In May 2016, a banner at Bordeaux’s Matmut Atlantique stadium declared in French: “For those who dream of England, there’s still room on Newcastle’s bench!”
It was aimed at Henri Saivet, who had left for Tyneside four months previously. Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League was imminent, and a pocket of supporters were wallowing in their former captain’s misery.
More than three years on, even a place on the bench seems to be beyond Saivet . Their supporters would be forgiven for forgotting that the 28-year-old is still employed by the club.

He's like that player on football manager who helped get you promoted but isn't good enough for the top league. You keep him around anyway because you like him.
CaptainScarBeard except he didn’t play in the championship?
He didn't say that he did you pedantic twat
@@adrrodw4975 but that's what he implied and this video is nothing like what he said?
Not good enough to excel at the championship. Squad player at best.
In my Walsall save I had a youth team player who scored a winning goal against someone in League 2 when I had no strikers and I kept him around until he was 36! Played about ten minutes of football in 20 years. Good bloke.
£32,000 a week for four years to do nothing but have lunches in the team canteen and stretch a couple of times a week. I'd say he's winning.
@NizzyNizerson i assure you he doesn't care. He could be retired at 34. You could only pray for that.
@NizzyNizerson Adebayor recently admitted he was interested in the money, always, and that it was like having a day job to him. Or even Osvaldo who quit soccer to be a musician for that's what he loved
You mucks are only looking at this from a typical shallow money hungry perspective which very few footballers would (it is increasing imo however).
You don't get to play in a 1st division team if you were JUST after the money. That desire would simply not be enough to warrant a position on top league team. The enormous amount of hardwork and consistency would have to be genuine that goes into becoming a better footballer, a money hungry monk would be spotted out sooner rather than later by any club.

Saivet - my Football Manager 2011 hero - banging in 30 goals from the wing👌🏼
Everton have the same issues with Oumar Niasse and Cenk Tosun - players on big money with excellent attitudes, popular with teammates and fans but never given a chance, even with Dominic Calvert-Lewin a perpetual "almost man"
Mate i watched niasse at cardiff hes terrible
Oh, I wouldn't disagree. But personality and application wise, he is very well loved at Everton. But we'd sell him off for round of sandwiches, no doubt.
Depends who buys him. Could be tricky as we'll most likely ship him to China and, while Chinese cuisine is infinitely variable and almost inevitably fabulous, they are not known a a sandwich eating peoples. They may have to bring in an outside dietitian. If the sandwiches are for Bill Kenwright, I'd suggest Tripe, if they are for Mr Brandt, I'd suggest a back bacon and egg banjo, given that back bacon comes form the centre of a pigs back and it will be the closest he has been to a seeing a tasty centre back for a while and if it is Marco Silva, a P45 sandwiched between two slices of Theo Walcott, specifically the two slices that went wildly wide of goal against Aston Villa.
I might just add, by the way, this might just be an Everton thing. David Unsworth played 304 games for us, mainly kicking people up in the air and giving away penalties. Yet we loved him. Like few other players in the last 30 years. Why?
I wonder how many African players are going through the same situation in the European top leagues. Brilliant video [RIP Cheick Ismaël Tioté

Foooookin hell guys excellent job yet again with this video. As a Newcastle fan, I felt bad enough that we squandered Thauvin, but this is perhaps more confusing.
You should do one on Sandro Ramirez. He's on £120k a week at Everton and he's not scored a goal for nearly 2 years for any of his clubs
Thanks for the video! Always been amongst those who wondered why he hasn’t been given a chance
Reminds me of Dion Dublin who lived on the bench at old tratford but excelled once left at Coventry and Aston Villa
Football manager hero. Him and Sakho were the 2 go to players at PSG every time
As a lifelong Newcastle supporter I think this is pretty accurate. The main issue though was the fact that graham carr brought him in under the old transfer policy. Buy cheap players with potential and sell them on for profit. It pretty much never worked. Marveaux. Gouffran. Ben arfa. Remy*, etc. But saivet was supposed to be a striker or a cam. Not a defensive mid and especially not a defensive mid in a side battling relegation that needs an industrious player like isaac Hayden who just runs and covers ground. He doesn’t have the motor for that or the stamina. He is an attacker who somehow became a defensive midfielder who we couldn’t play because we expected much more output from a dm to survive in the pl under benitez and mclaren. Basically graham carr sold a dream to mike Ashley of buying low and selling high. Never worked. We really just needed to spend money on a proven PL player to help us. Not invest in players who’s best days were supposedly ahead of them. Especially not a striker turned dm that carr was obsessed with and had a fear of missing out on .
Can’t help but feel bad for the guy though. He was bad for us and we were bad for him

