WTF Happened to JIM CARREY?

- In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In our latest episode we tackle the ultra funnyman Jim Carrey, who has built an empire out of his rubber-faced comedic antics, leaving a long list of fan-favorite films in his wake. Carrey started out like most comedians, doing stand-up, before landing a role on the TV ensemble In Living Color, which rocketed him to Hollywood. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective lit the fuse and from there the actor stacked gem after gem onto his resume. Then, Carrey tried his hand at some more dramatic fare with both good and not-so-good results. Then, his work became more sporadic and he began to develop his tastes as an artist and painter, while dealing with some personal issues as well. But, Carrey can't be kept down and continues to reemerge from time to time to show that he's still here and still got what it takes, even though we still have to ask the question; WTF Happened to Jim Carrey?

Jim Carrey only made the Grinch because of his daughter, he has said in interviews he played the roll for her and would have done it for free, so any critique of it didn't matter to him, as long as his daughter enjoyed it.
Well, his daughter, and the fat paycheck.
Fuck the critique
His parents an brother also played rolls in the Grinch movie

Also Jim Carey:
“We have to say yes to socialism - to the word and everything,” Mr. Carrey said Friday on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” “We have to stop apologizing.”

Ok, make me rich and famous and I will tell you how good my life is.
@Mr. Friendship It's a great quote, offered as advice to those still seeking answers in materialistic things. 9 out of 10 of us are still stuck, just hairless apes too busy grabbing the next guy's banana to even consider the things Jim says.
It really is sad that there are people too indoctrinated by FAUX Nooz to understand it and just go "Wah libbrulls".

He should’ve gotten an Oscar for Truman and Man in the moon. And yes, I loved cable guy.

Writing in the comments on YT. What could be better than that?

He has sex with babies and drinks their blood.
I'm Jim its my pleasure you're so welcome
You just did! I bet he read it!
i wrote a paper about how the cable guy was a masterpiece in high school, got 100% on it, never had full credit before or after, it was my crowning achievement academically.
I loved the Cable Guy. Great dark comedy. It's a really underappreciated movie. I remember seeing it in theatres when it came out. Not many people there but I sure enjoyed it!
I wrote a paper on the Truman show and got 100%
And you were right. That movie is amazing on every level. I remember watching it with my family and they were all like "this isn't as funny as Ace Ventura." Dark comedies never landed well at my house, lol.
The Cable Guy was such a fantastic film. Its definitely what made me like him. I found him almost intolerable before, and the irony that the intolerable Chip was so endearing and identifiable, in an adolescent way? I would love to read your paper, and the guy who done The Truman Show one. Great films and great choices for papers. 👍👍
Rly? What was the gist of it? Something along the lines "the two leads are probably two of the most disgusting, despicable persons in Hollywood, possibly the world..."? Cause that's what JC and MB are...
The guy who didn't have it, then got it and then realised it wasn't worth it. Whatever, he is incredibly talented. I love his movies.
Bruce The Almighty has always been my favorite from him. I watch it once every 2-3 years. :)

@Zayne simard moore I agree. He tasted success, and realized how empty it was.
Spot on.
Right on!!
I saw Jim Carey's original stand-up routine in 1982 at a club called The Cowboy in Brantford Ontario Canada, my girlfriend and I were only 10 feet away, Jim's rubber face was unbelievable as he worked into different characters such as Clint Eastwood, Michael Landon, etc, it was so believable that you where astonished at his performance, UNFORGETTABLE!!!!
Yeah, sounds like a life-defining moment. Kind of like being the first person to see the Beatles before Pete Best left. Jealous of you.
Thank you for sharing! Really cool to hear
john candy + jim carrey both were from newmarket/keswick area of ontario!!!!
I saw him sometime around 82....he was playing at Swanees comedy underground in Seattle....sooo funny....my face hurt the next day.....hahaha
Why no mention of "the number 23"!? That was such a fantastic film! I love that film. I think it's one of his best films.
He's spent a career playing character's because he didnt want to face up to being himself. Could see it in every interview, if a question got hard, out came a new face or new gag. Depression is hell
@Dora Arnold Obviously this insight comes from seeing patterns of behavior in others that we recognize from introspection and self-analysis.
If we had to wait until we were perfect before making any commentary on them, we'd all be dead before we tried to speak.
@Dora Arnold Can you explain/expand on that?
Is that his excuse for being such an asshole?
Life like a box of choclate

