Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan - Awfully Good Movies

- The Halloween season has finally come upon us, and while this year's Halloween celebrations may be a bit more socially distanced than most, that won't stop us from dealing with a deadly threat that's been in our country longer than COVID has--Jason Voorhees, whose murder spree began 40 years ago with FRIDAY THE 13th (technically 39 years ago with PART 2, but whatevs), and which almost came to an end 31 years ago with the eighth installment in 1989--JASON TAKES MANHATTAN!
With Paramount Pictures concerned about the underwhelming box office for PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, they decided that Jason's next adventure would take the mute masked mongoloid from the rustic woods of Camp Crystal Lake to the bright lights of the big city known as New York. But before you get too excited by the prospect of Jason slicing his machete through Times Square, you should know that Paramount wasn't willing to spend the money that was needed to actually have most of the film take place in New York City, with Jason instead boarding a cruise ship containing a graduating high school class that's on their way to a senior trip in the Big Apple, and only the film's final 30 minutes actually taking place in New York--well, Vancouver passing for New York, to be specific, but still! And with the studio unwilling to give this FRIDAY a bigger budget to help Jason actually take Manhattan, the film ended up with the lowest box office gross of the franchise to date, and Paramount washed their hands of the series by selling it off to New Line Cinema.

The ending is what hurts it the most even if the rest of the movie had been cool New York stuff you would still have the movie end with that silly convoluted ending.
There are enough movies shot in and tributed to NYC anyway...I feel like trying to cram in all the famous locations would've been pointless anyway for the Friday formula..I mean Jason in a boxing match in Madison Square Garden?? Sounds good on paper but I don't think all the ideas would have translated very good on screen..Just my opinion.

This is a fun movie, even if it was mostly shot on a boat, and had the worst unmasking of the series.
Sucks we never got a New York map for the videogame, I still play that, Retro Jason 4 Life.
The ship gives it almost a claustrophobic feeling imo like not only is there a killer lurking around but we're in the middle of nowhere, trapped by water.
Despite the lack of blood and actual New York City, this movie is still fun to watch. Plus, you get a Jason vs Jason moment in the diner.
I remembered it very differently. Granted, I'd first seen it when I was about five and it was airing on one of the premium networks. But it's really bad now... I'm 36 and re-watched it when I was about 25 and could barely sit through it.
People like to pretend that the franchise 'died' when Jason took on a member of the X-Men in 'Part VII', but I'd definitely point the finger at this one. Unoriginal, boring, predictable, etc. Everything about this movie is so disposable.
@@christianc.christian5025 Friday the 13th 7 is still just a standard Friday movie it just happens to have a psychic in it overall the first Friday is a murder mystery mother killer revenge film. The rest starting with part 2 are just fun Jason B movie slasher flicks Parts 5 and 8 are the 2 worst films in the series with 8 being slightly weaker still 8 has some fun moments the boat setting isn't too bad but you want more New York and even though what we get in New York is somewhat fun it still isn't much there and the teen characters are the worst of the series. The biggest problem with part 8 besides not enough New York is the ending Jason's death is just weak and overly supernatural the movie treats Jason as if he is like a spirit haunting the lake and the main character so when he dies at the end we the audience get the symbol that his spirit is now free because we see dead child Jason laying on the ground lol. Overall I can watch this this one as an OK time waster still but it is easily the worst of the series in terms of actual quality.
It's not terrible but it's not going to be my first recommendation if somebody asks me about one of the Friday movies to watch that's never seen any of them before. For this franchise I would honestly just recommend watching them all back to back...You have to see them all to understand how wacky and wild the whole franchise is lol.

The song Darkest Side of Night to me at the end of Jason Takes Manhattan is a perfect good bye song to the 80s. It ends the era of neon camp on a beautiful note.

I've never understood the hate for Jason Takes Manhattan..Yes it was barely filmed in NYC because of budget but besides that it's still something different and the fact that it takes place on a ship kinda ups the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped by water with a killer onboard...I get it.

I always liked Part 8. Back then, the same. It has the best looking Jason. Love the sewer scenes. A bad movie title and badly censored gore almost killed this fun movie. That has nothing to do with the movie as it's a fun ride.
I actually enjoyed this one, I know some say this is the worst one but they clearly haven't seen Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday.

@@raiNhawk05 Jason goes to Hell is a good slasher B movie it just isn't a good Jason movie. Jason X though knew what it was and never pretended to be something else. If you have followed the series until Jason X by that point the franchise had gotten crazy and over the top and Jason X makes sense in terms of where they are headed by that point in the series and there also isn't anything else to do with Jason by then. The Friday series is just a B movie slasher series the only difference with X is that it totally embraces it and says let's have fun. Takes Manhattan is the worst in terms of execution because of what it sets up for itself and after setting through 7 other movies 8 feels the dullest because it offers nothing new.

This is my favorite movie in the franchise. It really was a good movie and having Jason on the boat even during most of the movie is actually a pretty good premise. When the producers found out that they were going to hardly have any time in the city, they should have made the title boat oriented instead of JTM. The advertisements should have been spun more around the boat as opposed to the city. The series just came out of what is regarded as one of the series best(pt.7) so there would definitely have been an audience for it and there would be no concept of false advertisement.
Friday the 13th part 7 is my favorite the Kane Hodder era begain and the make-up for Jason was the greatest.
I enjoyed this one alot despite all its flaws. It really could have been a stand alone horror movie about a serial slasher stalking kids on a cruiseship for graduation.

This was the first Friday film I saw in its entirety and that is the reason why I became such a huge Jason Voorhees fan. I know this film has problems, I don't care I love this film. It is my favorite in the series.

ROFL I got a phone call while watching this and hit pause and when I got back I realized I had 20:55 freeze framed. Glad noone was around.
At least they tried something different with this one besides another group of teens at Crystal Lake. Had they been able to afford the budget to actually shoot the entire film in NY with a longer runtime, this would've been ranked more higher. I watch this one more than Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Friday the 13th (2009).

I may not like this movie because of the faults it has such as the heavily censored kills and the story, but I like this one because this was the last movie of the 80s.

Jason X is actually my favorite of the franchise, whereas Jason Goes To Hell is the one I dislike the most. Weird how my favorite and least favorite were released sequentially next to each other.

I legitimately enjoy this film. It definitely is flawed and doesn't have enough Manhattan but the boat setting was unique to the series and I enjoyed kane hodder as jason and the lead of the film was a decent actress.

In the 80s it would have been Jason takes Sex World, Jason takes the Grindhouse, Jason takes the Souvlaki Stand in Times Square, Jason takes Carnage Hall, Jason takes the A Train, Jason takes Broadway (He's got a dance in his feet and a machete in your heart).

Paramount Pictures nearly got into legal action with the City of New York because of the original poster with Jason Voorhees slashing across the I Love New York logo. So they changed it and all was right with the world.
