My Pop died the day of the Air Traffic Controllers Strike, on the other side of the USA. My Mom was already in a hospital very ill. I was blessed by a lovely Reservationist at American who got me seats for my sister, husband and I. No meltdowns from any of us. No mistreating anyone at all. We were adults and we acted as adults! That was in 1981. How people have turned into lousy, stinking, out of control animals in only 35 years is beyond me! I'm through with flying!

I know when I have a family member or someone I cared for pass the last thing I want to do is be a jerk. I normally just keep to myself and don’t want to talk to some stranger. If a person tries to start a conversation I would respond but kind of hint I am not interested in some lengthy conversation. Sometimes it doesn’t work but if the person is nice it can be a good thing to get my mind away from the situation for a while. I wouldn’t be in any mood to deal with some jerk.

That answer is a lot easier to answer: it's because when Bill Clinton took office, they started to "REWARD BAD BEHAVIOR". That's the time period when they started punishing good behavior, and achievement, and it has gotten worse, and worse since. Until we, as a society turns it around, it'll be impossible to be peaceful.

The opposite can apply too. My wife and I was on a flight where every seat was taken. We were to be separated on different flights because a baby had spit up on a seat and it hadn't been properly cleaned. Long story short. We made the same flight with me sitting on a trash bag. I told the attendent that it wasn't a big deal. When we deplaned both of us just waited until the last since we were in the last row. On the return flight after we were seated an attendant came to us and said we needed to move. OK no big deal again. But she took us to first class!! The entire flight they treated us like royalty. I asked why first class and found out it was because I was so accommodating on the first flight. So, good manners can yield suprises.

I have a lot of flight miles and learned many years ago that the flight crew take notes on passengers and share them online with each other. They will absolutely attach a note to someone if they have a return flight, and something noteworthy occurred on the outbound leg. Usually it's not a good note.
I used to bring cinnamon rolls for a small-plane flight crew regional that code-shared United from LA to Monterrey, CA. Flew it every week and got to know them all. I would fly from DC to LA, then Monterrey. One day I got a question from the United purser on the DC -> LA route. She asked when they were going to get some cinammon rolls. She was smirking.
That might have been two attendants talking to each other as I walked by, or maybe there was a note on my 'permanent record' at United?. Either way, aviation is a small world so if you are in it, you better be nice.
And yes, I once I figured out her rotation schedule I made sure she and her crew got some donuts on the next outbound we shared (there were no rolls at the outbound terminal).
      I miss the old days.

As a regional flight attendant with an airline contracted to fly 4 different carriers, we've had very difficult passengers. One time on Delta a woman had to be escorted off by police. She was banned from flying on Delta. I don't remember for how long, but I did relish the passenger's clapping when she was taken off. Not the first time I had to deal with this. You have to nip bad behavior, or a person boarding drunk or high, immediately because once you're at 35,000 feet, you're stuck if things escalate. And sad to say, it's often women more than men, and I've had both.

Just did a multi-city trip on United. Three of my four flights over an hour to 2 hours late. I brought an under-seat rolling bag as my personal item, and because it had wheels every flight attendant I passed said I had to check it because they had no room in overhead baggage. I had to keep pointing out it fit under the seat and the last agent said I yelled at her when asked again as I told her it fit under the seat. You would think these attendants could recognize an under-seat item. To top it, my checked bag went on a different plane, though I was able to easily recover it at my destination. No matter the cost, airlines have their end of the deal to uphold, like being on time and having room for baggage, and not constantly haranguing the passengers about the airline's problem, which makes us all grouchy. Of course, passenger courtesy is a must. Leave the political opinions at home and stop the me first, control your kids, and learn how to sit in a seat without jumping up to talked to your relative across the aisle or getting up to visit your relatives a few rows down - you can do that after you land.

Like 74Gear, I was a 747 pilot. Flew Navy nine years then commercial for another 31 years.
A funny story from when I was newly hired at the airline back in 1985. Smoking was still very big in those days although limited to cigarettes. A crusty old captain was flying his 727 from Seattle to Minneapolis when a flight attendant calls up front. She reports that a very obnoxious guy in the smoking section has lit up a big cigar and refuses to put it out. So the captain announces over the PA that this dude better put out the cigar or the aircraft will divert to the nearest airport (which happened to be Fargo, ND) and he will be removed from the aircraft.
Unhappily, no cooperation from the passenger who continues to smoke his stogie. The captain radios ahead to Fargo that his aircraft will be landing there and this passenger will be put off. He also has the station agent call up his counterpart with the only other airline with flights out of Fargo (United Airlines) and asks could they please not honor this dude's ticket.
End of story: fat cigar man is stranded in Fargo and forced to rent a car to get back to Minneapolis.

