- Well all went to plan and the pipe cot style bunks are in! There may be a few bits I would do differently but for now it gives a simple soloution to create 2 additional beds while keeping things flexible and removeable.

The best part of this particular video is the obvious adoration you have for your daughters. They are 100% daddies girls and you look at them with complete adoration. Very nice! Beds look great and your wife is obviously a great partner in this entire adventure.
A couple of girls who had their giggle boxes tipped over.
Laughter while daddy tries to make CZcams video. Priceless.
Well done Tim and Jo. Keep up the great work.
Those bunk beds are hands down, the best idea for sleeping or storage areas! Never seen anyone do this kind of thing in a rig of any kind, and love that you can take them out and fold them up to slim and easy storage. Impressive!
Better make sure they don't drink anything just before bedtime, you wouldn't want to risk either of them having a little accident in their sleep or Mummy and Daddy, are quite literally, going to have a rude awakening! :D
We're making ours with waterproof canvas for the exact reason lol
I laughed out loud at the Hard wood dowel flexing more, probably wood 😂😂 badum tish!
Wish I'd had a dad like you
Great simple design. Nice use of the fabric so there's no need for a mattress giving headspace. And compact when not needed. Brill !!
A couple who can use a chop saw and a sewing machine just cant go wrong.
Amazing work, well done.👍👍👏👏
Your family is awesome and thank you for your videos. With lots of love from Iran 🇮🇷
Very clever. Love your giggly models.
Brilliant. Kiddies loving it too. Great work.
I just LOVE those rosey checked angels of yours. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent as usual Mr TRC (and not forgetting Mrs TRC) Always look forward to the new vids
Wow!😃Ain't you a lovely ,clever dad and mum. 👏👏
Brilliant bed solution that I haven’t seen before. I really got inspired and thinking about to do the same in my van.
PNW. Really enjoy watching your videos , some great ideas , I can feel a van conversion coming on myself
I haven't seen anyone make this type of sleeping quarters! Wonderful and relatively easy option to make!! Love your beautiful little darlings too!
Really cool idea with the bunk beds, so easy to fold away and store when not needed. Remember to put a yoga mat or duvet under the sheet, as the cold comes in from the bottom in a hammock even in the summer.
Thanks, seem to have worked out well. Yes we have some roll out matts for them.
This is almost the exact same method I used . It works perfectly . Your little ones are adorable loved your comment about we need some rules just after you gave them the idea of climbing out the sky light . Good times
Great ideas for the bunk beds! Loving your van conversion videos!
wow. you just blew my mind! i've seen a few vans here on youtube with a sleeping quarters for the kiddos but either they seemed a bit unsafe or it would involve a lot of engineering and wouldn't be able to be put away like yours. i love your idea here! really impressive.
Looks great Tim.
Loved that :)
Took me back to being a kid when my parents had and old Commer Camper with beds made that way (but length ways). Looking really good now.
Thanks. Yeah I remembered them being in my Grandma's caravan and seemed like a good route to go for the van.
Trawling You Tube looking for bunk bed options and come across this vid. What a really great idea. I'll be using this. Thanks.
Love the slip up towards the end, a lovely big bandsaw lol.
Great construction and we'll thought out layout that meets your current needs. Keep the good work coming.
That saw is on offer at evolution online for £100 (50 off) plus another 5% when you subscribe to new letters.
Very compact very good use of space nice work
Great stuff Tim
This video has really helped me out a lot. Thanks.
this is so clever. thanks for the ideas
What impressed me most in this otherwise great clip, is just how fortunate your daughters are to have such a patient and respectful father. Sure, you are talented and do good work. However these are but a shadow compared to your role modelling attributes. Blessed you are.
Wow! Great idea!
I don’t think either of them thought about climbing out onto the roof until you suggested it. Great idea.
Van is in need of colour it’s very white inside. 😀
Yes, may have sown a seed there! Fortunately the heki locks out with the pins so fairly secure! :-)
Looking great.
What a brilliant idea 👍🏻👍🏻
Smart idea man 👍 good job. Thank you for your video.
Looks like the van is coming leaps and bounds 👍
and you still have the option of moving the holders down to the bed level facilitating the use of the bunk beds as an alternative to the beds if you need to move stuff that will require larger carrying capacity, guess you could incorporate the bunk bed holders into the beds as well.