This a good contenrt thank you for giving this, how abouut discussing marco v ginkel and lucas piazon next?
Saivet could flourish in the Premier League in the right team or position. An initial lack of physicality is not necessarily a problem, look at De Bruyne. When he plays for Senegal, it is often alongside midfielders like Gueye and N'Diaye who compensate with their own strength, so he isn't as exposed as the most advanced of the three as he is when he plays a holding role.
Rafa couldn't comprehend why Doumbia had been brought, but next season he scored 20 goals in Swiss Super League.
A day without a clip from Tifo would be a day in hell for me Big ups to the guys behind Tifo ♥️

Don't tell me what to do!
I don’t understand he’s an experienced international with Senegal. The same Senegal has world class players like mané and koulibaly.
Ashraf Trashaar has nearly 100 caps for Morocco, a team with the likes of Ziyech and Hakimi.
I really would love to see him here in Germany after the winter. Maybe in the first league at a weaker club like Freiburg or Union Berlin. Or he could take a big risk and go to our second league an take a chance to play a key role at a club like Bochum or maybe even higher, like Hamburg.
If any club is willing to pay his 32,000 PW wages I'm sure Newcastle will be happy to let him go... That's the problem though...
I'm amazed clubs give such long contracts to players without any break clauses
this happens because ashley's minion at NUFC who makes the transfer decisions literally knows nothing about football.
A real waste, but sadly french league players seem not understanding how difficult moving to Premier league is.
If they just had a good season, or a first season in which they confirm the expectations we had on them, they immediately quit their clubs for any Premier league side.
Saivet, Cabella, Khazri, Boufal and so many others...
Maybe they lack of patience, or maybe money is too attractive.
Concerning Saivet, as a Bordeaux fan, he was really a good striker, good with the ball, good technique and even a very good timing with aerial duels, despite his size. And at the end of his Bordeaux era, the coach tried to put him in midfield (attacking or central midfield, but never defensive, to me he has not the quality to play that role) where he showed some real qualities too. A waste.
And for this season, I'm worried for Saint-Maximin, he has typically the profile of the young talented but not confirmed player moving too early to Premier League
French clubs are also quick to sell. They need that money so ..
You missed one name and that is Thauvin... two-footed, talented winger with beautiful dribble skills, destroyed in England by, yes, NUFC.
@@azutsukimiya yes and many others, not just at Newcaslte.
But concerning Thauvin I'm not so sure that he's such a great player. He is doing really great things with Marseille since he's back, but he never made it into French national team, has not the greatest mentality (how he behaved with Lille...) and recently has a lot of injuries.
In my point of view he doesn't have what it takes to play in a bigger club. During the last transfer window he was linked with Bayern Munich for example, would have been a big fail in my opinion. Not certain, but maybe he has not the level for Premier League neither
Quel Quechose he was selected for the World Cup though
@@Maqalx yes, because with the season he just had, his statistics, it was a justified choice. But he had such a season with Marseille, my point is that I'm not sure he could do it with a bigger club.
And with french national team he has play a very few, and never done any decent display

This video is more interesting than Newcastle today, excellent work
Please do a video on Sunderland and Jack Rodwell? Very similar situation.
Could even do a linked video to the Netflix series? Or mention it within the video.
transfermarkt tell that after this video:
19/20: he didn’t play any competitive game for any Newcastle team, nor made it to the bench
20/21: same + played 4 games (starting them all) for the U21s.
21/22: His Newcastle contract expired in the summer. He remained a free agent all the season.
22/23 and 23/24: he is a starter for Pau fc, French Ligue 2 mid-table underdogs. He scored 16 goals in 71 appearances for them, playing a swiss knife role in their midfield. He was their 23/24 captain.
He hasn’t played for Senegal again so far.
You put more effort into this video than Saivet ever has in a Newcastle shirt.
Thank you for finally explaining this situation. Embarrasing but even as a Newcastle fan I didn't know he had made those comments about Gouffran and Obertan (I'd bench him for that myself) nor the reason for his position changes. I do remember that free kick though and personally I've always always questioned why he doesn't get a chance in a more advanced or 'freer' role. Obviously I'm not going to question Rafa's judgement here, nor even Steve McClaren's, but eight games in how many years? If Shelvey's fancy hail mary playstyle gets gametime week in week out then give him a chance I still say. Not like Bruce could do much worse. Thank you again Tifo !!
