I'm a native papiamento speaker and this language is very similar to ours.🇦🇼🇨🇼🇧🇶
African Diaspora is what causes Cape Verdean Creole, Guinea Bissau Portuguese Creole, Papiamento and many other dialects to be very similar and sometimes almost identical.
Thats right. I’m from Surinam. We speak creole also mixed with dutch potrugese and english. And some mostly ghanian words. (twi)
Indeed! It just so happens that our creoles are very closely related.
Which is why we dedicated a series to them.
Nô Criol Bunitu nam bó ⚡🇬🇼🌹🤴🏽👋🏼
Im cape verdean. Very very similar.
Interesting. Does Cape Verde have different ethnic groups like in Guinea-Bissau? If so, do you know of any?
@@rasaroots6309 basic cape verde was not living before the arrival of the portuguese and thereafter they began to populate with the Portuguese colonists and the African slaves. As Portugal had several base of trade africa of which it imported the slaves, I suppose that yes but on the other hand the ethnic differences are no longer very marked. (Well I think since I'm cape verde but I've never been to cape verde I don't really know.😅)

@@rasaroots6309 there was a Guiné Bissau before cape verde. Their Creole to us feels old, but that's presumptuous of us since they started the language
I can't tell you how happy I am to find some answers about where our people came from in Africa. I am a descendant of the African Diaspora and our people were brought to Curacao in the Caribbean. This will definitly helps me in my reseach of my ancestors. Thnx for sharing this.

Im brazilian, i speak portuguese i understand when he speaks but the writining is so much different!
its cool this
"They" do that for some reason. It's the same with Haitian Creole spelling, which could almost always be spelt according to Standard French spelling -- but, no. Personally, I think it's meant to isolate these languages (and, the people who speak them . . . ?). But, from what? Whether black skin or white skin, the old "paternalism" yet remains.
Yes, in Brazil people speak a very similar creole. It is called the Brazilian creole.
A few people asked about the name of the song. We don't know the name, but we can tell you it's a local Christian song that starts with: "You are Lord, that is your name."
As a portuguese i understand everything instantly. Creole sounds great! Thanks
dopo aver lavorato un anno a Bissau mi ritrovo a capire questo criol portoghese e mi prende nostalgia dell'africa.
Un saluto a tutti quelli di Bissao che ho avuto l'onore di conoscere.
Thank you. We hope you enjoyed your time in Guinea-Bissau.
They dont speak portguese?
PAPIAMENTU/PAPIAMENTO evidently comes from Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, etc. Con ta bai? Ami ta bon. My father's side of the family is from Korsou/Curacao, and when I met someone from guinea-bissau I understood what he was saying.
We are family! West Indians with indigenous Taino and Guinean roots.
When i arrived the Netherlands for the first time i've heard some people talking and i was like wtf....what language is that is that creole from Cape Verde or Guine Bissau?? Hahah i didn t know about papiamento... (im portuguese , with Cape Verdean and Guine Bissau roots)👊🏿
Yes you gotta study history most of the people from curacao and cabo verde have the same ancestors that came from west africa... guinea bissau, gambia, senegal. If you travel i travel you will see the same faces in cura and cabo verde there like cousins. I grew up with people from the antillen in Rdam i always felt a connection with them. Guinea bissau/ antilianos e cabo verdianos lingua a mesme a bo sabe nos e tudo um povo nha amigo si bo cre nos ta papia um manera o otro nos ta compriende agora mi ta bai dormi a te mudrugada ciao
The West Africans are so adept to modifying mother languages into creolized forms as well as performing mastery I'm other linguistic areas outside their own. Guinea B. creole is such a prime example. " Kuma ku bu sta " " nunde ku bu mora " A blend of Iberian and Bantu lexicologies..,..how ingenious.
I'm from Arubaa🇦🇼 we speek papiamento and 20 years ago i met a guy from Africa thats also speek the same i was suprise we speak the same languaege
Born in Sénégal,my roots are in bissao my father used to speak et And he taught a lot.
Oh my god, I was looking for this for years because I forgeting my creole ans very sad about it. I had live in Bubaque for 2 year went I was a teen and I was speaking cery well. Thank you
Im from Cape Verde and I could understand almost everything. Obviously, there are diferences in the accent and also some words but still understandable for us. :D great video
Thanks, Diego. We've heard that there are some differences between the Cape Verdean and Bissau-Guinean creole, but that people speaking Creole from the two countries can easily understand each other.
@@WAVSchools krioulo was derived from cabo verde and later the capeverdeans brougt to bissau city, only in bissau inicially kreole was speak

