Think about how many more people are born into poverty each year to due to lack of education regarding safe sex practices and lack of access to proper contraception methods. Also consider how immigration to first world countries removes the high skilled labourers from developing countries which pushes down the median salary of those countries. Its a negative feedback loop that really hurts developing economies around the world and that'll only get worse as the population of first world countries get older. At that point we'll have a serious worldwide economic crisis and I'm interested to see how we're going to prepare for it.

As a Newcastle fan, you have summarised my feelings very well. First and foremost, I want Mike Ashley out of the club. He has somehow managed to suck the joy out of supporting my beloved club, and every shred of hope that appears (think the great Rafael Benitez) he manages to crush. I am not asking for an owner who will turn us into title-winners - all I want is a club that has a genuine desire to improve and compete, rather than simply survive. However, there is then the issue of the new owners being one of the worst human rights violators in the world. I feel itâs unfair that our club is singled out - the UAE donât exactly have a sparkling reputation, and there has been plenty of other dealings between Saudi and the UK. Why wasnât human rights an issue when we were selling them weapons? But while this annoys me, I am perfectly aware that doesnât make their purchase of Newcastle any less morally scrupulous. If you were to ask me âIf you could stop the takeover now, would you?â, then I would have no idea how to answer. I would certainly be disappointed if it didnât happen, and we were still stuck with Ashley, but I wish it was anybody other than the Saudis. Maybe, if it goes through, the Saudis are signing up for a higher degree of accountability that goes with a higher public profile. Theyâll be forced to continue opening up the country, and will be discouraged from any further human rights violations. I would not hesitate to use my platform as a Newcastle fan and season ticket holder to protest against any wrongdoing. I hope I have managed to get across the dilemma that the vast majority of Newcastle fans are facing.

Nicely put, as a Newcastle fan I really don't know what to think about all the fingers being pointed at the takeover and Newcastle fans. Of course I don't want someone who is morally compromised to own Newcastle any other owner would have been better, we're not looking for overnight riches we just don't want to be a yo-yo club doing the bare minimum to pull in PL TV money. I just want to enjoy watching our team play again.
Not to take away from the rest of what you're saying, because it's well written, but the human rights violations WERE an issue when we were selling them weapons. That's why we protested and gave the govt. so much shit, so that we would STOP selling them weapons. So please don't use that as a comparison. A lot of us were outraged by that just as much or even more than the Newcastle deal.

As a politics graduate that has specialised in the Middle East, I just want to point out how well researched and brilliant that piece of journalism was. Itâs so important to explain these issues to football fans in a concise palatable way so that everyone can understand the facts. Maybe the athletic can do more than sports journalism. Or can link sports to finance, politics, business and society in a way that has never been done before. Especially as footballers become wealthier, more famous, influential and socially conscious like Rashford.
The opinion of fans sadly doesn't mean much to respective owners of sporting franchises. It's all about the money. Mike Ashley saw a huge payoff and sold Newcastle for $490M to MBS. Fun fact, Mike Ashley's worth actually increased to about $3.5billion in Oct this year
