It was probably a local coven, the full moon sacrifice is basically a way to end something (the sacrifice being symbolic) and the red paint representing a relationship. They've done a lot of research here, and the giving of a voodoo doll to the person the doll is intended to be is actually symbolic of your hopes for them to take fate into their own hands.
They did well considering the rest of the content
These animated story channels are known for stealing stories from Reddit and such, so they might have stole the story from someone who saw a coven and thought it was a cult because they didn't fully understand what they were doing

The cult thing just sounds like a normal coven of witches (modern-day witches, that is.). A sacrifice generally doesn't mean anything like a person or an animal. Most of the time its just something valuable to that person/the people sacrificing it.
Like during festivals like Lammas and Mabon, it is tradition for the witches/Wiccans/pagans celebrating to sacrifice some of the food eaten to whatever deity they choose (mainly a harvest goddess like Demeter).