Hi Renjii, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's very interesting to see such strong similarities. What's fascinating about your comment is that the structures are so similar and the use of the "ku" and "ta" appears to be the same. Very fascinating!
Like many people commented...it's very similar to the language Papiamento. For example "Kantu añu ku bu tene?" is "Cuanto aña bo tin?" in Papiamento.
I love Guinea bissau my Home :)
I speak fluent creole. This language is a mixture of french, Creole and Portuguese. I can understand few words as they are the same with original Creole and french

It is a good idea and very interesting but what about more lessons because I really want to speak the créole of Bissao
I love the language , I am Nigerian but I am very fluent in the language like a native speaker , creole de Jeba 😊
Thanks for your comment. That's very interesting! I looked up papiamentu and (according to Wikipedia) it looks like the language may have been borrowed from Cape Verdean Creole, which is very similar to Guinea-Bissau Creole. Thanks so much for sharing this information!
mmm I don't think it was borrowed in any way ..it was an existing language
That is truly. Guiné Bissau crioulo is coming from Cabo verde. Inicially Capeverdeans emigrated to bissau and Bring crioulo with Them. Capeverdeans are crioulo culturally and etnicaly.
@@joseeduardogomesmoreira7487 It's the other way around. Cape Verde wasn't populated before the Portuguese arrived, taking Guinean/Senegalese settlers and slaves with them (who had already started creating this creole language to communicate amongst themselves).
obrigado pelo video!

Really nice idea to teach possible visitors some basic creol, I like.
Unfortunatly Chris got the some pronunciations repeatedly wrong like the "n'..." which is pronounced without and "e" (not (e)n'...)
But besides that it's a really nice idea, I'm wainting for more.
Greetings from Bissora
kuma ku bu sta, in Portuguese spelling "como que voce sta." = how are you.
In Portuguese spelling " com esta voce" Not sta but esta.
Yes of course, a lot of people understand and speak regular Portuguese.
But especially in rural areas it might be hard to find someone who understands portuguese.
BEFORE THE LANGUAGE PAPIAMENTU MATURED TO IT'S MODERN DAY FORM OUR ANCESTORS SPOKE " GENI" NOW I SUSPECT IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH GUINEA-BISSAU
papiamento means speanking in guinea-bissau creole
Definitely!!
Orgulho pa no kriol
Many people hear a few words they understand and they make the false assumption that they understand most of the language. As a Brazilian I understand a number of the words but do not find Crioulo intelligible at all… maybe 30-40% or less. Also, those sentences were easy, in a normal situation, Crioulo is NOT easy to understand at all. However, it seems that I would be able to learn it more easily than most other languages.
I concur. Obviously speaking a Romance language will speed up the process of learning Guinensi.
And that process would be even faster if you speak Papiamentu or Kabuverdianu.
Anaco2, thanks for your comment! Yes, unfortunately it's the same way in the U.S. -- and perhaps even fewer people there know about Guinea-Bissau. You can find out more about WAVS here: WAVSchools (dot) org.
Which website can I learn bissau creole
@@gambiangirl8459 Thanks for reaching out and watching our video. Unfortunately, we do not know of any websites that teach Guinea-Bissau's Portuguese-based creole.
@@gambiangirl8459 In Guinea-Bissau they speak a Portuguese based creole which is a little different than the creole in Cape Verde. This video goes over some of the basic phrases of the creole used in Guinea-Bissau.
Is there a standard version of Guinea Bissau Creole? How similar are the different dialects of Guinea Bissau Creole?
Hi Alexis, thanks for your question. It's a hard one to answer. There aren't really different dialects of Guinea-Bissau Creole (though it's a little different than the Creole in Cape Verde). However, even within Guinea-Bissau, different regions (especially the capital) like to mix in more Portuguese words.
@@WAVSchools Most people in the capital know fluent portuguese as the government centers there and portuguese is the only official state language but few have portuguese as mother tongue so they use the portuguese based creole to communicate outside Bissau city as the majority of the country is able to communicate.
If you speek criol then v good feeling
is this classes available for bissau residency, i am interested please
Can you translate an english document to upper guinea creole? Its kind of hard to find someone to do a simple job for me.
Recently learned of my ancestry and have been searching for the Creole language that would be spoken by most of the country. I understand that each region has their own dialect. Will this course be beneficial for a specific region or the entire country of Guinea-Bissau?
Hi Marian, that's a good question. Creole is the unifying language in the country, but there are some slight regional differences. Also, some people in the rural areas don't speak Creole at all and only speak their local ethnic language.
West African Vocational Schools my mum Is from guine bissau so I know how to speak it
West African Vocational Schools bu sta drito
Marian each region doesn't have its own dialect. Every city has many different ethnicities and each have their own language but ultimately everyone speaks Portuguese and or creole. Apart from the really rural areas where the people there speak only their specific language or dialect.

