Well, even people who love Frontiers kinda have to admit it's got that Sonic curse of having something wrong with it, despite its highs. Great bosses, some innovative gameplay, fantastic music, and it can be pretty sometimes... But lacking in visual variety, story falls apart near the end, and they didn't even have the budget to create a proper final boss.
DLC has the chance to elevate it further, but even though the base game is good, Odyssey is a more complete and polished experience.

When it comes to Zelda companions, I've always liked Tatl. She's basically Navi with attitude. She doesn't interject as often with that "Hey! Listen!" thing, but she basically just reminds the player of what their main goal is after travelling back in time. Unlike Navi, she has motivation. She starts off as your bully, but becomes a reluctant ally once separated from her brother. Like Navi, she'll give descriptions of creatures targeted, but she often has this attitude like, "What? @Purple Lover C I think it's because this is the first time we've...well, *had* a very significant amount of new Zelda releases on *one* console.
Before, they were split between home and handheld. So while we ended up getting one every 1-3 years, they were often vastly different and on completely different hardware.
I mean, the 3DS, which has perhaps the most behind the Switch, only ever got five across it's entire life, discounting VC and Backwards Compatibility. And one of those was Tri-Force Heroes, so does that really count?
Meanwhile, the Switch has BOTW, LAR, SSHD, COH, HWDE, HWAOC, and TOTK is coming in two months.
That's seven, not counting things like NSO.
But if you put the Wii U and 3DS libraries together, you get eight, which is much more in line with the Switch's lineup.
I don't think the *frequency* of releases has changed much, if at all, but it feels like there's more because they're all in one place.

I liked her interactions with Linebeck and how she is perhaps the least annoying fair in the series, but there isn't much of anything to say about her. I do like the idea of 3 fairies representing power, wisdom, and courage, but it feels weirdly misplaced when there isn't much more of a thematic relevance to the game's story in a game where the triforce doesn't make an appearance. I like how she guides Link, that's a cool addition that works for a game like PH and is better than the generic sparkles that she was replaced with in ST.

Mario 64- by modern standards controls/motion is terrible which is bad for a platformer.
OoT- dungeons are all the same except shadow temple, all having similar designs with finding boss door early on and then looking for keys.
MM- nothing really for this one but some of the masks are bad and lots of the ideas aren’t fleshed out.
Goldeneye- controls bad again, which isn’t great for a multiplayer game.
      Tony Hawk- on multiple consoles
      Pokémon Stadium- don’t know enough
Banjo kazooie- don’t know that much but movement seems like mario 64 and music gets repetitive
Banjo tooie- many people have criticized this game already
Smash bros- nothing really for this one but the small roster would be unacceptable for a modern AAA fighting game.

In regards to the N64 one,
I grew up playing the DS remake of SM64 and didn't really understand the concept of graphical capabilities and limitations of older hardware, so when I first saw goofy-looking polygonal N64 Bowser in a video, I remember laughing about it with my brother. After playing both versions and learning more about the game's history and the overall video game industry, though, I've ended up enjoying the original a lot more. Even beyond what it represents, the controls are a lot tighter, it feels a lot less cluttered and more fun to run around in... It just offers a cleaner and simpler experience. Don't get me wrong, I still love the DS version and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but the point is that I was able to (at least somewhat) fully appreciate the original N64 classic even though I had no nostalgia for it.
All this to say that I don't agree with the fact that NOTHING on the N64 has aged well. I can't speak for a lot of the other games (including OOT and GoldenEye and such), but there's just so much to appreciate about Super Mario 64 even today. I mean, there's literally an entire website dedicated to playing and experiencing ROM ha---*ahem*, _modifications_ to the original. Clearly it's still doing something right, even looking beyond nostalgia.

