This is the second part of our mini series on the cost of cruising, in which a couple of friends and us laid down the costs of buying and sailing our boats full time, and compare them.
In this video, we are looking at our own boat, Polar Seal, our Beneteau oceanis 40 from 2007, and how much it cost us to buy her, how much we pay in maintenance and insurance each year, as well as our monthly marina and fuel budget.
As someone pointed out in the last video, the costs associated which each of our boats are the results of choices that we made! Today, we’re giving you a look into our choices: in what context we bought our boat and the criteria we had before buying her.
We then give you a quick tour our boat and talk about how she is equipped. If you want the absolute full tour of the boat, I’ve made a 20 minutes video that shows all her corners, which you can check out also at the link above me.
In this video, we’ll also talk about what we think are the pros and cons of our boat, and will end by telling you how much she cost us to purchase, to maintain and to cruise.

Thanks for going through all the costs that are associated with a boat. Most people just think about the initial purchase cost and then are shocked to find that the costs are only beginning!
Our boat is 51 years old and we are putting a bunch of money into her with the refit (thankfully we sailed to a cheaper country to do it in)

Thank you. I recently bought a Beneteau 323 and like you admire the finishing touches. I'm not concerned so much with my open cockpit - yet.
They are very wide in the aft quarter, great open cockpit, while at anchor or day sailing and weekend cruising, but while passage making in 30 knots with 2 reefs in and only half your headsail and 2 knots of current contrary to the seas, I'll take a smaller heavier centre cockpit boat any day, all the modern production boats nowadays are designed with two aft cabins basically for the charter industry, these boats offer huge cockpits but no real stable platform to sail from in foul weather, the helms are super far from the two cabin top winches and the deck organisers and jammers for reefing lines, halyards etc, they, like all the modern production boats are capable of circumnavigation, but it's not a boat I'd want to do it in, I'd be happier in a 33' 40 year old centre cockpit, shoal draft or preferably modified full keel, with a beam of 11'6" than a bendytoe. You could buy a beautiful 20 year old 42' Hallberg Rassy centre cockpit for same money, no comparison in my opinion

Great choice and video. We've had the 373 model 11 years now and sailed some rough seas. The boat has always taken good care of us, and everyone admire our big cockpit too. But yes there are always compromises! The best investment so far was new crusing sails, less heeling and more upwind performance.
Same thing for us, we got new sails last year and it made such a big difference! :)

Also, have you considered installing over head hand rails in the saloon? That would help to address your issue with being able to get around in the cabin more securely when underway. It's not a particularly difficult install, though it might depend a bit on the nature of your overhead cabin liner.

Thank you for honest and very straight-forward figures. 15k EUR annually is not a bargain (at least not for countries with average netto salary around 1k EUR/month :-) ). Looking at similar calculation from your fellow YT sailors from around the world, these are completely different figures, but most of the other tend to reduce "running costs" in order to increase sustanability of the sailing livestyle - avoiding marina, fishing, repairing DYI as much as possible, seeking workshops and service in cheap countries etc. I'm planning to sail away for years with my wife once kids will fly away from the nest, mortage payed off, will sell houses (keep reserve for small one + living for retirement of course) and in few years, this will make a remaining budget for adventure of approx 400k EUR for this. Which means we could go for a brand new Oceanis 38.1, customized for our needs as liveboard couple from the scratch, and still have around 100-150k EUR as the running budget. Now considering the pure costs for running the boat is the deal breaker, because it can obviously differ a lot. Some sailors on small simple boats with DYI can go around 100 EUR / month TCO, medium boats with some "luxury" of services and marinas seemed to be about 500 EUR / month, and then a pleasant "almost-full-service" usually tend to be between 1-2k EUR / month. Now when we talk about why we sail, it's about living the life at full, so be out there, enjoy it, simply just do it - eat, sleep .... ehh, you know what I mean, right? Not to sit on a boat cause you've just payed the bill and can't afford to put a gas into dingy's engine, go to shore, hike up the mountain, have a chat with locals, eat the best local stew and go diving with your new friends ... just as an example. So to sum things up, thanks again for sharing your experience, because it helps me more clearly to understand the gap between the options for sailing adventure for us in middle Europe (not counting "2 weeks S/V rental with friends" as equivalent) - either work harder to afford going out for few months every couple of years with no regrets, or save enough to sail away to cheaper parts of the world for long and stay very modest to keep that dream alive for long enough ;-)