The worst was when I was in First Class, non-smoking, and it happened to be one row in front of the standard class smoking section! There was essentially no difference between my seat and being smack dab in the smoking section. Every time I fly, I am grateful that smoking is no longer allowed. Common sense, really, but I do understand--back in the day, 75% of Americans smoked!!

Years ago I was in a checkpoint line with my wife at the airport in Rhodes, Greece. A man in his early 20's was in line in front of us and was clearly hungover. His appearance was sloppy, eyes bloodshot, and he reeked of alcohol. A policeman monitoring the line walked over and very politely pulled the man aside and told him to go to the bathroom and clean himself up. The man, without any entitlement (or maybe he was too exhausted and hungover), complied. I've never forgotten the whole exchange because not only was it very civil, but the fact that there was an expectation of a standard to fly on an airplane. It would be great if we could bring that level of standard for people to fly back to the U.S.

Too many people haven't been punished for bad behavior and it shows. I was on a flight from Chicago to Atlanta. A young man in his early 20's was blasting music and being very obnoxious before we even took off. The 80 year old lady behind me turned around and confronted him and told him to knock it off, be respectful of those around him, and represent his family in a better way. I was jumping up because if he went at this old lady I was going to step in. But to his credit he accepted her redirection, apologized, and was fine for the flight. In speaking with her, she said she was a retired teacher (I'm a special ed teacher). We had a great conversation and it was wonderful to hear her stories. She was very profound. She had a young grandson with her and she reiterated to him that the way you act in public is absolutely how people are going to judge you, and she expects him to always hold him to the highest standard. It showed cause that young 10 year old boy was very polite.

That's awesome...!! I've always received compliments on how well my children behave out in public, especially with my oldest son...!! He was extra mannerly and would even shake everyone's hand, when first meeting them before he turned 3yrs old...!! Even my sister would say how well behaved they were, since the two of us had kid's that were around the same age and hers would act like donkeys whenever we went out to eat or anywhere a kid isn't suppose to not play around at....!! Like they would be crawling under the tables while waiting to order our food and all I had to do was look at each of my kid's with a certain look and they knew not to follow behind their cousins....!! She would always say thing's like your children are really good out in public but mine behave better at home...!! Finally after hearing that line one too many time's I finally had to tell her that I had 4 kid's 2 boy's (2 1/2 year's apart) and 2 girl's (18 month's apart) so of course they were going to bicker and argue at time's but they didn't fist fight each other and she only had 2 kid's a boy and a girl that were almost 4yrs apart so what could they possibly have to even argue about...!! So of course her house wasn't as loud and chaotic as mine but her children weren't any more well behaved than mine were.....!! Needless to say she didn't like what I said but I held my tongue for far too long and was tired of trying to keep the peace just because her kid's wouldn't listen to her when out in public....!! They weren't really terrible kid's, they weren't malicious or anything they just did thing's to aggregate and was used to being entertained and having all her attention when she was around them, where my kid's didn't have to have all my attention because they each had a built-in BFF, someone to play with all the time....!! Sorry for the mini essay, u didn't mean for it to be this way but truthfully I've wrote too much to delete it now.....!!

Absolutely, I raised four sons, and we always told them that when they're in public, they are a reflection of us their parents. Also, they were taught to be respectful and hold doors for their lady and mother.
Discipline is so important and it needs to start when they are young. Can't tell you how many times I've been in stores or restaurants where parents just allow their children to be unruly and scream at the top of their lungs.
I was raised in an era where in public children are to be seen and not heard, and yes, and no, sir or ma'am. Also, please and thank you in the time of manners. Be respectful of your elders expect maybe in the older lady acting like a child she was far too old to be acting like that. All of the clips were ridiculous and appalling behavior!! There is never a reason to be that repugnant.
There are things I don't like, but I'll never or will never at like that. It doesn't matter how bad your day was. it doesn't give anybody the excuse to act like the way those people did.
Unfortunately, there are truly Karen's and Ken's out there. I knew Karen's are out there, but never none crossed my path until a few months back. Similar experience except not wearing anything political. Just me getting to a handicap space way before her. Well, this Karen drove up behind my car, and when I got out of my car, her hubby was exiting his car.
Had my handicap sign hanging on my mirror, she screamed at me. Speaking to her husband, she yells out, "Does she even have handicap tag?" I turned to look back at her and said,"Yes ma'am, I have one it would you like to see it?" "Just because you can't see my disability doesn't mean I don't?Her husband looked horrified at his wife's behavior.😊😊