Great job 👍🏻
I can only wish for awesome kids like yours!!!!
You could use Therm-a-rest self inflating air mattresses to give a bit more comfort to the bunk beds. Just a thought.
A huge success! No wee wees kids!
This is my biggest fear! 😂
At least there would be something/someone to absorb the moisture underneath! 😁
Not how I wish to wake up on holiday!
Very inventive!
Great van, enjoy.
This is what we plan to do!
I slept in a similar bed in the mid 90s in my ex in laws ford transit van. I was about 25 and surprisingly they were very comfortable. Your children will get years out of them.
And yet again a winner
very smart idea
Very clever. Your kids love it. Will they ever go to sleep or keep you up all night having fun??? Great idea‼️👍🏻 Vinny 🇺🇸
Cute kids good to see them in Good hands :)
Great idea 😀
Ingenious!
great idea!
Alot of Renault and MAN Lorries have this type of bunk as a top bunk, so if it can hold a big fat trucker like me I'm sure your girls will be fine😂😂😂
Top job sir
Amazing idea. Wish I had need for a bunk bed :-)
Very cool
Brilliant. I have a similar idea, but to hold an adult up there (tho would lower the mounting points a bit for fairer headroom split between lower and upper.
But essentially cut a 4' x 6' piece of plywood in half to make 2 that are 4' x 3'. Now fasten each half on the outer walls where your notched 2x4 is by screwing 4' piano hinges into the plywood, and into the 2x4s near the top of them. This lets each half, when not in use, fold down along the outer walls out of the way, and can be fastened in place behind the lower cushions as backrests on each wall.
Raising them towards the middle and up makes the two halves meet in the middle where slight overraising allows inserting your aluminum poles for support, or in my case I was thinking of angle steel in similar "V" notched slots holds them at the walls and you can lower each plywood half down onto them.
The difference would be one continuous flat rigid surface ready for an air or foam mattress as opposed to your two "mini hammocks", and it should well support an adult.
But for 2 small children, your design is genius!
If it's a flat double bed you need then that sounds great but just to mention that I have slept up there a few times and works fine. Obviously teh taller you are the lower down the wall they would need to be! Found no need for a mattress as it's hammock like. Although of course I will sleep on the main bed out of choice. :-)
I love your videos, very helpful, great ideas and well explained. Thanks for sharing them! I was hoping you might be able to tell me what you used to secure the bed supports to the walls of your van? Ours keeps slipping out but I know very little about bolts and the like!
Yes Marilyn I agree the girl have very clever parents, I have not seen bunks like that in any van or trailer before ... only one thing if you take the bunks down and roll em up I would make a sock or bag for them before storing to keep them clean.
Hugh Tube did one like this a few months ago.
We used to have bunk beds like this in our 1970s caravan. They went up lengthways at one end on the van, to make 2 bunks for 4 kids. Parents had dbl bed at other end.
Smart!
I think I found the solution to fit beds and motorcycle...
Great creative plan! I would be curious to hear if nighttime “accidents” would drip down 😬
Neat design Tim
Thanks, seems to have worked well. One of the easier parts of the build, the woodworking side of things is rather more bespoke! What I would do for a straight wall. All good fun though, hope you're well. :-)
I know the feeling! I'm well thanks, all done at Bristol for the year, heading back home tomorrow :)
Nice T-shirt! 8-)
Hopefully that's supports them
Love thy bunkbeds. I would lower another 6 inches down n make more room for the kids or big kids
I went off where the structural rib is in the van and also wanted plenty of space to sit below. But like you say it might be more future proof to go a little lower. That said I have had a nap up there and providing the roof vent is open it doesn't feel too cramped, but may do for some.
Hi Tim, love your van conversion and just doing one myself using your bunk bed idea. We want to make sure we buy the correct strength fabric. Do you know what fabric your partner purchased? many thanks!
I really like your bunk bed set up. I'm planning on doing something very similar so it's great to already see it working so well. What weight/ thickness of material/ canvas did you use?
What a wonderful and creative way to make a bunk! Your girls are adorable! How much weight do you think those bunks can hold? Enjoy your journey!!!
Slept up there myself so they seem to be pretty strong.
Hi im going to be making two of these soon, could you give a link to the canvas, poles and end caps please 👍
Do you make these beds. I wouldn’t have the skills to do it but what an amazing bit of kit
They can double as a medical cot if your out hiking somewhere and someone gets hurt. You can carry them back on those.