Mario Sunshine was the last mario game I enjoyed. The atmosphere and locations were really memorable... unlike Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 which I regret playing through.
"they took Mario to frigging Space!" I never felt like I was in other world. None of the levels felt otherworldly, hell Mario Odyssey has far more otherworldly levels and that takes place on the planet Mario is from. The levels just look like pieces of the mushroom kingdom either in the sky or space, tiny little balls everywhere. Not a single level.
The games had two things going for it - the music and the fact it had a lot of boss fights. But even those things don't really matter because the last boss will just be bowser which is about as exciting as cleaning up your dogs poop at this point. They try so hard to make bowser a threat, like we are supposed to be afraid of this guy we have beaten over twenty times since we were children in the 80s.
Sorry, impossible. They make him giant in Galaxy 2 like that's supposed to be new and make a difference, even though they did the "giant bowser" thing better in yoshi's island.
They made a "cooler" version of the giant bowser in Bowser's fury where they actually changed his design, but it felt like fighting a goomba because there's nothing you can do to make bowser an exciting threat, not if they make him bigger than the planet, no matter how powerful they say he is, there's nothing they can do because all he is is a symbol of nintendos laziness.
That's why I don't play mario games anymore. If your main threat is not a threat then there is no excitement to be had. Shigeru Miyamoto didn't even want the story of Rosalina in there (seriously look it up), she would have just been some random space princess with no depth - he wants Mario games to be as insultingly as dumb as possible that's why he continues to make bowser the villain.

      @jaretco6423 Před rokem +3

@Vaquix If u think Sunshine is better than Galaxy, than I'm sorry. But you are so wrong on so many levels. Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario game ever. Not only was it obnoxious, repetitive & tedious, but it's also very unpolished & buggy compared to other 3D Mario games. I do like the tropical aesthetic of Isle Delfeno. But even those looked incredibly bland due to all being beach and plain like levels and most of them suffer from it's horrible design choices. Only one that stood out to me was the amusement park. But even that one gets repetitive. The control's is also pretty janky & unresponsive at times and the game has annoying physics & collision platforming that felt like the game was doing it's fault and not me. The bosses weren't memorable to me as there pretty generic to fight and gets repetitive on fighting some of them 2 or 3 more times. And don't even get me started on the 100% completion & reward u get. Lastly, the story wasn't even that good either. The Piantas and other citizens of Isle Delfeno are the stupidest people I've seen. Shadow Mario & Mario are nothing alike, yet they still think Mario was the culprit that painted the entire island and Bowser telling his son that Peach was her mother when there clearly not the same species is all too ridiculous. The game was rushed. It was messed up & just poorly design of an game.

As a hardcore Pokemon fan since I was 6 (I'm 17 now, soon to be 18 in 2 months), and someone who wants to go into game design and development, the sheer amount of glitches in Scarlet and Violet hurt my trust in the Pokemon franchise. And when they announced DLC for it, didn't show any actual gameplay footage, and then released the Vivillon Pokemon Go connectivity that has reports of people losing access to Pokemon SV, I'm guessing it wasn't bug tested enough because Scarlet and Violet weren't bug tested properly...
It makes me mad. And now that the 3Ds has just closed closed, and along with it 33% or more of currently purchasable (via official Nintendo methods) Pokemon games...

Maybe do what the western version of Yo-Kai Watch 3 did, make both versions 1 game. In the early 2000s I played a little game called Zelda Classic which allowed people to make their own Zelda quests. As it started out as basically a PC port of Zelda 1, you were mostly limited to things in that game with only a handful of new items and enemies to work with. I'm pretty sure they added a lot more features and customizability and such later on, but at the time despite not being limited to NES style graphics the quests for the most part played like NES Zelda with its four directional movement that snaps you to an 8x8 grid when you change directions and other such limitations. Still, over the course of a couple of years I must have played dozens of quests, many of which did some really creative and memorable things. I still remember a puzzle in one dungeon where I had to light a torch that was out of reach of the candle. I had the book so my wand shots would make fire when they hit a target, but they would overshoot the torch and hit the wall. I had to sleep on that one, and had a eureka moment where I hit one of the keese in the room with my wand shot as it flew over the torch, lighting it and allowing me to progress. I played quests themed after other games, including Mega Man and Metroid. People got creative and used fire spitting statues and forcing enemies to spawn on certain tiles that were hidden under a layer of foreground graphics to make custom bosses with weak points. Sure, they were all stationary, but after defeating the weak point all walkable tiles would invisibly turn into stairs to warp you to another room, allowing them to create multiple "phases" within the limitations of the engine. There was some really creative stuff. I really want to go back and see what became of that game, and what quests people have made over the last 20 years. People made some crazy fun experiences while working in a mildly expanded version of the Zelda 1 engine that were often a blast to play 20 years ago, so I believe that the opportunity for new Zelda games without being held to such restrictions is definitely there. The series could end now, and it would have been a good run with a load of great games to play, but I believe that it can still grow and provide new meaningful experiences. When 3D Zelda started to feel like it was treading a bit too much of the old ground, Breath of the Wild came along and shook things up with a new style brimming with potential that has yet to be fully reached with it only really having the one dungeon that felt like a proper one. A Link Between Worlds reused the map from A Link to the Past, but by making most items available early on and adding the wall merge mechanic completely turned how you explored it on its head. Who knows what they will come up with next?

