WTF Happened to BEN AFFLECK?

- In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In this episode we look at the career of Ben Affleck, who rose to fame in the early days of Kevin Smith with indie hits like CHASING AMY and MALLRATS, as well as a memorable turn in Richard Linklater's DAZED AND CONFUSED. However, it was his co-scripting and acting in GOOD WILL HUNTING that really put him on the map and opened up doors for all types of leading man roles, including Michael Bay's ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR, John Frankenheimer's REINDEER GAMES, the Tom Clancy adaptation THE SUM OF ALL FEARS and the lead in Marvel's DAREDEVIL. However, he hit a snag at GIGLI with then spouse Jennifer Lopez and did a number of smaller films before emerging as a director with THE TOWN. From there, Affleck was on fire again, following up with another directorial gig, ARGO, which took home the gold. He continued this hot streak with David Fincher's GONE GIRL before becoming a superhero again, this time for Zack Snyder's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and JUSTICE LEAGUE. From there his next directorial effort, LIVE BY NIGHT, fizzled and Affleck's personal life suffered as well, battling divorce and alcoholism. The actor sought help and worked hard to get sober, next appearing in THE WAY BACK, which tackles those very demons. Affleck has a number of projects lined up from here and is looking healthy and strong yet again, ready to deliver more good work on top of his already massively impressive resume. Also, he was the BOMB in PHANTOMS, yo!
We love ya, Ben!

#BenAffleck #WTFHappenedTo - Zábava
Batman v Superman is not Ben Affleck's fault, it's Warner Bros. fault.
Ben was a pretty great Batman overall... in some really bad movies. BvS is beautifully filmed though, so many shots in that which just needs a basic instagram filter to essentially be directly from a graphic novel. Even if he never directs again then Snyder should be a legendary cinematographer.
He had a big part to play in its failure, I much preferred his work in The Town and Dogma
Ben affleck has alot of control over the screenwriting and the directing of BvS. Warner execs took over Justice League
His Batman was the only good thing about that movie
Not his fault? If he read the script, it was HIS fault! :)
My favorite Ben Affleck performance was the one South Park when he falls in love with Cartman's J-Lo hand puppet. Classic!
"Oh Ben you are so peeerrfect
@@JustNodIfYouCanHearMe77 taco taco taco burrito
Yessss
Oh my God this made me laugh
Great writing on that one as usual (from South Park).
.
Even with him cheating on her and everything else Jen Garner still drove him to rehab but also stopped at In and Out on the way. That’s a saint.
I agree what a saint she is🙏👏
Jennifer is such an angel and saint. She never speaks ill of Ben & coparents their daughters with him even though they divorced. That is a true supporter
That’s how you know you’re the one who ruined the relationship.
Her stopping at a White Castle would've ended everything then and there.
Shes a really classy woman, to treat him with that kindness after what he did.
I recommend "The Accountant" it's an entertaining movie sans the normal cliche action set pieces, not great, but fun.
I’ll admit it: I quite enjoyed The Accountant. Not amazing or anything, like you said, but I did like it👍
need an even better sequel , but seems highly unlikely
Yeah, it's one of those movies that needs an antagonist that has little range. In fact, the less range the better. Was watchable I must admit.
The Accountant was great !
until about 80,90 minutes in when it got really really f8ckn stupid.
Wow wow The Accountant was great. Not sure what y'all are smoking.
How did The Accountant get omitted from this list? Love that friggin movie!
“The Town “and “Gone baby gone” are really good! I believe he’s at his best behind to camera.
Argo?
Yes Argo 👍🏼 I forgot.
Although I enjoy The Town the most of all his directorial efforts . It’s a movie that’s rewatchable.
dre morgan To me, The Town didn’t have enough of a story. Gone Baby Gone was good but again not great. Finally saw it on Netflix a few months ago.
Captain Freedom I’ve come to like them more and more over the years . I think Ben captures the Boston area really well especially in his characters. Ed Harris is phenomenal in Gone baby gone although his screen time is small . “The Florist” to me from The Town I always thought was a interesting guy . I certainly come to enjoy certain parts anyways . I like the last 20 or 30 mins of the Town. If it’s ever on Tv I seem to always watch it 😆
Love how you approach these WTF Happen videos Joe..
Keep it up. We have enough TMZs in the world.
Ben Affleck is one of those actors whom I appreciate more as he gets older. Same with Leonardo Di Caprio
Please note: It was mentioned that Ben directed Amy Smart in ‘Gone Baby Gone’ when in fact it was Amy Ryan.
micheals gf in the office :B
I really did enjoy Argo but personally, I thought The Accountant was his best work
The accountant fucking kicks ass! Also, I loved Batman vs Superman (the 3 hour rated R version)
Agreed!
Indeed it was, I also enjoyed Dogma
Gone Girl & The Town were 10x’s better than both of those
@@uhuhuh1966 the town was great, Gone Girl was not my thing
For the record, Ben didn't "reach out for help." Jennifer Garner saw the pictures on TMZ of Ben bringing in a case of vodka and she drove over to the house. She's the real hero in all this.
Lol, he's a piece of shit and she's unfuckable to anyone with standards
@@empirestr31 wow someone didn't eat their breakfast 😂
in black and white and who are you?
in black and white dude what ? Jennifer garner is smokin hot. Not as much anymore but still hot