@Stuart Beatty he's not being judgemental, he's making an observation.
He lived to make his parents happy, though he was sad.
Then he lived to make the world laugh and be happy.
Though he himself didn't feel seen.
He was hurting.
Hurting is a part of the human condition. Celebrities just highlight this fact for us.
I never laughed so hysterycally until I watched Ace Ventura. Love Jim.
That was a lovely film. It looked like he really got along with the animals in the movie.
that is why Jim is not playing much anymore. Audience demanded of him absolutely retarded bottom feeder comedy like Ace Ventura while he was so much more. Unfortunately average viewer is to dumb to even understand some of Jims jokes.
Jim Carrey i dont kno if ur seeing this but thank you for all the years of joy u brought me.....miss seeing u on tv and movies
"The cable guy" is such an underrated movie.
Cable Guy is the iconic movie, you might not watch twice, but you still have to go watch it.
Is it tho? At the time of its release yes but now its liked by most people that like jim carreys movies.

@@dakotamanns2644that is exactly what the insane person would say.
Joseph Hall you’ll never get it.
“I love you Phillip Morris” is an unsung hero to this mans legacy. One of his good movies that should of been talked about here but still a great vid of Jim’s life.
Serious question- why wouldn’t a performance like his in “Ace Ventura” never get big nominations for Oscar? He’s incredible in it. Every moment.
you are right, but getting an Oscar is like joining a ferternity. It looks cool to everyone else and on paper, but the person joining has no idea what they are getting into. I personally think Jim Carrey could care less receiving anything but they money he deserved so he could do what he wanted to do in life. A free spirit. Maybe his perormance should entilte him to an Oscar, but who really cares about that anyway. As Jim would say in the Mask,
"They love me, they realllly love me." 🥰🙄
If he was a transgender African American he would have would have had a solid chance. He was ahead of his genitalia.
oscars don't go to comedies. they go to biopics and historical dramas.
@Mr Fake that makes no sense. 😂 He didn't get one cause Hollywood hated him.
Your quote from Jim Carrey about Jim Carrey: "Jim Carrey doesn't exist. Jim Carrey is just an idea" is very reminiscent of the opening monologue to American Psycho.

@@shakesfirst2443 edgy
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e It's only edgy if you're a sad little shit.
@@shakesfirst2443 Yes, I'm sure he signed a contract. And while I'm no Hollywood insider, I'd be willing to bet that included in that contract were provisions for being available for promotion of the finished product. However, my larger point was that if he felt the movie's ethics were lacking because it "glorified gun violence", then why are you even willing to act in it? Why create a product that you are unwilling to be proud to promote? For example, if I think that recreational use of Meth is bad, I'm not going to help someone set up a Meth Lab, then later say with grandiose condescension, "Oh, I don't believe in taking Meth, it ruins lives..."
when pet detective came out most of us spent half the movie crying we where laughing so hard
Yeah because we were 8 and it was funny when you were 8. I tried watching it now and all I felt was confusion.
Damian Cunliffe you lost touch with your inner child then. sad.
Its a kids movie
I adore Jim Carrey as the funny man and his serious roles. I know he’s been through a lot and although I miss the silly wacky Jim , I’m happy he’s found an inner peace. He will always be special in my eyes. I’ve laughed at his comedy and cried at his serious roles. Which I also loved. You know I wish I could go up to him and give him a big hug and say I love you for who you are. An amazing human being. ❤️❤️❤️
You don’t know who he is. You only know what you’ve seen on screens.
I've always liked Jim's acting. The problem is that comedy changes with the times and many of the old performers don't know how to reinvent themselves. I like Adam Sandler but his style is also old and I think he realizes that since he is taking on more credible roles. But to look back on both of them you realize that almost every movie is the same thing as the last one, the result causing it to lose a little more luster with each new release.
Surprised he didn’t mention “Yes Man”

SOOOOO TRUEEEEEEEE
He was already the Riddler and blew it
I agree. he is one of the few who could of mentally handled the part and helped it be great
I think Jim Carey has a lot to say, but he can't. He was in the thick of Hollywood and feels remorse for what he really knows about the business. I hope he finds some peace through his turmoil.
He most def. had to participate in acts, he not only regrets but anybody with a consious mind may consider , inhumane.
@@twatfisher3 I believe Shia LaBeouf was privy to all of this too. They both completely dropped off the scene and lead their lives in non-conventional ways. They are feeling remorse and outrage and it is coming through in their art. Look at the video of Sia's Elastic Heart, he is in it. Very telling video without saying a word.
And in that business, they have ways of keeping us silent. If only we had means by which to defend ourselves from being silenced by the elite.

Same with most of them. And musicians. One example is kurt cobaine I know for sure, he didnt write teen spirit, he hated it too. They have people who write these songs and use the peoples lives and interesting backstories, and styles to push agendas for the generation at the time. It's all control.
Observe how people suddenly dressed and how nirvana "took over the music world" for so long, and how they pushed that grunge lifestyle for so long, and the generation ate it up.

