WTF Happened to MIKE MYERS?

  • In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In our latest episode we take a look at the funnyman genius that is Mike Myers, who has had a long career of hilarious and memorable characters (and a few not-so-memorable ones) throughout his film and TV career thus far. Myers first rose to prominence with his various performances on SNL, even translating one of them, WAYNE'S WORLD, to the big screen with great success. He followed that up with the oft-forgotten gem SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER and then a sequel to WAYNE'S WORLD, before giving us the cultural phenomenon that is AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY. Two sequels (and a few smaller films) later, Myers dabbled in Dr. Suess with THE CAT IN THE HAT, which bombed at the box office and put Myers off the live-action grid, instead continuing his voiceover work for the famous animated SHREK series. He returned four years later with THE LOVE GURU, which sadly didn't get much love in theaters. After an almost unrecognizable appearance in Quentin Tarantino's INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, Myers disappeared from live action films, only recently returning for the Oscar-winning BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. What gives? Where's he been? Why has he denied us his comedy genius for so long and will he be back? Join us as we catch up and find out WTF happened to Mike Myers!

When actors won't get in line and do what ppl say they gain the title of hard to work with. Edward Norton cares about the movies he's making and wants them to be good and he has that title also. He's turned down hundreds of roles waiting for a good script. He cares what his name is on and cares about the viewer. He's fought to change certain aspects of films and dialog because they were garbage. Caring about the end product should be everyone but it's not. That's why we have the same blockbuster actors getting recycled for every new blockbuster film. Theyre recyclable actors for recyclable films. They have no problem getting in line and putting their name and face all over remakes, beat to death franchises, and just awful movies with no care about the end product or the audience as long as they get paid. Not saying all directors or actors are doing this like Dune was awesome in my opinion. Everyone cared about that film and it shows in my opinion.

Holy crap, I can't believe Wayne's World is 30 years old already. I still remember when it first came out. I was 10. And it was HUGE. Everyone, from elementary school kids to college kids, were obsessed with that film during the early-mid 90s. "Wayne" and "Garth" were household names all across the US, in practically every household. And quotes and one-liners from the film were said constantly by people of all ages. It's like you couldn't even make it through one single day without hearing at least a few of your friends or family members make some Wayne's World reference. It really was a massive hit. Just blows my mind that it was 30 years ago already. That just blows my mind.

I love the Love Guru movie. I think anyone who has spent some time dedicated to meditation, gurus and Vedic based studies including just following Deepak Chopra appreciates the reverent dethroning that mike delivered. This space of often self appointed gurus, hierarchies, secret knowledge, pseudo science, people thinking they know what happens when we die, pretending to have powers, pretending to be all knowing, needs to be smacked down every now and then. He was making fun of how the HIndu traditions were packaged a certain way and sold to westerners who added their own idiocy to it. Penelope Spheeris wanted to use Queen and Mike said it was "old" and young people would think it was lame. At the premiere, when people cheered at the scene, then he admitted "ok, I'm glad we went with that song." He was difficult about using it, not about putting it in. When the prop guy brought out the guitar and amp for Mike to play I helped him (I'm a guitar player) he needed to replace the amp and he didn't know how to tune the guitar so I tuned it. So, Mike and Dana do their bit and knock the guitar out of tune and between the two of them they couldn't re tune the guitar... The prop guy pointed to me and had me come over. Dana wanted nothing to do with me (jerk) but Mike stayed in character and asked me if I could wail. What I find interesting is that he may have been
difficult to work with but I never heard any of them
complain while he was making them Millions...!
Most good actors are difficult to work with because
they develop a vision and feel for what their character
is like, how they act and respond to things, along with
how the story plot should progress...!
If the writers, directors, and executives attempt to change
those visions in any way, then of course the actors are
going to get pissed and be difficult...!
People need to remember that it’s their ass up there on the
      big screen...!
If an actor’s performance comes across as lacking or down
right bad, then they pay the price for it and it can effect their
      future acting careers...!
What’s even worse is when an actor gives their all and puts out
an amazing performance but the movie is looked upon as being
bad because of poor directing or a poorly written story line as
these things can effect an actor’s future too...!

I don't think he needs a "comeback" - he's not forgotten and despite any amount of bad reputation in Hollywood the population hasn't turned on him. If he chooses a role and does a great job (he's certainly capable of that, it's just a matter of choosing good material) and it's popular he could be an overnight sensation... again.
Incidentally I'm gay, and I never felt any of his stuff was homophobic, and I don't think any of my gay friends did either. I suspect he's one of the few people who can tell gay jokes and be laughing with us instead of at us. But I think there is at least one requirement: humility. Mel Gibson never truly got why his expulsion from entertainment didn't just go away. I think because it's clear he never really felt he was wrong. RDJ only needed a few years off to realize he'd screwed up, royally, and that forgiveness demanded atonement. He did it. So did John Travolta, though his wore off pretty quick.

The cat in the hat movie was awesome. In no way was that a children's movie. It's one of those movies where your kid ask you what's a dirty hoe and you uncomfortably have to say a gardening tool.

Mate, you nailed it! A very balanced 'report'. I wish Mike nothing but the best, if he wants to live at home and live in relative comfort the rest of his days, good luck to him. I'm glad he was 'difficult' on set, he got things done the way he wanted them, shrek needed Scottish Mike Myers.
This is a total tangent, but I was told that when it came time to release 'Terminator' in dubbed versions for many and diverse European/Asian languages, it was dubbed in Germany and Austria, not with Arnold's voice (because locally, he sounded like a yokel and not at all cool?)
Your glasses, hand them to me my lovely, ooh arr, I will return at some time or leave them at your mother's house, taa!
Keep enjoying what you are doing, I haven;t subbed yet but I am highly impressed. That is not a test, rather the entire subject is removed from my centre of interest and quite frankly (when I lost my original account) I'm kinda enjoying finding new stuff? I'll def check you again.
    Respect and Pax.

I wouldn't doubt if Mike is actually not difficult to work with. And him saying "I'm here to work, not make friends." was a light shined on the behavior and ways of being of those like who he worked with. It sounds like he's there to make masterpieces, or at least try, and most others are there to be famous in a movie...

Imagine a couple middle aged 80s rockers who dont understand the modern culture and they need to make podcasts or something because cable tv views are going down. My favorite creative choice by Mike Myers HAS to be that 1) he chose and insisted on Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne’s World even when producers didn’t want it THEN. In the Queen biopic 20 years later he plays the music executive (heavily disguised costume) who refuses to sign Queen bc Bohemian Rhapsody “is never going to be a song kids can crank up the volume and bang their heads to” 🥹🥹🥹 being the biggest fan of Wayne’s World as a small child I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when I saw that scene in theaters…. You HAVE to love Queen and you HAVE to love Wayne’s World for that reference to even cross your radar. *chefs kiss*
