- The Angliru is feared as the hardest climb in professional cycling. To "welcome" our new Spanish-language channel, GCN en Español, we decided it was time for another presenter challenge.

We are launching an all new channel for road cyclists, who speak Spanish. That’s right, GCN en Españ ol has officially arrived. But not only that, GCN is growing too, with a larger presenting team to help bring more videos, longer videos, and crucially, even better videos.
To celebrate this expansion, and particularly our new Spanish language channel, we’ve come out to the beautiful Asturias region in Spain, to go for a nice gentle ride so you can get to know your new presenters.
The Angliru is 13km long, and at an average gradient of 9.8% it’s clearly steep. However, those stats hide it’s real dark side. Half of the climb is well over 10%, including 3km that average 23%. The record stands at 41 minutes 55 and is held by Roberto Heras from the Vuelta in the year 2000. Most recently, Chris Froome rode up in 44:36 in 2017.
With ramps of up to 24%, it's harder than anything seen in the Tour de France and is always decisive when used in the Vuelta a España. Alberto Contador and Chris Froome have featured strongly when it was last used.
Although the average gradient of the climb is "only" 10%, this gives a false impression. The hardest parts come in the final half of the climb, which features brutal ramps of up to 25%.

GCN Presenter Challenge: Secret Santa. Each presenter has a small but equal budget. Each presenter draws the name of another presenter from a hat. That is the person who the budget must be spent on to buy a bike for. Each person receives their bike from their secret santa and then all are faced with a series of challenges in an overall race. A cobble stage, gravel stage, cyclocross stage, paved climb stage, flat paved stage, and paved descent. Prohibited are tricycles, kid's bikes, bikes obviously too small, motorized bikes (electric, gas or otherwise), and others that people can agree upon. All bikes must be in ride-able condition with at least 1 working brake upon receiving. Modification of the bike from the budget before presenting is allowed but the number of functional brakes before modification must be the same after. Adjustment of the bike after receiving is allowed. Fixed gears allowed? Up for debate.
I would also add that the gifter of a winning bike should be considered the real winner and all other participants should be placed in the race according to the place the bike they gifted took.

Emma is world class, but Si and Matt where there to produce an episode, that mean't getting footage, doing commentary. It's not exactly conducive to racing.
Longer climbs probably suite Emma better.

Wow what a great GCN Presenter Challenge! I guess that it wasn't so unexpected to see that Si did so well but I was more surprised that Emma didn't come to the front of the race... was looking to see her and Si maybe battle it out... looks like Oscar maybe hung up his wheels a little too early there!
Did we ever find out how much further Katherine rode to get to the top of the Angliru? Looks like she came across the line with the biggest smile... I guess if you can do the Dirty Kanza then a climb as tough as this wouldn't be so gruelling!
Toughest climb... local 20% climb where you are twisting and turning and can't see further than maybe 20 meters round the next bend!

Didn't Oscar take 2nd at the 2017 Taiwanese hill climb last year? I remember seeing that funky mustache on him throughout the race!
So you mean if I want to join GCN as a presenter I have to take the podium at Taiwan at least? I remember Emma winning there or something.
He also won nearly all races over here in Japan last year. He is a beast and way to young to retire in my opinion.
Emma won women’s at Taiwan KOM. Time were ahead of Si by quite a bit. I guess Si was doing presenting and commentary a bit. I’d expect Emma to finish ahead of Si if the race was longer. Ladies seems to be almost as good as men if not better when it comes to endurance races.
Im spanish, i watch both channels and Oscar is a savage beast, not my favourite personality but definetely a badass climber.
I'm calling it now, GCN is evolving the sport of cycling. Great job!

I'm pleased to say I've cycled up L'Angliru. Took pictures just before coming down and a friend thought I was in a plane. We were above the local Griffin Vultures; I'll never forget that.

This is the best channel on CZcams, I love all the presenters, I love the fun, I love the knowledge, fair dues to all of you, I loved watching Sean Kelly in my youth and lost the yen for cycling with all the doping stuff, GCN has brought me and my wife back, we love every show, thank you all so much. Great video GCN and the camaraderie between the presenters is spot on. It would be great to see live telemetry data from the riders, ascent, speed, power, cadence, etc. as they fight their way up the hill.

Emma wins by my book. Emma had to battle the race with the heavy weight and massive aero-dynamic drag being the only one to have a bell on her bike. A pity everyone else doesn't set the same example being as it was on a public road. Well done Emma!