The Cable Guy is my favorite Carrey movie. I think his reputation did the film a disservice because people were expecting the same tone as Ace Ventura. The film floats somewhere in the murky middle of psychological thriller, comedy, and drama. There aren't a whole lot of films like it and I think Carrey's performance is severely underrated.
The awesome power driving song Leave Me Alone seems to be fitting for the changes he morphed into. Dunno what inspired Cantrell or if Jim collaborated with him for the lyrics , but i picture Carrey singing it in total sincerity every time I hear

If we really look at hilarious actors or comedians, most will have depression. We saw this in Robin Williams, so we must show the actors love and be there for them in thick and thin.
doug nut very true but the majority of regular people are not under a microscope like celebrities - I’m not saying their issues are more credible or bigger than those who aren’t famous - just look at brendan fraser, a man who was absolutely demolished by critical reviews professionally and emotionally, with support from die hard fans and second chances from studios he’s making his way back

"we must show the actors love". Maybe that is part of the problem. Love the work, hate the work. But that isn't who they are. Because of my job I worked with many famous people. I treated them with respect just like I do with everyone I work with. And that was all anyone wants. Treat them like real people and you'll see real people. Idolize them and they will be distant, aloof and cautious. People want something from famous people. Their picture, their autograph, a moment of their time. Stop it. They gave at the office. Being with famous people is enlightening. They aren't magical. They have nothing that will rub off on you. Stop trying to give them something so they will give you something incredible in return.

A thoughtful and fitting tribute to a great man, who seems to be at peace with himself now. My favorite Jim Carrey quote goes something like this; 'I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.'
Pretty sure he tried backing out of his blood oath that most if not all entertainers have to sign to get to the top. A close friend of mine explained it something like this, once they discover your weakness they exploit it and use it against you.
This gentleman came through the side door into Hollywood as a bodyguard and was so personable that he quickly started working for personalities like Janet Jackson and Prince, who he later worked for almost exclusively. One night at Prince's nightclub he was upstairs doing some paperwork and an impeccably dressed Man walked up and started talking to him, it was more of a getting to know you conversation but he couldn't help but notice that "Not a hair was out of place, not a stitch of his $10,000 suit was a miss. Shortly after he was brought into the boardroom and all he could tell me was that he had to sign a document or else he had to quit the business. That was when I reconnected with him back home where we came from, and he is still a bit tight-lipped about it all.

What if you woke up and saw 40 400 pound fat dudes standing in your living room debating about what's the best snack cakes.
The Number 23 movie really shows his seriousness
Everyone hated on that movie and I absolutely loved it🤷🏿♀️
Agreed.... I love that movie but it definitely had a deeper meaning.
I agree I love the Cable Guy
I find it odd that you never mentioned Yes Man (2008,) one of his least known movies, I guess, also one of my favorites.
Well done!!!
I can’t believe that you just brushed through “The Majestic!?! Jim Carrey‘s all out BEST dramatic role!
I loved that movie.
Forgot all about that movie.
if it ended with, "and that's the way the cookie crumbles"... you would of gotten a 5-star rating on yelp
You hit this video out the park
Ace Ventura Pet Detective is still absolutely hilarious to this day!
Just curious on why there was no mention of one of his best movies “The number 23”?
*slams hands on table* THANK YOU!
I was gonna ask this question. It is in my opinion his best movie. Dude was amazing in it. And the premise of the movie was different. Numerology is a beast of it's own and Jim made it convincing.
I have thought the same thing!
i thought i would just check the comments first to see if another lover of it was switched on , excellent flik ...
My question also, I was waiting for that movie to come up, but no mention of it..
Yo... this is Appreciated. Jim is a living Great. Just one thing. it was Jim's dad that made the faces and comedies when they were homeless. Jim said his dad is his greatest hero
"In Living Color". Fireman Bill 😂
I remember an old interview where Jim said he snapped one day (before he got famous) and brought a baseball bat to work to beat down the first person that pissed him off. I think of that every time I see him.. I think he said he was a janitor or some kind of custodian at the time
Jim Carried away
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fractures my heart a little every time I watch it.
Mr. Carey and Mr. Williams are my all time favorite actors..Genius in their rolls
I enjoyed that video.... in fact "I liked it a lot" 👍👍Shout out from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Both Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Yes Man affected me years after. The former made me pause and appreciate what I already had while the latter was a big inspiration in my career. Love the dude and the work he has done.
... Recently I managed to talk my son into watching Sonic in English just because "Dr Robotic in English will be worth it", best dad accomplishment yet .)
