  • I need both a workbench and a router table for upcoming projects, but not both at the same time. So, here is me making a simple, sturdy and small bench/table/thing.
Inspiration was from the Proper DIY workbench video

Yes, don't tell Lucy that it's all done in the editing. She thinks she's a wizard now as well as a mermaid.

    Hi,
Don’t do yourself down on getting everything 100% Paul, this and the stool are bloody excellent, well thought out and put together. It’s great to see your confidence and woodworking skills growing and it all bodes well for making the galley and other fittings on Serenity.
Yher, you did a ‘proper job’ ! and it looks good 👍
    All the best,
    Richard.

The more I do it, the better it gets. And as a bonus, I'm actually starting to enjoy it. I never really used to enjoy woodworking at all.
Couple more projects and I should be ready for the galley.
      Cheers, Paul

Lucy is absolutely lovely. Seeing the two of you working together makes me almost regret not having any children of my own.
Do have one question though. Are you sure that you built this workbench sturdy enough?
Speaking of humor, I will have to remember the line about how a drunk giraffe on a rollercoaster with a rusty hacksaw blade.could.mak a straighter cut -but I'm not saying that it is awful...
I am delighted that you seem to be enjoying what you are doing very much no matter what it is or how very nearly it is about sailing or not. As long as you are on the path to where you are going and the destination is somewhere ahead it is nice when each footstep along the way brings you joy.

Hmmh. You may have a point. Maybe I should add some cross bracing ;) The one I used for inspiration was twice as big in each direction. It was just easier to stick to using 2x4's.
The idea of this is to get to a point where I feel confident enough not to mess up the next few internal projects. It is many years (40+) when I last did any 'proper' woodworking, and that was all with hand tools. This is turning out to be quite enjoyable.
I'm hoping to get Lucy more involved when she has the time. She is quite keen to get out and sail Serenity.
      Cheers, Paul

For your miter sled, could you glue some nylon or teflon strips to the cheap metal guide to tighten it up in the channel on the saw table?

Yes, I've seen people do that. Some can get away with a layer or two of duct tape. Big problem with the Rage 5 S is that there are actually two lots of tracks which are both loose. As well as the actual cross cut/mitre thing, that is mounted onto its own 'sled'' with two loose runners Weird.
I might just get some Delrin (same as rudder bearing material) and cut a few new tracks once I get the router table up and running.
It's a shame, because otherwise it's an excellent saw.
      Cheers, Paul