I respect Barry, but my hot take is the exact opposite of his. The farther away we get from the the release of Zelda games, the more overblown the companion complaints get. Not only are you replaying these games for likely the 15th time, but you already have a pre-disposition for any new Zeldas, even something like BOTW. They don't have an issue of giving them cool designs or personalities, they don't have an issue of stopping the players progress because most of their hints are optional, they usually ARE very story significant. The key issue is that as a long standing gamer you DON'T need then, and you are projecting the nuisance status onto them.
On top of that, Fi is great, and all of her issues are more tied to the games UX than her dialogue. For one the game doesn't remember what you've previously gathered between boots. The Wiimote can only play wirelessly, and your batteries will drain and die mid gameplay, you can complain about Fi telling you your batteries are dying, but they're GOING to die anyway, you're literally shooting the messenger. Lastly is Dowsing, its actually a cool mechanic but it makes Fi a constant force, and it makes since for story moments, but not when you loose a few to many hearts.
I guess what I'm really getting at is, we love partners like Goombella because its cool that they added dialogue for so many little details... no one appreciates Navi, and all because she has the courtesy to ask 'Hey?' instead of interrupting the player... that's just not fair. Try playing Megaman X7 and com back to me with your partner complaints.

When the one about no N64 games aging well came up and I immediately started thinking about how the Zelda games on the N64 feel absurdly similar to every 3D Zelda game that came after (from like a control perspective, how Link moves, attacks, interacts with the environment, the targeting system, etc.) which is really saying something about how they nailed it on the first try with 3D Zelda. Then of course how Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie are just masterful in so many different ways.
But then Arlo said Star Fox 64 and I was like "OOOOH!!!" Stopped me dead in my tracks! That game is the quintessential on-rails shooter to me! Minor improvements could be made with regards to sensitivity of the analog stick but like... everything just WORKS on that thing! And I will not hear a THING about how the retical should be aimed separate from flying the ship. The game was designed with that in mind and you, as a player, must "get good" by adapting and using what resources and abilities are given to you.
POINT IS!!! Star Fox 64 is stupidly, stop-you-in-your-tracks amazing.