We need The Accountant 2
Yep
It's coming.
@@garyangel3885 WHEN !!
The Accountant is a great film, you should definetely check it out!
And his Batman performance was truly great, no matter the quality of the films.
agreed and agreed !
HAHAHAHAHA.. its crap
The Accountant IS great! Very well made. You're hes a great batman. I'm bummed we wont get to see him in that batman movie with deathstroke and shit
The Accountant was fantastic
Agree to disagree on his performance as Batman, but yeah the movies sucked
The Accountant was a very pleasant surprise. I had no idea, what to expect, but it was great. My only problem was like many action films, there’s too much violence. Just when you think he’s taken care of the bad guys another one comes out of the woodwork.
I love those videos! Watching them all
“Nobody wants to see a Christmas movie in February. Especially an R-Rated one.” People wanted to see an R-Rated Christmas movie in July, namely July of 1988.
Not to mention Gremlins on June 1984 and Lethal Weapon on March 1987.
@@michaelstrong5383 just curious...did you name those by memory?
@@turtlepowersf Honestly I had to look up the months of when they were released, but I knew that they were released in 1984 and 1987 respectively by memory.
@@michaelstrong5383 still a much better memory than I have.
Iron Man 3 literally takes place on Christmas and it came out in May
Gotta say, he was a good Batman. Really liked what he did with it and how it fit the portrayal of a more mature Bruce Wayne. Also, the fights, come one, those were awesome
I liked him as Cartman’s hand’s boyfriend
He was the best Batman/Bruce Wayne. Purely based on performance. It's even more obvious in the Directors Cuts. Hope he gives it one more go.
like all the guys waiting for him to turn to face them ? ;)
like Batman using firearms ?
never seen weaker fight scenes, sry
And: more mature... than the previous one ? Are you kidding ??? :D
Can we get one of these on Mathew Lillard?
Hahaha yes!

you get all poetic in these bio reviews... biorevs? perhaps? ... i did a back-to-back jim carrey/ben affleck... these should be rerun classics on the history channel. great work man!
I actually thought the extended version of Batman V Superman was good.
If he would have stopped shooting bad guys with machine guns, and acted in front of a set other than a green screen, Ben Affleck's Batman would have been one of the best incarnations of the character ever
it’s a bad movie
Nah. It's just same bad stuff just longer
this excuse is getting old and sometimes it kinda sounds like a joke because I watched the Director's Cut first then I watched the Theatrical Cut and it just the same lol, the Director's Cut just patched some plot holes but still the movie is still the same
This movie is much better than many marvel movies but it is the mind of the critics who will not be able to appreciate any thing afflek would do.
Ben Affleck will always be my Daredevil. I think its an underrated gem.
@narstyr I agree. Director's Cut 8/10, Theatrical Cut 6/10.
I dont comment on CZcams usually but this was VERY well done. Thank you.
well done video.... excellent really
Loved Ben as Batman. I was one his few supporters for the role
Amy RYAN not Amy Smart. That wasn't smart of you

Changing Lanes and Gone Girl are two great flicks!
The Town and Gone Baby Gone are easily 2 of my favorite movies.
"Paycheck" is awesome!
Exaclty. Was a decent fun flick. Not bad as everyone says
There’s a scene in “The Town” where Ben Affleck is actually watching the movie “Heat”.
It’s a movie intended to remind you of “Heat”. Kind of an homage to put it in more snobbish terms ;)

I can’t believe you haven’t seen The Accountant!!!! I wish there was a sequel!!!
Another great Actor Lifestory. Great watch - Cheers! :D And yeah Ben Affleck is awesome! :-)
As a struggling alcoholic fighting depression i support Ben Affleck in every way. He truly is a warrior and a great actor and film maker !!!
@steve hazard he was in weinsteins red flag list, how could they be friends?

Hello, Fellow! Well said, and isn't it sadly interesting how after all these decades of proven science and information super-highways that our disease is still equated to mere weakness? Meanwhile entire sports affiliations wear special colored socks in support for similar and UNWANTED diseases. A prayer for us who still struggle/suffer and also for those too ignorant to understand (one of the latter's spokes-persons is in the comment feed with us: @Jules Winnfield, I might even suspect Jules is fighting/hiding from what we found the STRENGHTH to admit and sought help to conquer).

