What really happened during the Ukrainian 2023 counteroffensive? 30 senior Ukranian and US military officials in addition to 24 officiers and regular grunts explained their expierence during combat and the planning phase.
The first thing you need to know is that Ukrainian soldiers who are veterans of the battle were shocked by the density of Russian minefields. To give you an idea of the scale here. One Ukranian soldier recovered a Russian map used to mark their minefields. For just that small area near Robotyeen 20,000 land mines were listed. They were placed four miles long and four miles deep. Ukraine T64 tanks with anti mine rollers were used to clear a path. but the rollers were destroyed after only one mine when they are supposed to withstand 4 hits. This is because Russian forces triple stacked the mines. This supports the Post’s claim that 60 percent of Ukraine’s de-mining equipment was destroyed in the first days of the offensive. According to Melnik the air support that was supposed to come never made it.

When Ukraines troops trained on the M2 Bradley in Germany they drove in optimal conditions on smooth terrain. A far cry from the muddy earth they encountered on the front. Add to that the stress of driving under fire and it’s a bad mix. Some of the transport drivers accidentally steered out of the safe lane that had been cleared and hit stacks of Russian mines. This map shows a clear picture of why it was so difficult to advance south in Ukraine. There are only several main highways in the region that go south one of which passes straight through the town of Robotyne on its way to Tokmak. These two roads heading south are narrow choke points through which you have to pass. Russian forces have encountered the same problem with their past failed attempts to advance in Vuheldar and elsewhere.

Yes first thing i tought as well , peoples aside even most of the media outlets were making fun of Russian fortifictions. In a way they looked ww2 style ,outdated and shouldn't work at modern era but it did worked big time. I think there was also bit of a ecstasy of victory , Ukraine won massive victories at Kharkiv and Kherson so after that peoples tought those fortifictions were piece of cake.
Gotta give big credits to Sergei Surovikin , retreat is one of the hardest maneuver to pull off sucesfully and Kherson wasn't easy place to retreat from. Supplying Kherson wasn't easy but leaving it also wasn't easy both physically and mentally. They could have struggled there and lost so many , i think it would hugely favor Ukraine. Anyway sucesfull retreat there and building mass fortifictions at zaporizhia looked pathetic back then but it actually became turning point of the war. Now Ukraine preparing defenses who knows where this war will go...

The greatest lesson here is that one should never underestimate one’s enemy. I remember last year when everybody was making fun of Russia, saying they had already lost the war. The expectations of this counteroffensive were through the roof because they were based on the assumption that the Russian army was weak and inferior. The West also has this same mindset with regard to China, and so we have to be cautious here too.

Ukraine is short on equipment, facing an existential threat, heavily reliant on assistance from fickle allies, and fighting a war significantly different from those of the past, both due to proliferation of drones and the fact that the opposing militaries are only _partly_ modern. While the Ukrainians' plans _might_ have been delusional, believing yourself qualified to make that call almost certainly is.
And even if you _are_ one of the vanishingly few people in possession of the necessary information and expertise, then commenting on this video is stupid. I think everyone who knew anything about the conflict realized that the counter offensive was going to be hard to pull off. Without airpower, you can't really assault positions like that. Desert Storm still provides so many lessons to this date. The reason why the ground forces has such an easy time of it in Desert storm was the intensive bombing campaigns that destroyed 70% of Iraq's artillery before the first US troop had an engagement. The Iraqis also built a massive series of defensive lines, with mines and layers of trenches (however I don't think anyone has ever built a minefield like the one in Ukraine, this is Crazy Ivan level of mines) but they were bombed all up and down the trenchline and in front and in back. After the first set of works was breached, the tank drivers said they just used the plows on the tanks to bury the soldiers hiding in the trenches and rolled on. In Ukraine, you cant get within sight of the defensive works before artillery has spotted you and started firing. The Anti tank weapons of today are ahead of the armor in the forever arms & armor race and neither side really has a competent airforce capable of effectively performing hunter killer missions against enemy support units, like artillery and air defense, or performing substantial bombing attrite the defensive lines. The only long range fires either side has is artillery or cruise missiles. Sure they CAN drop bombs and do, but I'm talking about a high tonnage over a relatively short time. You'd want to have 70% attrition on that first defensive line before you even start the offensive.

Also Ka-52 helicopters were serious threat to ground forces as their rockets can be fired from small atittude from 12-15 km distance. AFU have destroyed big quantity of these helicopters only when received ATACMS in October (a way too late)

It seems very hard to stop the sheer number of drones and they provide a cheap form of guided weapons and reconnaissance compared to what used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions to produce something with the same capabilities 10-15 years ago. Still, it doesn't replace the tonnage that is dropped by a capable airforce. Of course artillery is crucial and with drone spotters its become deadly accurate, but the way you counter artillery is by destroying them from the air. The little FPV drones with Rpgs just dont have the range to strike the backline support units, nor are they able to lift and drop tons of ordinance to decimate enemy force concentrations.

The WaPo article was also scrutinized by Ukrainian war correspondents. There was also a third direction of the offensive towards Vasylivka, to cover the western flank of the operation. In hindsight, Gen Milley’s idea to concentrate all of the available forces in the main direction of Robotyne would have been a huge gamble that would have also failed but with bigger losses because of the exposed flanks. Regardless, the elephant in the room is that the amount of military aid to Ukraine is absolutely inadequate for conducting offensive operations, despite the huge stockpiles of weapons the US has accumulated during the Cold War. The US has over 6000 tanks, over 11000 IFVs, 1400 MLRS, and so on. The fraction it has made available to fight Russia is so minuscule makes you question its intentions in supporting Ukraine.
WaPo article also has an element of a political request to shift the blame to the Ukrainian army. But how do you expect a combined arms offensive to work without air support and without combined arms? Ukraine simply did not have enough armor in the direction of Robotyne: 100 Bradley’s, 18 Leopard 2s, and Soviet tanks. This is nothing. And, drones were apparently an even bigger problem than mines.