Beneteau made a great shallow draft version of the First 40.7 Fast Bluewater Cruiser / Racer. These are great for the Caribbean and Pacific Islands.
Great video, really liked these series and after watching it I am now a new subscriber from Sweden.
Some questions:
- Ryan seem American and Sophie got a somewhat Frenchie accent I wonder Why did you choose Swedish flagging? Is there benefits compared to American or French or other? I know in most USA you would have to register it and in most states you would have to pay property tax which is insane as the boat as a property does not really come with land haha. I know the Swedish rules is that as long as the boat is either less than 12m long or less than 4m wide (a boat that is 20m long and 3,99m wide pass) you dont need the "skepparexamen" or similar in Sweden. Basicly since your boat pass under the 12/4m rule you would not need any marine education at all except VHF radio licence and Radar. Swedish annual slips are dirt cheap compared to many other countries and Nature slips are basicly free. Insurance is in comparison cheap. Any other benefits? You could make a video about it.
- How come you choose a Oceanis 40 in front of a 40CC which is more towards blue water cruising then a Oceanis 40?

hey guys,good vid on your boat,am loving the series so far. So what you bought is really an ex charter boat designed for the Med. It looks big,comfy, don't need handholds when all you do is motor everywhere and park in a marina to party.(not saying that's what you are doing). They are a pretty good basic boat to start off with.
(Ryan) hi Shane. She is actually a privately owned boat, only one owner before us. We really did not want an ex chart boat. But yes... many of these are built and used for that purpose. Though she can be used for many others.

You can add a full enclosure for the cockpit. Not sure the cost but it makes it nice in the storms.
That’s actually the first upgrade we made! Our Bimini has a full enclosure, which we absolutely love :) and... it did not come cheap, that’s for sure 😆

Hi Guys. I've come a little late to your channel, but now subscribed. Your videos are very well done. I have one question for you and hopefully I'm not repeating this from somewhere else. I'd be very interested to know how your maintenance and repair costs of EUR6,000 per annum break down, approximately. I'm planning on buying a similar sized boat and am running the numbers over the next few weeks or so. Much appreciated! :)
Interesting that you two use the aft cabin as the main cabin. Most don't, but we get it. We have a center-cockpit and love the aft cabin for sleeping. I didn't notice, but do you sleep athwartships in your aft cabin? We do and after four boats we would not change that!
What we do with the bar tab is include it in fuel costs. You can also throw coffee in with that. And anything else that keeps the vessel moving forward in a fun fashion.
It seems that everyone from that side of the pond is always looking to ways of getting to this side of the pond so they can get into the Pacific. Do you two feel that way?

Your points about your boat it right in line ,as a old boat builder we would call a Ben Oceanis 40 a Med cruiser . Sure you can take it blue water sailing but not the best choice . But any boat is not perfect at all things .

Hi Glenn. Yes.. these "drop ins" are not really drop ins. There is a lot that needs to happen. That said, after a season sailing with them they have changed our life and i dont regret spending the money at all. Ryan

I enjoyed your video a lot. The cost information was good even though I suppose it will differ somewhat depending upon where you are. I wondered about something. In the first part of the video, you mentioned that neither of you had any sailing experience when you purchased your boat. I wondered, how long it took you to become competent at sailing. I'm not sure I heard you correctly, but when you were talking about sleeping capacity I think you said that your other stateroom was for guests or crew. So did you or do you hire someone to go with you? Lastly, I"m looking at a Beneteau Windswept right now. It's a 42' foot boat and like you, I think that the finish is superior.

Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink. Too many places it is dodgy. Once in your tanks they are dodgy too. Get that watermaker. unlimited water that you know is safe is priceless.
We may have something in the works for this season... I don’t want to jinx it, but 2019 may be the season we start producing our own water. Maybe. Hopefully, we can give more details early March :) /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing Can't agree more. Also go for a high output one so to reduce the time you need to recharge the tanks. Gives you complete independence and freedom from the marinas (£140 euros a night Mahon, Menorca July 2018 Crazy!). You need a massive amount of solar to power one so also suggest a generator (min 4KW), one that expels water under the boat rather from the exhaust so not to annoy your neighbours when at anchor. You can also run the water heater and charge the batteries at the same time. Running your main engine without load is not a good thing and noisy. Interested how you get on with your lithium and solar upgrade. We have 550 of solar which runs most things (except hot water and watermaker) and replaced all batteries with lead acid (575ah) which cost approx a grand. Logic being that if these last 5 years then I can replace for less than lithium. Also concerned about them exploding :(.
Bravo! Not all that expensive using your numbers . If you could mention what your food costs are that would be very helpful . Granted food can vary in price country to country and by appetite but just an idea would help. Our food spend monthly is around $500
Yeah, we stayed away from "food" costs and such, cause it is so individual and varies a lot from country to country. Honestly, we could eat on 100€ a month if we wanted, but... I'm french, food is high on the list of priorities when it comes to budgeting ;)
We'll do another video one of these days in which we talk about the cost of living on a boat, and how we resonate with our budget.
But you are right, if you compare boat living expenses with living in our downtown apartment in Stockholm, we're living cheap! ;)

None of the mass production cruiser yachts have decent handholds these days. They are built for the holiday charter market and sitting at anchor or in a marina. Old boats were much narrower so you didn't have those wide open spaces to be thrown across and they often had upright posts at the end of the galley and chart table. You could always add some rails to the roof, depending on strength of the moulding, I suppose.

Just love that plaque at the beginning... made me laugh as we've fallen completely into that trap! Boats are completely irrational it seems and make otherwise rational adults go all weak and jelly like... The watermaker was at the top of our list though, once installed you'll wonder how you did without it.

Your boat has a greater chance to flip over because of the flat bottom. The bulb type is more stable.
For me, Polar Seal is in the range of super mega yacht. I don't ever see something as large and luxurious in my future. Then again, I do not plan on a full time live aboard
A question my wife and I have is banking and mail how is it handled? Credit cards, phone & mail? Is most of it done over the internet? Income made to direct deposit to your bank, I would think...
Hi Jim, Its a good question and its complex and different for each. many of our bills go to our internet banking. Our mail is picked up by a neighbor and is scanned to us... this is great but not without challenges (though we have awesome neigbors)... maybe people change their mailing address to family or friends house.
Most of our IT/banking is done with Swedish institutions which is light years ahead in terms of being able to do almost everything via the web, which is helpful. In short... you really have to plan ahead... i ordered new credit cards a year before they expired because i was going to be home and could pick them up. Feel free to mail if you have more questions.
One of the big questions that you didn't address is if the VAT was already paid or not. I guess if you bought it in Sweden, not sure what their VAT tax is compared to the EU, but if you are primarily sailing around in EU countries, then I'm under the impression that there are time limits on how long you can stay without paying VAT before you have to leave the EU. Or does that not matter if you paid VAT in Sweden, so long as you can document it for EU purposes? The reason I ask is that it seems like there are quite a few could boats like yours that are advertised at seemingly reasonable prices, for example in Croatia. One of the main distinguishing characteristics in trying to compare and evaluate them is whether or not VAT has been paid on them or not. The reason why I'm trying to understand this question is because I'm contemplating the options that if, for example, I were to buy one in Croatia and then spend the summer sailing around Greece near my mother's house over there, then, if the VAT has not been paid, I might be looking at having to do an Atlantic passage to the Med, to get out of the EU region for long enough to avoid having to pay the EU VAT on it. Of course, that wouldn't necessarily be a problem if you get a boat where the VAT has already been paid. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The VAT question is an interesting one. Most of the boats for sale without VAT in the Med are former charter boats, which we've stayed away from. We wanted to buy a used boat that was privately owned, and the VAT was paid on the boat that we bought (which makes our life easier in Europe, cause as you mention, there's only so long you can navigate in Europe without VAT paid on your boat). Generator is needed for a water maker, Dive compresser and AC in the tropics when you need relief! 12 VDC Motors are not reliable. Thanks for the video.
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. I have to respectfully disagree with the statement. DC motors are just fine, its ensuring you have enough HP to get the job done. Lithium is a nice compliment to 12v watermakers as the voltage will not drop off under the high loads that the 12v motor will take... thus the reason I'm excited to try. There are a number of 12v systems out there that do work and work well enough for people without the space or budget for a generator.
That said if you are going to run AC, dive compressor and watermaker, yes... generator is the way to go. Ryan
Ryan & Sophie Sailing 12volts do work! 24volts even better along with 32volt. I've used them. For me it was Amp draw and replacement cost. 150 hrs a year is allot. For 120v and 220 no issue! One Yacht I crewed I spent so much time replacing 12 volt motors. Heads, Macerators, bilge pumps, fresh water pumps like a Merry go round!

