“Go vegan!” and “It’s not food, it’s violence!” are two rallying cries that animal welfare activists have been chanting for years. But for activist and vegan Matt Ball, the purist ideologies espoused in those mantras might actually work against the goal of reducing and ultimately ending animal slaughter.
Despite the animal advocacy from vegan and animal welfare groups, consumption of meat has grown in the United States from 183 pounds of red meat and poultry per capita in 1975 - the year Peter Singer’s seminal Animal Liberation was published - to an estimated 217.8 pounds this year.
Making matters worse, more than 80 percent of people who adopt a vegetarian (let alone vegan) diet ultimately go back to eating meat. According to Ball, vegetarians go back to their meat-eating ways in part because “they can't stand the pressure to maintain a pure diet.”
Although he is sympathetic to vegan and traditional animal welfare activism, Ball believes the time has come for activists to reconsider their tactics. That’s why in early 2014, he co-founded a new organization called One Step for Animals. Their goal is not to get individuals to take on any given lifestyle or diet, but rather to convince as many people as possible to simply stop eating chicken.

Because this information is so inaccurate you feel like smacking yourself in the face. Ruminant animals like Cow produce greenhouse gases while processing their meal and need so much water and grazing land during their lifetime. I think there is an article on how Amazonian rain forests are being cut down in size drastically just to raise beef cattle. My information is little vague but I am sure you can find them on the internet.

      I think it makes sense.
I'm a buddhist and I believe that all lives are sacred, but also that I need to eat to survive, so 2 things are recommended:
      1) Eat larger animals. A shrimp cocktail will kill many lives, while a lot of people can feed from the one life of a cow
      2) Be conscious and compassionate about my choices. Just because I'm eating an animal doesn't mean that I have to be careless about it. Be thankful for the food on your table and don't waste.
There is a point about greenhouse gases and land, but it would be a marginal increase. We can get better at that.

Feed conversion ratio on chicken is orders of magnitude better than beef. Beef is something like 7-1, which means 7 pounds in to 1 pound out. Feed conversion on chickens is something like 1.75-1. Stopping eating chickens is about the worst advice you can give. Instead focus on reducing consumption amounts. Eating much less much higher quality (and more expensive) meat. Buy small amounts of grass finished beef, pork, and chicken and make the meal focus less on the meat and more on the "side" foods. Quality over quantity.

Seriously Vox, this video is a massive stain on your channel/reputation. The premise that people should just not eat chicken, ignores every other reason people don't want to eat meat, and implies that simply the number of animal lives is important or what people care about.
Then almost all the statistics and inferences in this are misleading, out-dated, or wrong. The statistics about how many vegans/vegetarians currently exist in the US is almost a decade old. The graph shown at the end CLEARLY shows a change in the trend right before he says "we've been failures at this so far". But I guess he's just going to ignore that, and all the other indicators that show an increase in vegetarian/vegan specific products, acceptance, and culture.

@J - Surprisingly, it is. Methane is much more powerful than CO2, and huge amounts of crops have to be grown to feed cattle (on a per-pound-of-meat basis relative to something like chicken). Cattle are also the main reason why there is so much destruction of the rain forest in the Amazon in South America.

    • @Maplesurps
      @Maplesurps Před 7 lety +19

Yes, methane is around 20x worse than co2, being that cows produce methane. The problem is that no major websites dont say anything about the cattle industry due to the money it makes. Cattle causes most rainforest and habitat destruction, and takes around 660 gallons of water for a single pound of beef. You should watch the documentary "cowspiracy".

This is an excellent point. About ten years ago, Hugh Fernley Whittingstall (a meat eater) launched a televised campaign against factory farming in the UK. Almost overnight, supermarkets began making a very concerted effort to remove battery eggs and promote free range chicken. In a culture that eats a lot of meat such as the UK, you simply aren't going to convince people to go vegetarian, far less vegan (dairy products also make up a big portion of the British diet). This is exacerbated by the aggression with which many vegans put their point across. You're never going to stop people eating meat altogether when that's what they've grown up with but you can make people think about where their meat is coming from and mitigate the levels of suffering involved in the process, even if that makes animal products a wee bit more expensive.