@@giantfisher Honestly I appreciate your comment and support. Thank you so much for that ! It's easy for people to judge which is many dot it but the one's who are fighting the good fight will encourage each other. Thank you for those kind words !
His best performances are Hollywoodland & The way back 2020, they are so great and underrated but I think also the movies at 17:19-17:27 are some of his finest performances. Also Jersey Girl was a cute movie
Hollyoodland doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves
The Accountant is his second best movie since Goodwill. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE especially if you’re gonna do a doc like this!!!
The Accountant you shoud watch,it was few years ago and still remember that movie it means, that it was worthy to store it in my memory =)
Lovely piece. The Accountant is in my overal top 10 favourites. Also, the Netflix movie isn't so bad. It's a sad story, but very well presented. The acting is killer. Give it a go as well.
I remember reading the reason why Affleck directing the Justice League never happened was because the script for it at the time was so bad that no director, Affleck (who I think was promoting Argo at the time) included, wanted to touch it with a ten foot pole. The script had been so bad WB had no choice but throw it in the garbage and go back to the drawing with DCEU.
I totally forgot about Dogma, have got to get my hands on that movie.
The Accountant and Batman series are my favorites.
The Accountant was awesome.
Watch "the accountant". It's /really/ good, surprisingly so considering some of his other misses. Apart from the last 5 minutes. But until then, it's fantastic.
The Punisher Vs Batman guest starring Commisioner Gordon
I quite enjoyed it
Especially his home defense system😂
Watching The Accountant all I see is young Bruce Wayne before putting the mask on :)
Underrated movie
man , im still waiting for u to make that kinda of crasy video abt David fincher the cohen brothers and PTA
The way back was so awesome very touching
I think it’s because Matt Damon refused to be his bottom anymore 😂
How do all these actors as they age have the same hairline as in their 20's. Not all of them can have these perfect hair genetics can they?
When you're that much of a celebrity, people let you do it...take their genetics, so you look better on screen.
Affleck has had a toupe for ages. A really good one. He may have transplanted the hairline and put a rug behind it at some point.
cavill is different
@@empty19941
How is he different?
they have money. also, bad hair is genetic, so if you have a receding hair line there's not much you can do unless you have money.
this was great
I like the The accountant . I heard a second one is in the works??
Before judging BVS, everyone should watch the Ultimate Cut. That is the cut audience deserved to watch in theaters.
It still sucked
Just sucked less
I mean the biggest face off in comic book history still ended with "why did you say that name?!"
Old School Uncensored you misunderstand That scene. He didn’t stop cause Clark said his mother’s name. He stopped because in that moment he realized Superman is human. That’s his realization Superman has relationships and people he cares about. Also he can’t go on after he utters Martha in his most vulnerable state. That would make Batman a cold blooded murderer. Which he is not.
@@syed123911 I didn't misunderstand anything
They ended the most epic fight (and it was really good up until that point) with him screaming like a bitch because Superman said his mothers name
It was a bullshit cop out
Especially considering how the original fight went
Hell if Dooomsday had attacked instead it would've been a hundred times better
Old School Uncensored Nah you misunderstood it and followed the crowd like a sheep just because your weak mind wasn’t spoon fed a movie with quips and jokes to keep you awake throughout the whole movie.
Not your average Bear 😂😂😂💪🙏
Dude just watch the Accountant it's one of his latest best movies .... trust me!
You should totaly see the Accountant - it's amazing!
Ben's journey and triumph is testament to how some of us need to carve our own paths. There may not be one laid for you when you are out there searching for your own place in the world. And you may find yourself in a slump for years due to taking the easier route of landing gigs that someone else puts together for you. Until you are willing and able to take the reins and put yourself into the difficult role of a leader, you may never find your perfect fit.
I liked his Daredevil at the time. I don’t think it was THAT bad.
chazIII7III bullseye was pretty epic ngl
In my opinion, it fits that character, Daredevil shouldn't have a perfect, polished movie. It wouldn't be right.
I enjoyed Daredevil.
Likewise, i really enjoyed it. Affleck's performance as a blind sad orphan was pretty believable to me. Also colin farrel as bull's eye was scary. Perhaps duncan didn't look like the king pen we know but he was great as the muscular boss.
I don't know why people hate it.
Gregory peck The guns of navarone 1961 with Anthony Quinn David Niven sir Anthony Quayle Richard Harris James Robertson justice
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms.
I thought I was one of the few who actually liked that movie, despite its flaws! 😂 I loved Ben in that movie!
Is there a video where you talk about the Snyder cut? It redeemed things imo.
Made it here early yesssssss
The accountant was excellent!