I fly Spirit at least 25 times a year for business and pleasure. I fly Spirit for several reasons, one of which is for some good old free entertainment aka passenger drama. Sadly, I have yet to see any "real" drama. Am I just unlucky???
The most drama I have come across is when somebody threw a small fit because I demanded $3,000 for one of my empty seats in my row for her to have her small child sit in (originally she had the child on her lap aka free flight).
I purchase the entire row of seats (3 of them) in the front by the Emergency Exit as I have more legroom and I can sit in the middle seat and sprawl out. I am a very large man who is 6'7" 265 lbs with a 59" chest, 25" arms, and 30" thighs. I am commonly confused with being a bodybuilder or a Professional Football Player. I purchase the entire row so not only am I comfortable, but also no one is forced to have me sitting next to them lol.
One thing I do to make the ticket agents and crew smile is I purchase several $10 gift cards from one of the better Coffee places at the Airport and I give one to each ticket agent at the Gate and to each of the Flight Attendants and Flight Crew and I thank them for getting up at this ungodly hour of the morning (I pretty much always fly the earliest morning flights), and hope that we all have a great flight.
Needless to say, IF the plane I am on has a First Class (very few Spirit Flights do), and an extra seat in 1st Class is available, I get a free upgrade lol. However, the Flight Attendants appreciate that someone of my size is near an Emergency Exit (just in case lol).
I really don't know why more people don't buy the Flight Crew/Attendants, and Gate Ticketing Agents Gift Cards for basically a free Coffee as it puts a smile on their faces and usually makes me their "favorite" passenger for that flight. Not to mention, back when I was single, it got me several fun-filled nights with some Flight Attendants lol.

Aisle person got up, so I took advantage of it and tried to climb over the middle person. Worked well on the way out, definitely not so much on the way back 😭😭 I was petrified, but thankfully the person in the middle didn’t get hurt when I collapsed half on her (she didn’t even wake up). My arm still hurts 2 weeks later from falling on the seat in front though 😂 next time I’m afraid I’ll have to be a mean person and wake her up 😕 I don’t want to risk hurting someone, or breaking my arm mid-flight. I normally try to organize myself so I only have to go once, max twice on a 13-15h flight, but that’s THE part that sucks about the window seat.

I've abruptly gotten to my feet on landing after crossing the ocean, with some looks of trepidation by someone in the aisle seat, I'd reassure them, "No worries, just in a great big hurry to get off of the newest flat spot in my arse and stretch, sure ain't going anywhere in a hurry" and nod to the congested aisle.
Always got a chuckle, I got to stretch in place for a bit.

A friend of mine booked Spirit (their first and LAST time doing so). The flight attendants didn't show up for the flight so it was cancelled. Spirit being Spirit was doing fuck all for the passengers save for telling them they could fly standby on the next flight out 2 days later. Everyone was losing their mind and screaming at the gate agent. Friend finally got up to the counter with their son, was polite, apologized for how everyone was behaving, and was given the last 2 seats on a flight leaving less than 2 hours later to an airport only an hour from where they were originally supposed to land. Treat the airline employees like human beings and you might just get treated like one in return.

You are 100% spot on with your ideas of banning people who disrupt flights. I fly 3-5 times a year and luckily have never witnessed any kind of behavior like these examples, but it also depends on the carrier as well, since I fly Alaska and not the cheapo airlines. There is a reason that planes are labeled as the "Greyhound buses of the skies," since flying has become lesser of an experience than is used to be back in the 60's and 70's. People used to dress up for their flight, but now it's flip flops, running shorts and a torn T-shirt as their people clothing of choice. I still dress smart casual for my flights, and I will continue to do so, but I still have to deal with the guy in the middle seat spilling over into my space while on a 6 hour flight from coast to coast..............so I will sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight, is all I can do.

One time my flight was late taking off and I was in danger of missing my connection. Long story a lot shorter, it was VERY important that I arrive at my final destination on time. I was in a window seat, and I told my seatmates (a newlywed couple) where I was going. When the plane was parked and the seat belt light went off, those people stood up and blocked the aisle so I could get out. One sprint through the airport later, the agents at my new gate saw me coming, addressed me by name, and said they were waiting for me. And I got to my destination on time. All that to say there are still some mighty decent people out there.

