The Mummy (2017) - Awfully Good Movies

  • This weekend, Universal Pictures is finally doing right by its slate of movie monsters with a little help from Blumhouse Productions for its acclaimed remake of THE INVISIBLE MAN, and Awfully Good Movies is taking you back a mere three years ago to remind you about Universal's previous (and worst) attempt at raising the Universal Monsters back from the dead with Tom Cruise starring in Alex Kurtzman's remake of THE MUMMY! With DRACULA UNTOLD failing to incur any interest in the idea of a shared monster universe, Universal decided to fully commit to its plans for a "Dark Universe" by going all out with a brand new take on Boris Karloff's bandaged baddie. And much like Stephen Sommers' blockbuster MUMMY remake that became a franchise of its own, the 2017 MUMMY would spice things up with some fist-swinging action in between all the scares, with Tom Cruise playing an army soldier and part-time thief who accidentally unleashes the supernatural evil of an ancient Egyptian princess who'd been entombed for dealing with the devil.
Yes, you heard us right: this time, our mummy is all woman--namely the woman who kicked Taron Egerton's ass with her knife legs in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, Sofia Boutella. Plus to tie the installments of this franchise together, we've got Russell Crowe adding some class as the Dark Universe's equivalent to Nick Fury, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who keeps his evil alter ego in check while running a secret organization tasked with rounding up the various Universal Monsters and stopping them from destroying the world. And yet with all of this talent, the new MUMMY was little more than a grab-bag of action movie cliches and obvious CGI that pathetically tried ripping off the Marvel movie formula, along with numerous plot elements from far better movies: AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, Tobe Hooper's LIFEFORCE, and even Tom Cruise's own EDGE OF TOMORROW.
So by failing to commit to the atmospheric horror of the 1932 MUMMY or the adventurous action of the 1999 MUMMY, the 2017 MUMMY left audiences with the worst of the both worlds and immediately killed off future plans for Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's monster and Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man. But hey, now that the Depp-less INVISIBLE MAN remake has finally done right by the Universal Monsters, then perhaps there's some hope left for this "Monster-verse" after all. May I suggest Universal gets to greenlighting MADEA MEETS THE MUMMY?

A first movie about Mr Hyde facing the character of Cruise, building their relationship, as they find a cure and setup their parternship for the future could be decent. That would reduce the obscene amount of exposition that movie had and create a good dynamic for the core duo of that franchise.

Why can't those Universal lackeys let this poor Mummy lie down for a while and take a symbolical breath -along with its fellow monsters? Meanwhile, they could use their time to write good scripts, instead of hollow vessels for hollow people. But one can worry though, for good stories and storytelling are not Blumhouse's cup of tea. Or should say... of blood! [evil maniacal laugh]

  • @bobw1811
    @bobw1811 Před 4 lety +1

To be fair, Universal already did establish a successful shared cinematic universe with their classic monsters. It was actually the FIRST shared cinematic universe. And an argument could be made that the buzz around those movie crossovers of the 30's and 40's is perhaps what inspired some of the first crossovers between comic book characters...without which you wouldn't have an MCU or a DCEU today. And even if that's not the case, there is no doubt in my mind that back in 2007 Marvel Studios (still a fledgling studio belonging to a company that had just narrowly avoided bankruptcy a few years earlier) would never have pulled the trigger on a massive investment like a shared cinematic universe if there wasn't ample precendent for a similarly ambitious approach to cinematic storytelling proving successful for other studios in the past. And by my count there were actually three such examples before the MCU...the Universal Monsters were just the first, followed by the Toho kaiju movies and Kevin Smith's View Askew movies.

Personaly, i liked "The Mummy" (2017). Now,this movie is from a serie which has a "common ground" with other series : "Indiana Jones" :-) This movie, just like its predecesors, doesn't have to be "all serious". The subject is interesting and the tale is a bit different than the other "Mummy" movies. But, that's only my personal opinion. Feel free to have your own ;-)

I tried to watch this movie. Twice. I just couldn't bear to finish it. And what pisses me off even more, is that the Universal Monsters are now going to be seen as Box Office Poison due to the Dark Universe imploding -- it'll be years before we get another attempt, if we even need one.
TL;DR - The Mummy "Son of the Masked" a potential universe.

Say what you will about Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island And Truth or Dare, But if the early reviews of Invisible Man are to go by then Universal should’ve handed the keys to the Monsters and their Dark Universe to Jason Blum in the first place. Especially with the success of the Happy Death Day films and the collaborations with Jordan Peele.
At least Tom Cruise starred in the much better but overlooked by many American Made. Seriously, I think the bad taste of the Dummy Mummy made people not want to see a good movie like that and that’s why it’s not as watched or talked about as much as other films from that year.

The moment you said Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde -movie my brain got wired up.
BOTH Jekyll and Hyde want to gather Universal Monsters, for different reasons and you'll never know which one is in charge. Because they're working for the same goal for different reasons the people who're getting in the crossfire are in a constant state of uncertainty. And because Jekyll is not exactly a good man, but a man without drive or backbone, his solutions are always cautious and because Hyde's style is more aggressive the real handler needs to navigate between these two brilliant but deadly different intellects to find just the perfect strategy to control and unleash the monsters they collect.
It would be like the Dark Avengers Initiative was formed with Van Helsing instead of Nick Fury, and Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde instead of Banner and Grey Hulk.

The Mummy 2017 was the best of them all & I was about as they were dropping. IDK why people/critics hated on it when it was a fucking good movie. No bullshit romance. just a woman who bonded with in a end of life way. definitely. Just action from the Mummy, undead army. Templers were cool AF! Mind Fucks, comedy with his friend & when he said to her the truth about the parachutes. ''Ya a good man. you gave me the last & saved my life..:)'' Tom: ''I thought there was another one...:|''

I don't think anybody thought about this, but considering how Egyptian characters are usually played by non-Egyptian/North African actors, it was cool to see Sofia Boutella play the mummy, since she's of North African descent. I've always liked seeing movies portray things as authentically as possible. Egypt itself is religiously strict and may not have allowed any of their actresses to wear what she wore, even in an American film, and there aren't many Egyptian-American actresses.
Note: Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Witcher for 10 seconds) is also 2nd generation Egyptian-American, both parents being immigrants.

The Problem with The Mummy was Tom Cruise, because that circus midget wrecked the film with his ego and made it all about him when it was to be about Sofia Boutella, The Mummy wasn't the first film that he wrecked with his ego. According to R. Lee Ermey it was Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut that Tom Cruise fucked up. Universal should have gone for either Jason Ritter, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Ryan Gosling, Erick Elias, Paulo Costanzo, Diego Luna, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eddie Redmayne, or Justin Long being how those 10 are close to age with Annabelle Wallis, whereas Tommy Boy is old enough to be her father being how she was 1 when he was in Legend with Tim Curry and Top Gun with Val Kilmer. Plus if Universal had gotten one of those 10, you wouldn't have been hearing bring back Brendan Fraser as much. Because think about this, did you hear people tell Disney and Sony to bring back either Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire when they cast Tom Holland for the role of Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man, not that much and why. Because Tom Holland doesn't have any toxic baggage like Tommy Boy does.
