    Great video. I use several a mount lenses with the laea3

    I have a wonderful collection of A mount lenses. Every lens with an internal motor that I have tried works great and I even use some screw drive lenses like my Tamron 90mm Macro and Sigma 17-35 but with manual focus. $250 for both vs $3000+ for E mount. I have the LA-EA4 as well but rarely use it because it’s AF is lacking and only uses a 15 point AF sensor in the adaptor. Tamron USM lenses and Sigma HSM lenses also work with the EA3 and some are fantastic and cheap.

    Thank you Marcus for that video.
    I also bought a LA-EA4 Adapter for my old Minolta screw driven lenses. To have auto-focus and eye-focus you can refurbish that adapter with an new platine. Gary Friedman has a video about this feature called Monster-Adapter.
    Now I can use all of my lenses with a new A7R3a body. The A77ii and the A99ii are still in use.
    Regards

    I mainly shoot old Minolta Maxxum (A Mount) lenses on my A73, I love the unique look it provides, though you miss out on some of the newer technology and focus points.

    I'm surprised this doesn't have more views.
    Great video!
    I was considering this combo after my Tamron 70-300 SP died after a fall onto concrete.
    It's shocking to me what many photographers consider "budget" friendly, looking at the cost of many lenses now.
    This is a great mid price option and could probably bring better image quality than the Tamron 70-300 Di III RXD.
    I've gotten the Tammy as I needed a lens quickly before a major trip and only had limited time and really wanted some sort of tele-photo (I also ended up buying a new Sony A7III as my A99 was also hurt).
    To be fair, the Tamron does have the advantages of being lighter (light travel lens) and supporting fast continuous AF in video as I do occasionally get to record wildlife and it works remarkably well with the IBIS alone.
    I also use a Sigma 150-500 via the MC-11 adapter which also works really well (though I need to play with the image stabilisation as that can behave funny in video).
    All that being said, this is a great combination and I do occasionally see these at remarkably low prices.
    I might snatch up a long prime or longer SSM lens if they do come up.

      Hi there. Thank you. Yes, the LA-EA3 and A-Mount option is larger, and heavier, but....it's what I could afford at the time (2019), and, the SAL70300 lens really has produced some high quality results for me. I'd like a smaller, lighter telephoto, but, I just don't have a true "need" for it right now, so, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! And I've actually dropped my Sony A-Mount 70-300 at least once pretty good, and other than cracking the plastic threads on the front where a filter would screw in, the fall didn't hurt it, it still works great!! (and the crack doesn't seem to affect the lens-cap attachment much either, which is good). And yes, like you said, and I said, my combo doesn't do continuous autofocus in video, but, I just don't use it for that, or haven't had a need-to. Thank you so much for the comments and info, cheers!

    Most interesting. I own the a99 with a lot of the very best minolta and zeiss a mount lenses. But I want to upgrade either to the a99ii or the a7r iv (or v) with the LA EA 5 adapter. My question is, does the adapter work well? Is this the right adaptor?

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi there. The LA-EA3 worked great with my Sony A7iii and my 70-300G (SSM) lens. As shown in the video, CONTINUOUS autofocus would not work in video-mode, but I didn't often use my 70-300 lens for video anyway, I used it mostly for photos. It's also possible I didn't have some settings correct, but, again, I didn't need continuous autofocus in video with this setup.
      The LA-EA5 is the newest adapter and I do not own it, so I can't fully say, but from other forums it seems the LA-EA5 is an LA-EA3 without the additional (bulky) tripod foot. I kind of wish I had an EA5, as I mostly do NOT like the bulky tripod foot/plate on the LA-EA3.

    I have an A7ll and was looking to purchase a second hand Sony minolta AF 70-200 F/2.8 D SSM it would automatically come with an LA-AE3 adapter. Do you think that would work well. I’ve looked everywhere for a video on an explanation and thought you might be able to help

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 6 měsíci

      Hi there, sounds like that would be a good option. If the lens is sold with the adapter then it should be fine. The LA-EA3 works well with the SSM lenses which mine is an SSM lens and your notes state the lens you’re looking at is also an SSM lens.
      Continuous auto focus during video recording may or may not work, it kind of depends on the lens. But I don’t use this adapter with my long zoom lens for video work, mostly just for photos. And in photo mode, everything works great through the adapter, single autofocus and aperture control all work really well

    Can I use sony 70-300mm A / on SonyA6000 with the LA-EA3?