Zelda games are a tricky one. They're kind of like Star Wars at this point, in that they're legendary and we always want more of them, but at the same time any new additions to the franchise risk upsetting the delicate balance created by decades of lore, fan theorizing, expectations borne out of nostalgia, etc.
I've even heard it being said that with so many Star Wars TV shows, the franchise is starting to lose some of its mystery and becoming diluted, even if many of the newer shows are top-notch. But they very often insist on retreading on familiar territory rather than keeping closed chapters closed and creating new characters and stories that stand on their own merit.
The same could be said of Zelda games. We spend a lot of time with Link, Zelda, and Ganon, and throughout the years the series has risked becoming formulaic. That's one reason Breath Of The Wild felt so good, because it broke tradition and made everything fresh again, even if it did keep those three characters at the center once again. This has happened several times throughout the years, of course, but that's the most notable recent example for sure.
But how about getting a story that centers on a completely new Sheikah character, or a rogue Gerudo, with no mention of Link and Zelda at all? Or at the very least, we could make some of the side characters the main characters on their own spinoff game. How about a Sidon adventure set years in the future, or an Impa origin story? Maybe somebody else found the mask of Majora and now we can discover where all that evil came from.
Or even better, how about the development team gives the Zelda franchise some space and uses those resources and talent to create something completely new? A whole new story, a whole new universe, an entirely new character that we slowly learn to fall in love with, with a totally new gameplay style. There's nothing wrong with moving on to newer and different things every now and then. It's like all the Final Fantasy games we keep getting that keep changing up the formula but still insist on using the traditional spell names, summons, and recurring side characters as a justification to keep things in-universe. At what point does it become a completely different game that just stamps on the familiar brand for recognition but fails to be either faithful enough to tradition or new enough to be interesting?
On the other hand, if they ever decide to remake the 90's Zelda games with the Breath Of The Wild engine I'll be first in line to play that! :D

On the Smash take: Speaking personally, as of Ultimate, the character intro cinematics became so impressive and loving that, yeah, they honestly are my favorite aspects of the new characters. That's not even shade on the game...a huge component of Smash is celebrating these characters and series, and the cinematics do that wonderfully. I'm not remotely ashamed of this.
On the 64: I think this kinda points to a bigger trend of a lot of gamers being really quick to refuse to engage with something that doesn't instantly click with them. And I get it: People's time and funds are limited, gaming is supposed to be fun, investing in something when it isn't immediately apparent that it will be enjoyable puts a big risk on that time, energy, and funds. But I see so many (usually older) games just dismissed because of "insert single outdated feature here", often by people who never gave it an honest chance. Virtual Consoles and eShops had me excited to explore a bunch of material from before my time, and not all of it was top-notch, but I found a ton of gems I'd never experienced before, and there seems to be a vocal opposition to that kind of curiosity, at least among the most visible of gaming social media. Again, people can do what they want with their time...I just find it a little sad.
Anyway, plenty of 64 stuff works very well within the system's limitations. F-Zero X, Diddy Kong Racing, Wave Race 64 (a lot of racers), the Banjos, Paper Mario, Star Fox 64, and the Zeldas are my personal highlights.

Glad to see Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass getting a little more love despite their overworld issues! I grew up loving Spirit Tracks on my DS (It's actually sitting at home on my nightstand in my DSi waiting for me to finish it again), and will 100% agree that not only does Spirit Tracks have the best Zelda companion, I think that Spirit Tracks' incarnation of Zelda is actually my favorite version of the princess out of all the games. I think if Skyward Sword or Wind Waker's Zeldas had more screen time my opinion could be different, but I wasn't a huge fan of BotW Zelda, Twilight Princess Zelda is pretty good but she's pretty flat and stern. Spirit Tracks' Zelda is just fun to travel with, and she's absolutely my favorite

Sunshine >>>>>> Galaxy (Source: I've played and beat every main Mario platformer and then some).
    Full list:
A tier: Odyssey, Sunshine, Mario64, Mario World, Mario World 2
B tier: Galaxy, Galaxy 2, Mario 3, Mario 2, Mario 3D World, New SMB WiiU
C tier: Mario Bros, Mario 3D Land, Mario Land, New SMB, New SMB Wii, New SMB 2, Mario Run
D tier: Mario Lost Levels, Mario Land 2
I might have missed a couple, but, if I did, they probably are lower on the list anyways. And I'm not going to include Mario Maker 1 & 2 because the game is only as good as the skill of the person who made it, so it doesn't feel like it belongs alongside the (mostly) well polished level design of your standard Nintendo Mario games.

It's actually an interesting discussion, should game franchises end? We have movies that go on and on with sequels, and people eventually go: "Another one?! Didn't they just conclude that story?", and yet for video games, we're always like "well the game was good, so OBVIOUSLY there should be a sequel!". It's a weird dichotomy, and I'm not sure why it exists (But I'll never stop wanting new 3d Mario games!).

They forgot that he exists.