First you made plans to leave Stockholm and make the Atlantic circuit and return in a year or a year and a half. Then you changed that to go to the Mediterranean and spend a few years there, but that didn’t work out either. At this point it sounds like you combined the two and planned to stay out there longer. Then Covid came in and threw all the cards in the air! Right? :-)
Nice boats BUT slam to windward in any sort of seaway , but overall very well built boats , check the bulkhead to hull joins some times as can be a weak point...Enjoy life is not a rehearsal.The 2007,8 46 is a better boat, same easy sailing systems & not a lot more cash for your bang .

Hello! Thank you for this excellent vid. Very insightful and well presented. The Beneteau is indeed excellent for what you are doing and will be doing in the next years, as you say yourself. You budget items make sense except for the marina fees. I find it excessive to spend 600€ a month for that, albeit I understand that one must sometimes. Furthermore, this is an issue in the med where the marina fees are out of proportion and reason. In some places, you might be asked to pay 150€ per night for your 40 footer. Years ago, I was asked to pay 240€ in Porto Cervo for my 47

I am thinking about the lithium batteries and I am also thinking of moving away from the gas and installing an electric induction. The hassle of having to deal with gas bottles oánd adapting to a different format can be too much.
Anyway, I agree with you that centre cockpit can be great and I am looking forward to your Amel report (been following svdelos for years now).

The 600€/month we spent were mostly because during the first part of our trip (Stockholm to Northern Spain), there was nowhere to anchor. In the second part of last season (Northern Spain - Almerimar), the marinas got very expensive very quickly, and in spite of spending a lot more time at anchorage, the bill remained high.
Lithium is one upgrade I am really excited about. Especially since we are also upgrading our inverter, and we'll be able to power pretty much everything we have on the boat. I'd love an electric stove and oven! But for now, we're doing enough upgrades 😅

You guys should look at centre cockpit boats, particularly if you're not super experienced sailors, get rid of the bendytoe, and look at Hallberg Rassy's, you'll find a 42' centre cockpit, aft master en suite, best cruising yachts by some distance, a 38' boat owned by a Dane sat out 60+ knots at anchor in Spain along with 4 other cruising yachts, hls Hallberg Rassy was the only survivor, for 100k US you'll find a bomb.
jonno Rousseau you clearly didn’t watch the video where they address the costs of buying a much better built center cockpit boat like a Hallberg Rassy.
Hi Jonno. Thanks for the Comment. We do see a lot of value in Center cockpit boats however there are also a ton of benefits with our current Benny. As Darren pointed out we have a few videos on this and our dream boat would be a Rassy 44 however its a bit our of reach for us. For now, Beneteau makes a great boat and this one we will most likely keep for some time. - Ryan

If you can by a yacht like that, I don’t think money is to much of a problem for you, compared to most people, I’m just saying.
Hi Chess, we get comments like this often however what we have learned being out sailing is that no one knows each others financial situation. We have seen sailors with small crapy boats with tons of cash and people with large boats whom one might think is rich but is not. Truth is, we have to budget very carefully every month for this experience. Without rental income from our apparent and working essentially two full time jobs neither of us could do this with the boat we have. -Ryan