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 2 lety

      Hi there. According to Sony and some other posts that I've read, yes, the LA-EA3 should work just fine on an A6000, you'll just get the typical, more narrow field of view from your lens if your A-mount lens is meant for a full frame sensor.
      I don't see anything from Sony that says it doesn't work, I think the only difference is the field of view.

    Does the Sony adapter only work on Sony Lenses?

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes. The LA-EA adapters adapt older Sony “A-Mount” lenses to newer Sony “E-Mount” cameras. So, only Sony.
      The physical-metal connection points are all different between manufacturers and series’ of lenses.
      For example, if you need to adapt a Canon “EF” mount lens to a Sony “E-Mount” Camera… this adapter would NOT work, you would have to find a specific adapter that will adapt “Canon EF” to Sony E.
      And keep in mind that not all Lens adapters will allow certain features of the lens to work. For example, sometimes autofocus won’t work through the adapter, etc. It just depends on your specific lens and your specific camera

    Hey there. Would you recommend this setup for event photography

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 2 lety

      Hi there Karl. While this setup with the adapter certainly does work, my only experience is with my 70-300 (variable-aperture) 4.5-6.3 lens. With that particular lens, darker environments mean higher ISO's to keep the shutter speed high. But, in this price range of $500-$700, most lenses are going to be variable aperture and usually higher aperture (less light) than most lenses that professionals use for event-photography. I think if I were going to photograph events professionally, I'd invest in at least an F4 lens with a constant aperture, but I'd certainly go 2.8 if you can afford it. .....but, sometimes those zoom ranges with constant apertures are ONLY 70-200 (f2.8 or f4).....and, when I got this lens I wanted as much reach as I could afford, so I got this combination.
      But, I have taken plenty of photos with this lens combination and my LA-EA4 adapter, I've even taken photos at small concerts, plenty of live-events that I have been a part of, but none of it for "professional" work......aka, I wasn't asked nor was I paid for it, much of it I take photos to help social media for the company I work for......but, I still get some great photos!!
      You could try finding older A-Mount constant F4 or f2.8 lenses though. This combo with the LA-EA4 is definitely a hard-sell for sure, given that Sony, Tamron, and Sigma have come out with a LOT of competing lenses in this focal-range lately that are native E-Mount AND priced very closely to the 70-300 A-Mount lens and LA-EA4 adapter together.
      But, I've also always just ordered or purchased with retailers that have a good return policy so if I am not happy with it, I can swap it out.
      I found this 70-300 used on B&H, and, again, it's been a great lens for me, and you can see a lot of photos I've taken with it on my instagram account if you like:
      instagram.com/marcushutsell/?hl=en
      I hope some of this info was helpful, cheers!

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před 2 lety

      Hi there Tanvir. It *should be able to work with the A7Riii, as it's just an A-Mount to E-Mount converter, and, as I said, it works perfectly with my A7iii. the A7riii, although NOT the a7iii, is just a higher megapixel camera, and still a Sony, and still in the same "family" of Sony cameras, so, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

      Hi T-Bo. You probably need the Sony LA-EA5 adapter. I do not own it, so I haven't used it, but the specs of that adapter state it works for all A-Mount lenses and all of the functionality of autofocus from the camera works as well.
      Again, I have not used it, but, it would probably be your solution.

      No, it does not affect the aperture.

    • @MarcusHutsell
      @MarcusHutsell  Před měsícem

      But I guess to expand, you can still CONTROL the aperture of the lens through the camera's aperture wheel, but it's not a focal reducer, etc, won't affect anything like that, it's just a spacer that puts the lens optics in the right place for a mirrorless camera's sensor.......with electronics so that the lens can still respond to changes from the camera like autofocus, aperture control, custom buttons on the lens, etc.
