ridgeless ridgeback. He didn’t have the ridge down the back that stood up all the time. It only came up when he was upset. His growls were so deep and you could just feel the vibrations. He really was our 5th child, we had/have 2 other dogs we love so much but he was different. We just adored him. He spent all his time with us as a family. He wanted to be where we were and we wanted him with us all the time. He was just a snuggle bug! He LOVED my kids and would have given his life to protect them. He thought he was a lap dog. When my youngest son was a baby he slept in front of his crib. We finally moved his dog bed there because I wanted him to be comfortable. He would just melt when the kids snuggled him and laid their heads on his belly like he was a giant pillow. Oden was like no other dog I’ve ever had. He was just so special. It’s been almost 3 years since he passed and we still miss him so much. We had him privately cremated and returned to us. I keep him in a beautiful wooden box with his picture and favorite toy on top. When we are ready we want another ridgeback. I know no one will ever replace him, but his breed is just perfect for our family.

I'll be in the market for a dog in the next few months, and a RR is high on my list of breeds I'm looking to get. It's really between a RR and a Belgian Malinois, but as supremely trainable as a Mal is, they are said to be too hyper and wanting to be on the go all the time (no thanks!). On the other hand, while I know the RR needs good daily exercise (no problem, as I love the outdoors), I'm getting the feeling that after their daily romp outdoors, that a RR will be very happy to chill out and relax at home, as well.
What strikes me about the RR in comparison to most other breeds is they have a strong and regal presence about them, without being obnoxiously loud and always barking. And a former neighbor had a RR, and what was VERY noticeable is when it was around other breeds, is it immediately became evident that the RR was the Alpha vs. the other dogs, and the other dogs seem to recognize the Alpha presence of the RR. Did you find that to be the case with your RR? Thanks.

I've learned over the years that dogs must have daily walks and exercise. If not, they will dig and destroy, because they are bored and have energy to release. Not sure I would get a Ridgeback at this time. My current dog gets tired on a 20 minute walk per day (230lbs dog) and it's easy to manage time wise.

I know there is a ridgeback mix at the tampa humane society right now. I have been constantly checking the website for the past couple of months. Back in December (2019) he was there and you could tell that he was not trained properly and had no way to expel all of its energy. Well he got adopted like in the beginning of Feb. or something like that but I'm so sad because now he's back in the shelter.

  • @samlyons6408
    @samlyons6408 Před 3 lety +2

I’ve had my RR for about 9 months, he’s a year now and what an amazing breed. These dogs play hard and sleep hard. He’s extremely loyal, does not like outsiders but excepts them quickly once he sees I’m ok with it. He does well with our indoor one eyed rescue cat. Little ruff at first but quickly realized she’s one of the pack and adapted well to commands to leaving her alone. I previously had a wolf hybrid for 13 years and there’s lots of similarities in pack mentality. RR is 100x easier to train and doesn’t demand hours of exercise but he has no problem keeping up when we hike miles. He roams less and stays by my side more in open terrain. He has very high intellect, intelligence and a want to please, hints the easy training. He’s very social and with the family and craves love/acceptance. He easily gets jealous of others getting attention but displays it in a patient/positive way. Only bad thing I can say is that it has been hard to train him not to lick but he’s a dog and I figure that will take years along with him growing out of a puppy. I know that’s how he displays affection and it will take years for him to get that with touch.
As for the lion hunting argument... No single dog can kill a lion in the same way no single lion can kill an elephant. A dogs teeth aren’t big enough to penetrate a lions vitals and their mouths aren’t big enough to stop airflow to the head if it could fight off the 400+ pound animal with 10 cm teeth. In a pride, female lions do the hunting and are the first line of defense at protecting territory. If they need back up that’s when the male lion steps in. He also fights if he is challenged for his alpha spot. In the 19th century, the hunter Cornelius van Rooyen from Rhodesia bred Greyhound-like ridged females into his original pack of dogs. And the offspring had a particularly helpful talent: They would find and confront lions, but not kill them. This behavior gave the hunter time to prepare and fire his rifle.
When they weren't hunting, these dogs protected riders from dangerous leopards and baboons. And they would track other game, such as antelope, for their people to eat.

I am blessed to have a RR, Thula, and she really is the perfect dog. Mine has white "socks" on her front legs, which just makes her even cuter (and getting adoration in public). One important thing not explicitly mentioned: mine is an African Clown Hound. RR's have the most expressive faces I've ever seen in dogs. The short fur helps, I suppose, but combine a clearly visible face with their intelligence and daftness, and you've got a dog that will find a way to make you smile on any day, no matter what. Also, their empathy levels are through the roof. Thula knows exactly how I am feeling, and when I'm worked up about something, she'll come over and nibble, lick, invite play, whatever, until I relax. When I'm down, she comes over for a cuddle. She is relentless, too. She simply doesn't stop until I feel better. What a ray of sunshine!
Also thank you so much for pointing out that while they are the perfect dogs, they are absolutely not for everyone. I also to tell that to everyone adoring her, you really should know what you are doing when raising a RR, from day one. So prior experience with raising a dog and obedience training is a big plus, as RR's require 100% consistency in their training - and indeed only through positive reinforcement. There can't be angry yelling at your RR, let alone getting physical. The only punishment you can use is to withhold attention. Believe me, your patience WILL be tested. A Ridgeback is a real commitment, and you (and all family members!) have to be serious about it and properly inform yourself about what you're getting into. If you do take the challenge on and put in your effort, the reward is one of the best things in life imaginable.