Saving animal lives is very important, but deciding to only eat beef and pork will lead to an increase in the average person's carbon footprint. As consumers we must have our priorities straight, save chickens or save the earth. Beef takes 28 times the land and 11 more times the water than chickens. The production of beef releases 5 times the amount of greenhouse gasses that it takes to produce chickens. If you are trying to change your consumer habits, choosing to stop eating beef will lead to a much better outcome than choosing beef over chickens. Even Vox made an article (link below) about decreasing an individual's carbon footprint by decreasing the consumption of meats where it states "Cows, in turn, have a larger impact than pigs or chickens." This is one of the most ridiculous ideas that I have heard as it does not take into consideration the broader environmental impacts that it would lead to.

The argument was that humans will get their daily water in take in other forms such as in food and water in coffee etc. to stay hydrated. Meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be pure water that should account for the 8 glasses a day. One conclusion of a particular research that sampled 2 groups of people in a span of 2 decades i think, with one group asked to consistently drink 8 glasses of water a day, while the other just normally what they'd consume on a regular basis, states that it did not make the people who drank 8 glasses of water a day necessarily healthier and live longer. :)

I spent three years arguing daily with a hardcore vegetarian, and probably 100s of hours researching the cost of husbandry and processing. Cows/cattle are immensely inefficient and last time I looked it up took 6 to 8 times the amount of water per pound per year and 4-ish times amount of food per year to feed, compared to chickens and pigs. Humans aren't even natural, we sacrificed so much of muscles that we're so weak compared to other animals. We evolved our brains not to be weak , but to be smart and take advantage of what we have. So thats why we kill bigger mammals, because we're smart and know how to make stuff for our advantage, not to be weak and hide from bigger animals.

    • @NatureFirstVeganFirst

Hi im just a guy Our intelligence was the compensation for our physical weakness. We became smart so that we could get ourselves out of trouble -- meaning that we don't get killed and eaten, to survive. Being able to outsmart bigger or smaller animals or even hostile environments does not give us the prerogative or licence to dominate nature. If we are indeed intelligent, we will know that we are not meant to be this and remember that we were once like them too. Furthermore, the attitude of "taking advantage of what we have" without having any scruples or moral compass to set boundaries is what is ruining the planet. Capitalists in America alone, for example, are setting the nefarious standards of maximizing profit regardless of whether or not they bring any harm. They do not consider if their customers are further driven into poverty or sickness by their trade, or if deforestation to build or to plant will render homeless other species or make others extinct, or if the lives they raise to slaughter deserve to have a say in the matter.

The approach he advocates is meant to try to reduce the amount of suffering in the world, while recognizing the reality that most people don't see a veg diet as feasible right now.

Please do not do this. I am not sure what to call it, but for the last four years I have not eaten mammals (no red meat). I work out a lot so I did not want to cut meat from my diet entirely, but there are many reasons why red meat in particular should be avoided. Here are 5 good reason why this video could not be more wrong:
    1) Every pound of beef has a much higher carbon footprint than chicken or fish (or reptile if you are weird).
    2) The amount of human consumable plant food that we use to feed mammals could literally end world hunger if reallocated. Though this would be a huge distribution challenge, ending world hunger is worth the effort.
    3) Mammal brains are extremely similar to our own. Birds still possess reptilian type brains meaning they lack certain lobes that all mammals have. While I still have some moral dilemma eating anything with consciousness, I feel that non-mammals are measurably less conscious (please do not take this as any kind of justification for the horrible and inhumane practices of chicken farming. That must be fixed).
    4) Red meat is surprisingly bad for you. The results of The China Study, the largest study on the human diet ever conducted, showed many strong indicators that red meat in particular is perilous to your health. Watch the documentary Forks Over Knives for more details.
    5) Beef subsidies in the US are ridiculous. There is wayyy too much government money going towards beef and it has created an environment where a cheeseburger at McDonalds is cheaper than a clean plant-based meal from the supermarket. The real cost of the burger is much more, but the extensive subsides make it cheaper. This causes the poorest and most vulnerable segments of our population to choose unhealthy foods out of economic necessity, and leads to unmeasurable health costs down the road. Subsidies should be reallocated to healthy foods that lead to a healthy public. Sadly this is not the case (thanks beef lobbyists).
I love beef. A steak with sautéed mushrooms is my favorite meal in the world, but because of the environmental, humanitarian, and economic implications of eating beef I will never have a steak again. I don't think it would be right for Vox to take this down, but a video that challenges this perspective is absolutely necessary.

