- THIS IS MY WAY OF MAKING HOMEMADE HAKIENE. BY NO MEAN IT IS THE ORIGINAL RECIPE.
INGREDIENTS:
For the Filling:
400g Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls
1 cup / 50g Diced Raw Prawn
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
1 1/2 Cup / 75 g Shredded Cabbage
1 1/2 cup / 75 g Shredded Carrot
1 Tbsp Garlic Paste
1 cup / 50 g Mushroom
1 Tbsp fish Sauce Or Depending of your taste
Spring Onion
1 Tsp Dark Soy Sauce
For the Batter:
1 Cup / 150 g Plain White Flour
2 Tbsp Cornflour/Cornstarch/Potato Starch Or Tapioca Flour
Water Depending of the consistency
Pinch Yellow food Colouring.
Hakien is a Mauritian Chinese appetiser very much appreciated in Mauritius. it is similar to spring rolls or nems with vegetable, chicken, prawns or any filling of your choice. They are delicious and usually eaten with chilli sauce.
This is an special episode , I am helping all Muslims around the world to get some ideas, what to prepare for Iftaar Time for in the month of Ramadan .

You can easily find them in any of your local supermarkets, specifically in the Asian section.

Maybe the oil wasn't hot enough. Also, cook it in small batches - as the more Hakiene you add to the oil, the cooler the oil will become.
OR
You try this batter Recipe
125g cornflour
1/2 tsp bicarb. of soda
250 mls icy cold sparkling water or Soda
1 egg
And follow the same process :)

I tried this recipe today n instead of dipping once in ze batter i did twice n it was delicious. For the crispness u need to fry on high flame.

It's rice paper, not plastic. And it doesn't taste like much.