Only rich people get help, the rest of us end up on the streets or dead in a gutter.
Sad, but true.
🥃 has always had fun but it is so much more to be seen as you know that the way they have it for their music 🎼 has been an awesome ride!
the accountant and fargo. 2 of his best movies ^^
Reindeer games he did because he wanted to understand directing and shadowed John Frankinheimer during the making of the film.
@Steve Jones I didn't know that.
I loved Reindeer Games. You’re definitely right, the director’s cut is the best way to experience it especially for the first viewing!
"I just wanted to watch a bad film and have a good time" :-D
Live by night was really good and the full version of Batman vs Superman a very entertaining take on Batman
nice video. I kinda like Ben Affleck too. But I actually liked his batman roles, he's pretty dark and gritty. He and Christian Bale played the best batmans
Bahahahahaha, i used to work at USARIEM in Natick. I worked in Exercise Physiology
Alcohol happened. Also self indulgence and an inflated idea of his talents.
Flora Posteschild A fair bit of of wokeness plays a role.
Flora Posteschild Totally agree… His talent versus ego scale was way off
😁😁😁
Leaving a Thumbs Up for Phantoms, because Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms
Which is the background music used at 21:17
I'd love the inside story on the writing of Good Will Hunting - there's no way they wrote that shit
Night people 1954 with Broderick Crawford
@Luis Collado I wasn't aware that they had written any other movie scripts. A Google search says that they've only written good will hunting as of this point. The rumor was that they wrote good will hunting about a super smart action hero type, but someone basically rewrote it completely, and was uncredited. I always heard it was William Goldman, but he denies it.
My favorite Batman is without a doubt Ben Affleck. He did an amazing job and he was the best part of those 2 movies. And yes i loved BVS, the directors cut with 3h. Amazing movie
They shit all over Frank Millers work
Lol
The chin comments you made were very funny about the Batman portion.
I guess I'm more lenient when it comes to movies. I liked Aflecks DD. But Elektra... ug.
Daredevil was a good movie, the R rated director's cut anyway. The version in theaters was crap.
I enjoyed it immensely. You can see the chemistry between him and Jennifer Garner
@R M have you seen it recently? The acting isn't great, the characters are uninteresting, the music choices are... interesting at best, the plot is super basic... So yeah, I agree, it's not the worst superhero movie I've ever seen but it's not really good
@R M that's not an excuse, Daredevil came out in 2003. Which means that Marvel already released Spider-Man, Blade, X-Men... This movie was not good, and it probably seems worse now that it's almost 20 years old, but when you watch X-Men or Spider-Man, those movies are visually old but the scenario and the acting are still good because it already was at the time. That is not the case with Daredevil.
He even speaks english
Sort of. He speaks Amerikan.
I am getting some flashback feelings from the license free background music...
that batman vs superman was really good!
Why is "Aquaman" considered such a great film whilst "The Justice League" is derided? Justice League is a far superior movie in my opinion. Whilst IAquaman is just a big, sloppy CHI ridden mess. Ben Affleck was fantastic as Batman! Really good.
You can watch videos on why it was so bad (you can only type so much with 1 hand).
1) CGI
When it comes to CGI, Aquaman is definitely far superior.... JL had very noticeable green screens. I almost forgot the horrible mustache removal. There was this one scene where he talks to Lois and smiles.... That was terrifying.
2) Writing
The writing was hot garbage imo. I liked Batfleck and wanted to see more of him, but in the 2 movies that he was in, he wasn't written like he deserved. If you have watched the DCAU shows, or the animated movies, or have read the comics, then you would for sure understand how bad the writing was. Just look at how batman was written in JL. He was literally there, just to get shit thrown into his face. He said things that batman wouldn't say, like the one where he argues with wonder woman. Also, if batman wants to do something, he would do it, he wouldn't ask others. Batman is the mortal on the team of immortals that even they respect him and follow him. Also, batman is a lil bit sassy, but he doesn't make jokes, especially in the middle of a fight. Moving on to Flash. This flash was supposed to be Barry Allen, but he behaves more like Wally West. He was severely underpowered. Like seriously, he kept tripping over and over again.
The character introductions were rushed. Every character was underpowered.
I don't remember much from the movie, like it was soo damn forgettable.
Still a underrated actor.
Ben Affleck mad respect!
Thank you for pointing out that in the daredevil era, they did not know what to do with a comic book character.
ben affleck is worst actor
An Accountant II would be awesome.
I liked reindeer games lol
I mean Charlize Theron was shirtless in it. How can you not like it
DEFINITELY watch the directors cut if you are watching it for the first time. If you take it for what it is (a campy action movie), it’s thoroughly enjoyable! Watch for the Ashton Kutcher cameo! 😉
Thank YOU!!
Amy Ryan, guy. Amy Smart is also great, but that was Amy Ryan.
