Not to burst your bubble, but Spiders have insane reaction speed, and honestly, the superior senses. They're just not so smart, and not as strong. Since they're smaller, they actually process things faster. If the spider was a venomous, or aggressive one, like the Brazilian wanderin' spider, it'd actually charge the cat, climb up and inflict severap bites if the cat doesn't scamper away. *ONE* of their bites is enough to kill you or me in about 30 minutes if left untreated. Say goodbye to your cat, he only has about 20 minutes to live.
Of course and it is irresponsible to leave your cat with a spider that could cause the cat an injury from a bite or venom, personally I would of scooped the spider up and put it outside, then got a toy to play with the cat.

Both are amazing creatures. I had cats for many years and a tarantula for 17 (females can live 25 years). The more you learn about spiders, the less fear you have of them...they are really quite remarkable. One even lives under water...the diving bell spider.
