  • Very basic video this month. I've just bought a couple of set squares, about time some would say, and am trying to get my woodworking and cutting skills up to speed in preparation for next month's project.

Although the jigsaw is fairly easy to control and can give good results if you are careful, the blade tends to wobble around at it's far end. So on thicker pieces of wood you can end up with the join being neat in one direction but being very out of square in the other direction. The circular saw's blade has a lot less flex or wobble and so gives a neater cut.

Thanks for the advice. What you say makes sense. Also, the noises you could occasionally hear in the background were from someone using a really smart portable table circular saw (is that what they are called?). That was an impressive bit of kit and made really nice square cuts. If I do a lot more woodwork, I will need one of those. Plus a pillar drill, bandsaw, lathe.... this could get expensive

I bought a similar combination square recently out of an ambition to make slightly less wonky stuff. I found the square itself was very far from square, and there are some videos out there of how to true them up, basically by filing the metal lugs that the ruler rides on in the slot.
At the same time, I got a cheap (£7) block plane which is something I'd never used before, and it's great. I made a plywood box and used that to get the edges flush. It's something I wish I'd bought ages ago - now I'm looking to get a slightly less agricultural one

Interesting. It's good to hear that someone else is working towards making stuff which isn't quite so wonky. I get the point about the cheap tools. Maybe I should upgrade... I think I chose pretty much the cheapest combination square I saw on Amazon - not such a good idea, probably.

My Butler is supposed to do that, but he's off on his yacht at the moment. I think I pay him too much ;)
      Point taken.

At least you can play the ‘One Note Samba’ now…… I can show you how if you get stuck 😊
Agree with the idea of ‘doing thing’s properly’, but try as I might and using set squares, spirit levels etc my aspirations still fall short of reality, I mean, how hard can it be to get one 45deg cut to line up with another 45deg to make a right angle…. I’ll tell you…. bloody impossible if you’re me ! TG for Mr West and his amazing products 🤭
Love your films Paul, thanks for posting.
      Cheers,
      Richard,
PS: don’t forget you’ve still got a poorly boat somewhere in the garden 😢

@@Scruffy1000 Boat will be a lot more poorly if I don't make sure that the new holding tank doesn't leak.
If I pressure test the HDPE Welded tank and it does leak, then be assured, I will be using Mr West's products.