Most of your points hit the nail on the head (especially your 5th point), but even as a vegan/vegetarian, you can still make "gains" without eating meat because of the vast array of plant protein found in nuts, legumes, seeds, and leafy green veggies that don't come with the nasty baggage of meats and animal products, like high concentrations of cholesterol, unhealthy fats, and carcinogenic elements, and also provide the most healthy, cleansing source of numerous essential vitamins and minerals; just look at Torre Washington, Jordan David (aka, ConsciousMuscle), Jimmy Nas, etc.; all ripped, vegan body builders! Also, less consciousness in an animal shouldn't dictate how much respect they deserve as a sentient being who simply wants to live and not be treated poorly (and from a ethical perspective, not be objectified as commoditized property). I am a new vegan myself but I was in my own dilemma of going vegan for years. I was someone that once claimed that I couldn't-- no, wouldn't live without sushi, shrimp, and chicken, my favorite animal foods. But after researching, especially seeing grueling animal cruelty videos, I decided to get consistent with my morals and ethical stances and transitioned to veganism slowly as a poultry-pescatarian while simultaneously being meticulous in evaluating what I really prioritized in the foods I was no longer eating (their plant based seasonings, sauces, breading, toppings and actually cooking the flesh) and why I was ditching them in the first place (initially just ethical reasons; animal cruelty, and my immense love for all animals, even the ugly ones lol. Now for environmental, health, ethical, and moral reasons). I believe many of your points will resonate far more logically and sensibly to vegans/vegetarians and meat lovers alike when it comes to practicality, especially in the comments of such a flawed video, short sighted video. Thank you for doing your best in not contributing to immense global suffering of animal agriculture! Have a great day : )

One of the challenge to vegetarianism is fear of being seen as a weirdo, to be not invited to events and become an outsider. It doesn't matter that not eating animal is right, the problem is that it's not cool, it's not socially accepted.
Another problem is that sometimes, a behavior is a group's identity, e.g. a group of friend's commonality is that they all like to gamble, or a family always like to gossip about their neighbor at the dinner table), and if a behavior or addiction is removed from them, they won't know what to talk about with each other anymore, they will have less in common, so that triggers another fear

+Zack Toor Cows are not classified as carbon neutral. Land must be cleared to make room for these big animals, and clearing trees from an area does not make animal husbandry carbon neutral since less plants will be in the area to uptake the carbon. I don't think CO2 is the greatest emission concern of livestock rearing. Methane has a greater warming potential than CO2 does, and cows release far more than chickens do. Methane's warming potential is 72 times greater than CO2. Although methane lasts much shorter than CO2 does, the EPA adjusts its potency is 25 times worse than CO2.

I had this concept a long time before I heard this video. Beef has a much more of a meat taste than chicken or fish so I can go longer without eating meat. I worked out that I eat 300g of free range grass fed beef a week (this is an over estimation). I have a very small amount 1 or 2 times a week. This equals 15kg of meat a year. This is not even one animal compared to about 10 or more chickens if I was only eating chickens. Furthermore, in Australia, cattle are treated better than any other animal and the least likely to be factory farmed. I have given up milk and eggs. I know I cause less cruelty than if I was a standard vegetarian who ate milk and eggs but no meat. I find this diet very easy to stick to. It has been so much easier to gradually reduce my meat intake than falling on and off in veganism. Even if people just replaced the chicken they ate with beef- yes beef production would rise, but less factory farming and less lives would be lost. When you cant talk your friends into going vegan, encouraging them to always at least choose beef instead of chicken or pork will always result in LESS suffering which is better than nothing. This also increases awareness- people think about their food more- it is more likely to lead to someone going vegan.

Chickens are each about 3 pounds of meat, so you'd have to eat several hundred chickens to equal 1 single cow. That's why it saves hundreds of lives overall since you're likely to eat the same total pounds of meat regardless of type of meat. You could also eat male sheep as an alternative and they make great natural lawnmowers too.