We have had two Ridgebacks, a male and a female at separate times. Just lost our baby girl to osteosarcoma at 5 years old this past November. My soul still aches over losing her! I will guarantee you if you're blessed to have a Ridgeback in your life you will most definitely always have this breed and never consider any other breed. They want to be an integral part of their family, please you, have great personalities, are gentle, loyal, intelligent, like to play, great with kids of all ages, will alert to strangers on property, like to cuddle and try to be the first occupant on/in your bed at night if you allow them. Hands down just a great family member! I can't say enough good things about them.

Best dog I ever had, saved him from a remote aboriginal community, he was my best friend for over 10 years. Followed me to work, ( he escaped every day) to sit at the back door of the kitchens I worked in. Loyal, fun loving, patient (had a king charles puppy hang of his tail), and awesome guard dog ( if you smelled like beer, you’re not welcome). I miss him every day since he passed.

Always fantastic with other pets. He's extremely loyal. His heart is golden and there's not a spiteful part in him. I love him like a brother.

We had 8 Ridgebacks, the last one was my favourite, she would follow me to the shop, look around the aisles...
    On Socializing,
She hated cats, however my dad was an excellent trainer, when he brought Red Dusty home after her retirement from being a guard dog at his business, he commanded her just once to accept our Siamese cats which she very calmly did on the second day of meet and greet the other house pets. Those cats had a lot of cheek too, whenever my dad was outside, they would deliberately walk under my Ridgeback very casually, stop, as if they heard a sound somewhere... you know, just having cheeky cattidtudes. Yeah my Ridgeback knew they were "testing" her, she would look at them slyly like "wait till I get you mini lions" when they walked from underneath, passing at the front part of her chest. It didn't take the Ridgeback long to accept the cats though she was 12years old at that time, never was associated with any cats or other dogs.
    On Protection,
We moved into a new home when she also arrived, on the first night a burglar chanced his "Rights" to crap in the granny cottage. We weren't accustomed to burglars from our previous abode, this Ridgeback caught his stink in the air, ran around (we too caught a whiff but didn't know the direction) lunged at him from the back, her height and weight brought him to the ground easily as he tried to escape, we were shaking in shock and taken aback cos she looked like a tall man on top of him in the dark. He screamed in fright, so did we. 😁😁😁 We never saw nor knew her capabilities, strength, power and protection before that.
A few years later we had another incident, a thief decided to divert his walk from the road into our property, again, our Angel ran after him down a steep road, gripped him from the back, dropping him to his knees, he looked like he was begging her 😂😂😂, while still pinned him down, she gripped his ear though she had no teeth at 15, well that thief really screamed for his mother😂😂😂 this time we died laughing
🤣🤣🤣😅. That was the unforgettable strength, power and protection of a Ridgeback as old as she was.
Moral of the story, Ridgebacks are exemplary guard dogs providing you treat them well, no harsh training tactics, chaining or aggressive treatment. They absolutely LOVE mingling with the family, being apart of everything, willing to sacrifice their lives for your's. This breed is very aloof, no need to teach them how to guard, except the basics. My dogs never had actual training. They were naturally super observant, suspicious of everyone and would move all around the property the whole day, never sitting still or napping in a spot for too long. They are a vigilant breed, NOT very good with children. Treat them well and you'll be rewarded Well.
Lastly, just so you know, she was 17 when she developed bloat or gastric distortion one morning....and put to sleep.

I have Jake, a 130 pound Ridgeback. He is my second Rhody. I will never have another breed. They are beautiful, elegant, calm, super affectionate and smart. Jake looks just like the male in this video except he has a white crest on his chest. He is with me 24/7. They are not for the faint of heart--not particularly interested in doing what you demand. Very challenging in the first 3 years--difficult to train. Better to do things with them as partners rather than as a master. They can demand your attention and respect. Best dogs I have ever had by far.

These dogs are Soooooooooooooo affectionate. I met an owner where I live 3 months ago, he has a full grown male named, "Rhodie," of course. Rhodie is 110 lbs, lean athletic, and full of so much love for his master. The guy got out of his car and the male was up on his hind legs draped all over his owner and was licking him incessantly from ear to ear, non-stop for a full 5 minutes. I had no idea this breed was so attached and attentive to their owners, but now, it all makes sense. High IQ dogs.
