    Collagen contribute to bone density ---
    Researchers found that a year of daily collagen peptides supplementation measurably
    --------- increased bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and in the upper femur. -------
    The women also had higher levels of a blood biomarker that indicates bone formation.

    As many studies show no direct correlation w/BMD and fracture risk future studies for collagen need to look at overall bone quality incl tensile strength. Vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score uses an MRI based trabecular scoring method. Pure generic collagen would ideally help avoid conflict of interest risk. Also ensures any negative effects are openly reported.

    Was the placebo used in these studies a different form of protein? If not I hypothesize the studies may be showing that resistance training plus protein supplementation lead to greater muscular hypertrophy than resistance training alone.

      I'm a bit late with this, but Protein containing Leucine is what you want (Dairy, Whey, Cheese, Eggs, Beef) to stimulate muscle growth + Collagen (Supplement, Bone Broth, Tendon) to provide Glycine which is essential for bone development. But you should aim for a minimum of 0.8g Protein per Pound of body weight for good health, not just muscle / bone growth. 1g Protein per Pound is optimal according to the literature.

  • @Ariel-oo1nc
    @Ariel-oo1nc Před 11 měsíci

    Great video. Speaking from an exercise science point of view, 1g of Protein to 1lb of body weight is desirable for muscle building effect. Since the Protein provided as Collagen was so small in these studies (under 20g/day), the results aren't surprising. Taking Whey protein 2x per day (not even collagen) will increase Muscle Mass and Bone Strength / Mineral density. Leucine is the "building" amino acid. Collagen on the other hand is an essential source of Glycine which is critical for Glutathione production (the body's master Antioxidant). Glycine, not Vitamin C is the immune booster we should be seeking.

      I don’t recall the brand names that don’t, but some plant based have heavy metals in them. I’m sure you’ll find them if you google that. Also, the brand she has on the table (blue container) has a version made from fish instead of cows.

      Hi Joana! Fish collagen or marine collagen is popular for people that don't eat red meat and is also the most bioavailable source of collagen since it has a smaller particle size. When you select a brand make sure the fish is from non-farmed or wild-caught fish to get the cleanest ingredients. The best marine collagen comes from the skins of fish.

      Hi Laura,
      I had the same issue before. I came to the hypothesis that the issue was with my liver. Glycine in the collagen has a strong impact on the liver and if there is an issue there it will not work well. You can try to detox your liver (castor oil pack,) and strenghten it( dandelion, burdock, milk thistle) It worked for me. Best health to you !

    The studies should also have compared collagen to other protein sources like whey or whey plus glycine. There is no evidence that collagen which is expensive, is any more effective than upping protein intake. Collagen gets broken down into amino acids in the gut. You don't actually absorb collagen. Your body remakes it from amino acids.