Eventually, your heart isn't going to be able to push through 300ish pounds of body (even if it's muscle) and you'll have to do it anyway. Plus there will be wear and tear on your hips and legs which will cause you increasing pain after age 60. Walking helps prevent that (by lubricating the joints) *and* weight loss also reduces the wear.
Also, if the weight isn't muscle, you risk developing diabetes and simply walking for 15 minutes an hour after meals greatly reduces your risk tremendously.

My mother passed away many years ago in 1995 in San Jose, CA. Because of certain circumstances happening back at home, I found I would not be able to stay for her funeral but instead had to fly home to Fort Worth immediately that day. The plane was packed and yeah it was uncomfortable, because I wanted to continue crying in my grief but I did not. My stress level was at maximum but I held it together and did not take my discomfort, anxiety, or sorrow out on the anyone. Of course, when I reached my car back in Fort Worth at the parking garage, and I was by myself, I broke down again and bawled pretty good for a while. The point I am making, is..... we have control of how we act toward others and outside forces. Your problem or discomfort is NOT their problem and maybe if you are more polite and aware that others have their own story going on, you may find they might even try to rectify your discomfort as much as they can. I find most people are actually very accommodating and helpful to others; if you show respect toward them and their rights, then it is a win-win for everyone. Grandma in Texas. PS. Anonymity will cause that. A bunch of strangers unlikely to meet again do not need to have such restraints.
World of Warcraft is an online game. They have many servers for players to choose to create their characters and play on. Now they have cross server technology. Before they had that you could only play with the people on the same server. Due to that players better behave or they would get a bad reputation on the server. People with bad reputation had a hard time to be invited to play group content and risked getting kicked out when they did. Now a bad reputation is utterly irrelevant.

You are going to jail. The longer I stand around and argue with you the greater my chances of losing my temper or something bad happening to me. People not willing to comply never change their minds so why waste everyone else’s time? Be decisive, move quickly, and before they know it, they’re on their way somewhere they don’t want to go. They will have lots of time to think about their actions later.

NOBODY should be disrespectful to any crewmember whether on a plane or ship or whatever. The other side of this, is that planes and/or cruise ships need to ENFORCE the rules and regulations they have ALREADY established. One cruise SAID they were cracking down - but from recent vlogs/posts they are already NOT enforcing THEIR RULES! Airlines and Cruise Lines should SHARE their "do not fly" / "do not cruise" lists with their other counterparts. No normal person wants to fly/cruise with another individual who doesn't know how to behave. 6 months - NO make it AT LEAST a year, possibly more by determination of the flight crew and/or Captain.

Totally agree. It's the same with boarding. I always wait till everyone else is inside. Then you can walk through the check, the gate, and into the plane without any hassle. It even gave me priority boarding one time when everyone rushed to the gate when they announce it would open up for general seating and I stayed in my chair, reading peacefully. One of the people working at the gate came to me and asked if everything was ok. When I replied I was just waiting to get aboard once the main rush was finished, he was so kind as to let me board through the priority line because he loved that I was just calmly waiting there. If only more people would do that, he told me too 🙂 It made my day!

While I understand where you are coming from, your wish is actually quite rude and anti-social. It's sad that people seem to think that 'shutting up' is the only good way to behave.
I wholeheartedly disagree with this notion and feel sad that this is apparently the state of society.
In an ideal world, it's actually best to have a nice chat with each other. You are probably sitting next to someone you never met before. Why not show sincere interest in each other and maybe learn a thing or 2? Obviously exceptions make rule. In the case of the first lady, it probably would have been better to avoid the subject of the weird T-shirt.
But in general .... yeah guys. Go have a chat with each other.
I have flown a lot, although usually legs that take 6-11 hours and always by myself. I have encountered some great people over the years. And yes. At times there was no chatter. Not everybody likes it, and we should respect that as well. I have been silent myself as well. Although mostly that was due to a rough 1st leg of my travels :D
So yes. Sitting still in full ignore mode as you are suggesting is quite rude, yet I fear that you are correct in that it's the best possible solution in this broken world.
People can't play nice any more. Which means that being an antisocial prick is the best feasible option we got :(

"Based on what has happened in the news with unruly passengers, that will not be tolerated on this plane." The captain then continues with what will happen if anyone does do something, professionally speaking. The area applauded the speech. The only problem we had, it was too short of a flight.
