- With the CONJURING franchise's latest installment THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT scaring audiences in theaters and on HBO Max, Awfully Good Movies is investigating another long-running horror franchise based on a (supposedly) true ghost story with the final theatrically released sequel to THE AMITYVILLE HORROR: AMITYVILLE 3-D!
That's right, the AMITYVILLE series went down the same route as FRIDAY THE 13th, JAWS and so many other movies in 1983 by filming in good old red-and-blue 3D to have the supernatural scares coming towards the audience's faces. But due to a lawsuit against producer Dino De Laurentiis from the Lutz family that fled the Amityville house after 28 days of ghostly torture, the movie's advertising had to specify that it was not a sequel to either THE AMITYVILLE HORROR or AMITYVILLE II.
That was probably for the best though, because the third AMITYVILLE could very well be one of the least scary horror "sequels" in history, with the plot centering around a skeptical journalist played by ANNIE HALL co-star Tony Roberts who moves into the house to prove that the alleged hauntings were a bunch of hooey. In spite of its cheesy 3D gimmick and having both a pre-fame Lori Loughin and Meg Ryan pop up in the cast, AMITYVILLE 3D has far more endless exposition dialogue than horrific encounters with demons and ghosts, with the movie's few kills lacking any balls due to its PG rating. Whether or not the story of the Amityville Horror is true, the third film based on it is truly terrible, with or without the cardboard glasses. And just you wait until AMITYVILLE 4, where the main villain of the film...is a demonically possessed lamp. "Get out", indeed.

I haven't seen Land of the Dead since I saw it in the theater at 15. Thought it was great though. If George Romero turned out to be a huge fan of AMITYVILLE 3D, then awesome.

Amityville has changed their street names and numbers, because they were tired of the tourists. The people who own the house now, also changed the windows so that the home is no longer recognizable. There have been a few owners since the Lutz’s, and none of them had any problems.

this is the first Amityville movie to mention the real life killers name "ron defeo". the first Amityville played it safe and never mentioned the name. the 2nd one had the thinly disguised "Montelli" family. so i give this movie props for mentioning the real name.
and the "demon puppet" at the end of the movie was actually seen briefly in Amityville 2 at the end as well...

We see it briefly at the end of 2 when Sonnys face cracks open to reveal the demon underneath. The creature reminds me very much of the alien from Xtro. 😳

I love "so bad, it's good!' horror movies, and Amityville 3-D is one of my favorites. Poor Candy Clark has a sad and awful end in this one. She could be considered quite a scream queen, as she is in several of my favorites: the 80s remake of "The Blob" and "Q - The Winged Serpent". This movie does have a genuinely creepy and haunting scene. When the teenage daughter returns to the house and ascends the stairs, dripping wet, and responding to her concerned mother with a strange look. Turns out, she's been drowned in the lake.
It's the best scene of the movie, really creepy 👻

Man, the 3D trend of the 80’s gave us a lot of stinkers.
Amityville II the Possession is SO evil. This one is pretty good too, and I actually saw it in 3D when it came out. It doesn't need the 3D, because the movie is actually really good.
The really haunted film of the series is Amityville: The Awakening. That one is cursed by its producer, Harvey W.
You aren’t kidding. That movie was sitting on the back-burner for YEARS. It got the New Mutants treatment and just kept getting its release date pushed back. And after seeing the finished product? I get it.
My Dad thought it would be funny to take my mom and I to the original Amityville at a drive in back in the late 70s. Ol' man had a Chevy van, wall to wall shag carpet, and a bean bag for me. Mom thought we were going to see the comedy Hotstuff with Dom Deluise, but I remember looking down the rows of other movies playing, and that was one of em'. My mom at the same time seen the same thing and said, Shane!!!! What movie is this? Knowning full well what he'd done and knew I couldn't watch it. She was pissed. I hid in the back and listened after the red eyes in the windows appeared. Scared the shit out of a 3 yr old me. Couldn't look out of dark open windows for years. Thanks Dad!!!! Lol!!!

Check out Angel Heart sometime, I’d love your take on it. It’s a criminally underrated supernatural noir starring Robert DeNiro and Mickey Rourke. It’s like Rosemary’s baby meets Chinatown and was super controversial on its release due to the …how to describe it… the blood banging scene.

@@anubusx same. I’m actually re-reading the sequel novel Hjortsberg’s estate released last year. I just love the original book/movie so much. There’s so much atmosphere and dread and that ending? It’s such a slow burn, I love it. I really dig the sequel novel too.

I did get some creep-outs from this movie as a little kid. The demon's face in the picture might seem silly now, but man....that was in my nightmares.
Does anyone else remember that incoherent and insane Omen sequel that was made for TV? It kinda reminds me of amityville 3-D.
I actually gave up on watching the OMEN series as a kid after the first movie bored me to tears, although I love it now. Will have to give that franchise a watch for a future review.

@Robert Hunt 1-3 I really dig. I especially enjoy 1&2 and Sam Neil gives a great performance in 3. Part 4 just kinda sucks. It’s cheap, dull, and the demonic child and subsequent deaths are really uninspired and boring.

I watched all these as a kid there was so many sequels or spin-offs
So I actually caught this one when I was like 8. I haven't seen the other 2 Amityville movies but this one stuck with me because I was way to young to watch it and despite the bad acting it keep me up at night for a year. I took me years to even figure out it was this movie and not the other 2 because of how unknown this version is.
This flick sucks but there is a wicked fun quality about it and will watch it whenever it is on. I love this $hi!!y movie, a lot.

It's About Time is something of a cult classic among Horror fans of a certain generation. It's literally the only Amityville film after 2 which is worth paying money to see.
He should have known there was a problem when the elevator had a 13th floor….
As a kid, that demon scared me, as did other parts of the movie. Now, as an adult, I see just how hokey this movie is. And that demon? Oh lordy.......lol
I grew up on this movie. I still have the RCA VideoDisc of it somewhere. LOL
It’s nowhere near as good as the original. And for a time, I actually thought it was one of those Made-For-TV specials because of the cheapness-look.

The narrator for this one sounds like Offhand Disney.
the German DVD includes the anaglyph 3D version but as to be expected it only gives you double vision

I really enjoy the first seven Amityville movies… except for this one. I weirdly enjoy 4 through 7 but this is the only one that’s a painful slog to get through.
I thought this was the one with the haunted lamp.
