  • Before I get started on a few 'quality critical' projects (Galley and Holding Tank), I need to get in a bit of practise. My woodworking to date has not been great. This is an easy project, but one that needs a fair bit of precision and care.
It went better than expected. Plus I got to play with my new toy - a Table Saw

Well done Paul, I like that you took the trouble to laminate a nice top to your stool. It was a good exercise to test the table saw and you have something practical to show for it.

I saw the 'zigzag/chevron' thing ages ago and wanted to try it. It does take a few passes and glue ups. But to be honest, the table saw makes it really easy.
I spent ages setting up the table saw. I didn't cover that aspect as there are loads of videos on CZcams. But once everything is really squared up properly it is amazing to be able to replicate cuts accurately.
      Cheers, Paul

When I saw all the holes I wondered if it was going to double as a cribbage board! CHEERS from Canadian westcoast!

For a first go at something like that I think you did a great job, compound angles are really tricky. I'm going to be sharing this with my brother in Chelmsford who is a cabinet maker/carpenter. Maybe he can give you some tips!
By the way, the Japanese have a saying "Wabi Sabi" (sp?) which means "Beauty through imperfection". Your stool is just that!

I seem to remember that craftsmen building cathedrals ensured that they included some sort of imperfection - as only God was allowed to be perfect. In which case, all the Gods (right back to Norse mythology) must be very happy with me indeed.
I am going to make a few mods to the table saw, then build a few jigs and have another go. Once I am happy with my skills/tools, I will crack on with finishing the galley. And, of course, pretty much every angle on a boat is a compound angle. - Usually a compound curve.
      Cheers, Paul

That's a nice stool sample video. I liked the part where you made the butt relief in the top. Attention to detail is not being anal.