But you cannot expect that everyone will do it for the same reasons. So I think the part of making people understand that they can enjoy food that is cruelty free is an important part in making the world a better place. It's a transformation. Even if we cannot persuade more people into being vegans, even the reduction of the average meat consumption per capita is already a huge step and from my experience a more successful strategy than shaming people for their ethics for not being fully vegan.

We eat grains and plant foods to supplement our meat diet. Over the years were slightly shifting to eating meat just to supplement our grains and plant food diets.
I believe its more of a cultural habit as he said. And he's right, imposing your ideals on others just makes it worse and increases people's defensive behavior.
Setting up huge expectations is worse cause foodies will just back down.
Cutting down on meat and offering a substitute is probably the best solution. I recently came to realise that I eat more grains than meat...something like 2 meals a month. And I don't do it intentionally it just happens, why? I grew up in a Kenyan household and my cultural cuisines is mostly veggies and grains because my tribe's cuisines are just similar.
I'm not vegetarian, vegan etc. I don't particularly like the idea of animals being mistreated but the simple fact is...that's an empathy question. And it's harder to condition people's habits around empathy. Its delusional to think that its going to just happen once.
    And there's also another dilemma.
Let's imagine a society which has completely turned vegan. What happens to the domesticated animals? Will they be returned to the wild? Will they be integrated as pets? Will the remaining ones be extinguished? As much as we want to deny it, humans domesticated animals to be subservient to us. It will be even harder to find their purposeful value other than the ones we've ingrained in our society and economic ventures. Someone should really look into this.
If we just make the habit of cutting down on our consumption by the end of the day an animals life will be saved. Isn't that the goal?

If you’re going to eat meat, go with chicken. Better yet try eggs, which take 395 gal./lb., or plant based protein. For dairy products, cheese and butter take more than milk at 381 gal./lb. and 665 gal./lb. respectively. Milk by itself uses only 122 gallons of water per pound." www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/13/food-water-footprint_n_5952862.html

peaches Yes I have. It's not good but it's no where near as concerning as the environmental impact of animal agriculture. I am a vegetarian (basically vegan but eat dairy or eggs occasionally) because I understand the incredible amount of resources animal ag uses. The amount of land and water it needs. It's CO2 and CH4 output. It's contribution to climate change, deforestation, species destruction, and water pollution. These issues far outweigh the "suffering" of any individual bird or cow. And no, Salty Pasta, I'm not trying to be edgy. I said this because I also know that chicken is a far less detrimental meat to raise in terms of the things I mentioned above. Beef loses in every area, land, water, CO2, etc. per calorie. And as far as factory farming goes, it is more efficient than alternative farming in all above categories. If animal ag must exist, it should be mostly in factory farming for that reason anyway.

As an economic student, the idea of not eating meat to save the planet is folly.Plants and other non-meat products cost more to produce, taking up a higher portion of the factors of production (eg land, labour, capital) while having a high price elasticity of demand and supply. The carbon footprint of produce is also higher. In some places of the world, where produce cannot be grown, they have to be flown or shipped in.Lastly, the chemicals used in farming is worse then manure from a cow, doing more damage.(In addition, going organic is worse for the planet since you are producing goods at the worst possible efficiency, wasting resources at the same time) There is a reason meat is cheap.Meat can be produced in more places in the world, meaning less carbon footprint moving it around.

    • @XDCherylLi
      @XDCherylLi Před 7 lety +14

Yeah sorry, just because you threw in some high-school level economics jargon, doesn't make it true. "Plants cost more to produce." Don't you know animals eat plants? And assuming you're in high school and take biology, you'd know that every step up the food chain results in an estimated 90% of energy lost during transfer. This means it requires 10x the energy to produce a portion of meat that would provide the same energy as a portion of plant food.

What about the fact that cattle produce more greenhouse gases than chickens? Chickens are also more efficient in creating meat, meaning your feed them less for more meat resulting in less land needed for cash crops that humans aren't eating. I agree that people should be encouraged to lower meat consumption but I don't think that cutting out poultry is the best response.