Yes, no differnet the the old type of stretchers. :-)
This is perfect for what we need for our kids. I'm just about to order 35mm aluminium tube but just wanted to check the thickness, I'm thinking 3mm but interested to know what those ones are?
Thanks
Maybe have an umbrella next to your bed incase it rains ''little accidents'' from above? lol
Great channel I've just got the same van I will be stealing most of your work keep it up
Were did you get your graffics for the van brakes the white up great
Nice idea! Thanks for sharing! May I ask, how good is this idea in practice? How comfortable is it for your children to sleep on such a bed?
Hey, just a quick one really - you don't happen to remember where you got your fabric from or what kind of fabric it is do you? I looked at deck chair fabric, but it's narrow!
Currently undergoing a van conversion, with baby and dog in tow, so hope to use this idea for the baby bunk!
Fantastic video and ideas as usual! Cheers!
Hi we are looking to do similar thing in our van. I just wondered if you had more info on the wood bits that you put on the walls to hold the metal poles. I’m guessing they aren’t just screwed into the cladding you’ve also screwed then in to wood batons behind or the metal? Sorry for all the questions.
I've got a ducato, and contemplating the same design. Thanks very much. How critical, would you say, is screwing the 4x2 into the van metal, if I contemplated having the bunks lower? And for that, did you use rivnuts or just sheet metal screws?
How much extra material did you add on to the width of the bed to make the channel for the pipes
really loving this conversion so far! how much weight can the top bunks hold?
No idea scientifically but I would be confident using one, if you are using for adults often just use the 50mm poles I guess.
Kids look made up! great idea
Do have a link to how you did the brackets for these please?
What diameter/thickness was the poles? 48.3mm or 33mm?
What material did you use for the beds?
Where did you get the aluminium poles and end caps from?
Great video, thanks. Are the poles 35mm? I can only seem to find 33.7mm here in Holland... We are converting a Mercedes 609d, so bit older but your video's are a big help and inspiration!
No I think that is the size you mentioned. They did come at around 50mm too if you need stronger.
Any chance of a link to the fabric you used?
I really looking this type of design. But only floor bed for adult and waist level bed for kids. How will it looks?no one has do that design so far.
Please help! Where do i purchase scaffolding poles feom please 😊xx
Really good idea mate! I'm stealing this one I think!! How did you decide on the height? I think I'd go 5inch lower but interested to know your thoughts?..
I went for the same point that there is a structural rib on the van. As it was only for the kids we wanted to make it so we could still sit below it if we left bunks up during the day.
Hi. This is the idea I’ve been toying with for my van. Can I ask where you bought the poles from please.
Scaffold Poles Direct or Scaffold direct, or something along those lines. :-)
The Restoration Couple that’s great thankyou :)
Wait did I miss the episode where you made the bed/couch underneath
No just wanted to get it all painted in the same video. It’s coming next. 👍
Did you sort the gear cables?
Yes, well 80% better. I greased everything I could get to on the linkage and also left it in reverse gear while parked overnight for a while and now things seem to have improved. It may be the warmer weather that has helped too. Anyway I will be getting it looked at during it's service so that we can get it all back to normal, but for now I am happy to reverse into the driveway without fear of becoming stranded in the middle of the road! :-)
I'm not sure if you are still checking comments on this video. If so, may I ask are these still working out well for you? Also, How many pounds do you suppose they would hold OK? I have 3 grandchildren ages 6-11 and my own 17 year old son and it's hard to find 5 places to sleep in my shuttle bus camper. I've been considering this style hammock for the younger ones. Thank you for your time. Nice video!
I've spent a few nights up there myself when the kids have fallen asleep on the main bed. Was easier than trying to move them and it's plenty strong enough. 👍
where did you get those ally poles?
Scaffolding supplies.
In my opinion you should use Mild Steel instead of aluminium. Mild steel has tensile strength which will allow it to bend if overloaded however aluminium will snap if the load goes beyond its limit. And the weight difference based on your application i believe will be negligible.
Do you have a link for the tubes and caps please?
Scaffold Poles Direct or Scaffold direct, or something along those lines. :-)
The Restoration Couple Thank you
Genius!! Could you give the specs on the poles and fabric?
How many pounds can it hold
Not sure. I’ve slept it on myself a few times if that helps.