When we compare the amount of armor that Germany used in 1941 in Ukraine to the amount of armor Ukrainian forces were given to break through Russian defenses we can only conclude that Ukrainian forces will need nearly a thousand tanks to break through. The Ukrainian army has to be able to absorb the loss of dozens of tanks in an attack and not even blink. Unfortunately the West has been fighting small conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan where small units were predominantly used. Well guess what, this is a war on the scale of WWII in the Eastern Front.

I remember that long before these offensives there were talk about using the mine-clearing line charges (which clears up to 100meters) which I believe worked well at the start of the war to clear minefields and led to some ukrainen breakthroughs, but Russia then responded by making the minefields 300 meter deep which requires multiple charges and causes the clearing vehciles to be much more vulnerable to artillary and drone fire.
Ukraine then requested a large amount of normal mine clearing vehicles using chains and similar techniques to help in offensive opperations, Russia then started stacking mines on top of each other solely to take out the mine clearing equipment.
I honestly can't see a way to ever properly conduct ground offensive operation against a country which military doctrine is so heavily weighted towards both mines and artillary (and currently also loitering/drone ammunition).
I understand why Ukraine is building defensive positions to prevent Russian attacks, but at that point it seems you've already recognized that the current areas are in all essentials completely lost, since at the same time Ukraine is building defensive positions I assume that Russia is also fortifying/expanding their own which means breakthroughs will be significently harder if not impossible the next time.

It remains to hope that just like the allies in 1918 Ukrainian tactics catch up with the defense.
The Hindenburg Line was broken, among other things, by the fact that the Entente only "bit out" a kilometer or so at a time, fortified it and then waited for the Germans to counterattack, which led to higher losses for the Germans and, in combination with material superiority and a better supply situation, ultimately led to Germany's defeat. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, knows Ukraine 🇺🇦 has limited trained troops their most valuable resources so the military leaders use the Stalanistic of the 1940 against The Orcs letting them feed their massive numbers into the Ukrainian blood bath that's destroys the Orc Canon fooder .
This works for armoured columns to with Ukrainians far superior drone tactics destroying men tanks , apc ammo dumps etc, etc a blinding success & here is only one small skirmish report to show its working .
/12/2023. Russians try assaults at the Khearson/ Dnipro bridgehead & took many losses of armored vehicles from the marines in that sector . their drone operators where extremely effective in knocking out vehicles & distant laying mines at intersections by the Ukrainians using the infamous, Baba Yaga drones, which can carry & drop 3 heavy mines & by placing mines just before the corner, they destroyed any vehicle coming around the corner .
This tactic destroyed the attack knocking out tanks & BTRS & stopped the Russian assault .
Ukraines counter battery fire was particularly effective at destroying the Russian batterys catching while they set up , destroying some units & caused outhers to waste time as they displace at the most advantages for the Ukrainian Marines counter attack .

Result. The Ukrainian offensive completely failed, it was an ordinary PR campaign paid for with the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. * New* NATO equipment or equipment from the USSR is nothing when the fields are mined and dozens of drones and Lancets are flying over you. The Russian army is slowly but inevitably moving forward, and the Ukrainian command, after 2 years of war, remembered that it was necessary to build defensive structures in winter (when the ground freezes). Oh yes, there is also a Ukrainian landing party on rubber boats, which is pressed to the bank of the Dnieper River and is being destroyed by the Russian artillery. The author of the video calls it *a small victory for the Ukrainian army*. OK:) Now think about why the Russians are not trying to eliminate this suicidal breakthrough of the Ukrainian infantry completely? But they give new and new Ukrainian soldiers the opportunity to arrive on this small piece of land. There is no doubt that the most combat-ready brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already been lost, their defenses will be broken by the superior forces of the Russian Army next year, then peace negotiations on the terms of the Kremlin.

Even if they get their $60 billion, it's over.

honestly I can understand his apprehension over the risky plan. The russians have a very long history of seeing battles coming and closing in on bulges from armored offensives like this one. While they're not like how they were in the second world war they still have that heritage and we all know they love tradition.

Actually he spared a lot cause the sheepopulation can't handle the reality. The 47th brigade lost about 70% of its personnel in the first two weeks of the summer fiasco. When they reached the actual first line of the Russians beyond Robotyne it already went through 2 cycles of replenishing the manpower with mobilized men (yeah - the ones dragged like stray dogs from the streets). Now what is left from this brigade is ditched in Avdeevka to plug the holes. And the situation is more or less same for all the other brigades that Ukraine kamikazed in the Russian defenses.

Counter offensive failed, bro. They didnt even take their minimum objective, which was the city of Tokmak. And honestly tho, mines did play a role. But Russian KA-52s, recon and ATGM teams ate the bulk of Ukrainian offensive. What is it with westerners always trying so hard to minimize Russian resolve. "oh.... it was just the mines". Bro, even the mine laying is commendable. But you go for mines, because its the furthest from any direct prowess. Kinda pathetic. This is "Russian winter" and "burning of Moscow" all over again. The first month of offensive looked mostly Ukranian Armored Forces vs handful Russian Artillery Spotters. Which went as good as we saw. Because it is hard to detect 2-3 men team that do not fire at you and just inform big guns behind their back 40-60 km away. When Ukranians decided to send infantry without armor those spotters were easily pushed out and Ukranians started to gain land but increased casaulties for Ukranians armed forced greatly.