Alguém sabe o que é a canção ao fim? 😍
Many Creole speakers in Guinea-Bissau can speak basic Portuguese since the two languages overlap a lot, but only perhaps 10% speak Portuguese fluently. Even though Portuguese is taught in high school, the level of instruction is usually pretty poor.

Because people from Curaçao are descendants of West Africans who created the first Portuguese Creole before being transported to the Caribbean. Search it up! I’m Cape a Verdean and we speak a very similar almost identical Portuguese Creole to this.
We are the same people separated centuries ago and our creolo has evolved slightly. The foundational/structure is still the same.

They can help you form simple phrases and basic grammar. Try it out.
año is not pronounced (and written) with the ñ-sound like in spanish.
more accurate would be "How did you wake up?"
the N in "n'ka ta" or "n'sta" is very short. like stuck to the rest. so not "en'ka ta".
the literal translation for "bianda" is (cooked) rice.
Thanks, Chris. We may not have the pronunciation down quite right in this video.

as far as I recall and I could be very wrong;;;papiementu was brought to the Islands by African people who were [unfortunately]sold into slavery. They retained and nurtured their language not only because it was their identity but for the Shon [ owner] not to understand. so are we looking at Portugese roots or pure African ?? I love and speak papiamentu it is rich and expressive
correct..the foreign influences came WAY after papiamentu existed . so the foreign influences added extra words or pronounciation and spelling. My spelling was phonetically English because of my English background :) so telefon would be telephon in my spelling . I love the language...it might have changed of course as time went by but it is rich..the only comment I have, is that even the most educated writers, rarely use understandable punctuation so the sentence seems to go on forever and needs to be read a few times pa komprond'ele bon ... tabata leuk di por a discuti un tiki ku bo...pas'un dushi atarde

So this is the language the slaves brought to Curacao where it got influenced by Spanish?
An early variant of this. But yes.

Creole is basically Portuguese + the amazing imagination of my people. Portuguese was broken dwn by every single portuguese colony, but creole got to the point where it became a new language. It could be an official language rather than just being considered a dialect, as it meets all d criterias.
Is this the colonizers language or is it the native language of the black people there?
It is a kreol. The european language mixes with native dialects and form a new dialect. This is Bissau Kreol our "lingua franca".
