  • We review the Sony LA-EA 5 A-mount to E-mount adapter to to test performance with old A-mount lenses. If you're a Sony user with A-mount glass it's a great way to use those older lenses on an E-mount body.

    worth mentioning that the LA-EA2 and 4 both support video (they force f/3.5 and 50 shutter for some reason but they focus quickly/ accurately in most circumstances).

    I have an A99ii and a bunch of vintage Minolta film lenses, three Tamron lenses and some really good A- mounts lenses, such as the 70-400 GSM II and Sony Zeiss 24-70mm. I bought the A7 IV and the 200-600mm and the LA-EA5 Adapter. Frankly, I've been amazed. Shooting my A-mount glass -- all of it -- on the A7 IV is just the same as it was with the same glass on the A99ii. I shot the Blue Angels using my 70-400mm and got as good or better than I got with the 200-600mm. The Tamron lenses work great, too. The old screw-drive Minolta lenses take a bit longer to focus but still do just as well as they do on the A99ii. The Minolta people who developed lenses like the 25-70mm probably never dreamed it could do eye-autofocus, but now it can.
    A-mount cameras are dead but the A-mount lenses live with the LA-EA5 adapter. Thank you, Sony.
    I rarely do video so I have no comment on video performance.

    I have the adapter on pre-order, can't wait to test it out. The 85 and 135 are really slow focusing lenses I never would use them for running shots even with the A99II, can't expect miracles from screw drive AF. Just being able to use them on the A7RIV though with live tracking and eye AF is worth it, more than enough for me to finally switch over.

    • @bobdriscoll3310
      @bobdriscoll3310 Před 3 lety +8

      I have the 85 1.4 Sony Zeiss and the Minolta 80-200 HS 2.8, both of which are screw drive. They both give amazing image quality on my A99ii, but the focus on the 85 is definitely slow (still awesome for portraits, especially with eye focus on hybrid af, just not for sports or action). The Minolta, however, while being a bit loud and clunky-sounding, is blazingly fast, so it's not really a limitation of the screw drive. The SSM is smoother and maybe even a tiny bit faster, but the screw drive CAN be super fast - it's just not on the Sony Zeiss lenses.

    • @VBITS97
      @VBITS97 Před rokem +2

      I can't tell the difference shooting the Blue Angels with the A99ii or A7 IV. Grabbed focus and kept it for an extended overhead pass at high speed. The LA-EA4 does not use the camera's auto-focus system. It uses circa A65 technology inside the adapter.

    Looking forward to getting the new adapter. If it's an improvement on both the two previous adapters it will be useful. If the Zeiss 85mm is anything like my Minolta 85mm f1.4 G lens it is not a high speed focusing lens. I still find my a-mount lenses useful for my filming projects (although I'm not filming fast movie subjects). As it seems Sony are no longer making any more a-mount bodies I hope they make e-mount versions of their a77 and a99 bodies. I see no reason why they shouldn't.

    It's a huge miss that Sony couldn't use this adapter to take advantage of their A mount lenses. Sony could've built a variable ND, focal reducer, or CPL inside the adapter to satisfy videographers while boosting their lens sale. Just look at what Canon did.

  • @stephenhowe316
    @stephenhowe316 Před 3 lety +12

    We know continuous AF can work in video with A-mount adapters, because the EVF is a mini-video display when showing the Adapter working in Stills mode. If users connected a Ninja, they would be able to record it. So Sony's decision not to allow Continuous AF video, internally, is a deliberate 'cripple' .

      But the lens focuses wide open, so the video output would have to be wide open too. On LA-EA4 these lenses are forced into F3.5 in video AF, if you get Monster modified LA-EA4 adapter you loose video shooting and SSM compatibility.

    I was very curious to see a comparison against A99II which will be the real test - is this adapter actually do something. From what I can see in this video - A mount is still dead.
    PS you had to test the AF speed at Hi+ andhere is why - on my A7rIII the native Zeiss 55 1.8 is tracking well only on Hi+, all the other options work much worse. I suppose that Sony made some software mistakes writing the code AGAIN and the lower burst speeds do not work well with every lens.

      Autofous doesn't work in video mode, it's been mentioned 3 times in this video and you can read it in the adapter description. You could in theory record the live view mode while continous autofocusing in the still mode, but you're only limited to the widest aperture in the lens used during focusing.

    I'm a Canon fan so pardon me if I say I'm surprised it took Sony 3 products to make a SLR lens to mirrorless body adaptor work, even the end result doesn't perform that good. I'm well aware Canon in the other hand came in the mirrorless segment late, but they make EF-EOS M and EF-EOS R adaptor just once each and they work. I have an RP and borrowed an EF 70-200 f4L IS USM (a 2006 design mind you) with an official Canon adaptor and the AF just.. work? Not as snappy as I'd hoped (probably because it's old), but it is accurate, and work with the various AF modes too.

      The [Lens Comp] (Lens Compensation) function does not work.
      Depending on shooting conditions, the brightness of the picture may not be even.Set the [Front Curtain Shutter] function to [Off].
      If you attach the [A-mount lens] using the Mount Adaptor, MF assist function does not work automatically when you turn the focus ring. You can enlarge the image by selecting [Focus Magnifier] function or [MF Assist] function to any key in the "Custom Key Settings".
      Shake compensation is available with 3-axis(Pitch/Yaw/Roll) by SteadyShot INSIDE.
      To use auto focus, the system software must be upgraded to Ver. 1.20 or later.
      Although you can perform auto focusing, it is sometimes difficult to focus on a subject using this function when you are shooting dark scenes or when a subject is located at the corners of the screen or is significantly out of focus.
      When you perform continuous shooting in the Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode while the focus mode is set to AF-C, the focus does not track a subject. To enable AF continuous shooting by setting continuous shooting to Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode, the system software must be upgraded to Ver. 1.20 or later.
      When you perform continuous shooting in the Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode while the focus mode is set to AF-C, the speed of continuous shooting can be slower.

  • @brianwalton2602
    @brianwalton2602 Před 3 lety

    Unless they update the firmware the old adapters are anything but obsolete. The LAEA5 won't even autofocus with the fast majority of A-Mount Glass on the vast majority of E-mount bodies. If you can afford a $3500 A7Riv then you likley won't want to be using the A-Mount glass due to resolution limitations (I own lots of A-Mount lenses). This becomes an amazing addition if it becomes fully compatible with the more reasonably priced E-Mount bodies which is more in line with what A-Mount users are going to switch to. Has Sony released anything indicating broader future compatiblity? It is odd that they would release a product with honestly a super narrow compatibility range. Give me one for the A7ii with basic auto-focus and I'll jump on board.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews Před 3 lety

      So far only 2 bodies support screw drive AF, and they happen to be the more expensive ones A7rIV and A6600. Neither camera interests me personally
      Unless some of the other cameras get firmware to support the new adapter with screw drive lenses, the adapter seems like an expensive upsell strategy. I get the old ones A6000 and A7ii not working with it, but the A7c and A7sIII evidently don't support it either and they're new models. I'd rather stick with A mount at this time and just buy used gear, and limited support adapter isn't very interesting unless you happen to own both of those cameras. If the A7iii doesn't get firmware for it, that's a big miss for many A mount users (ie the kind of body many would use), otherwise you're stuck with the LA-EA4 for that body. And you're back to square one ie get better AF off native A Mount bodies (even the first gen A77, A99) and the A77ii is miles ahead of the 15 point AF on that adapter
