- Actually it is the best adapter for older Sony A-Mout to E-Mount lenses but unfortunately there are big problems which I will show in this video.

I have a a77 with lots of old Minolta and Sony A mount lenses. Because Sony have made an adapter like this I will be hard for me not to choose a new FE mount Sony camera when I upgrade. If there was not adapter and I would have to start from scratch on all my lenses I could chance to Canon, Nikon or what ever. So it is pretty smart to make the adapter to ensure that oldtime Mintola/Sony shooters stay in the family.
Thanks for your comment. 👍 Just because there are new E-mount lenses doesn't mean that they are always better than the old ones. There are many old A-mount lenses that have a very good quality and it is exactly right to get this adapter to be able to continue using the great A-Mount lenses and not have to spend a lot of money on new E-Mount lenses.
I have a full set of Minolta lenses that I use on my Sony Alpha 77 body! Instead of buying a A mount full frame body, I wanted to buy a E mount full frame body because that is the way tech is going.
Thank you for your comment. 👍 you will get a huge improvement in autofocus and skin colors if you will switch to e mount camera.
I'm not the only one I see, I also run the A77 mark ii and it even have eye detection through a minolta lens from 1996.
The day I upgrade I for sure will keep the glass and change the body. Love my newest (oldest?) lens 80-200 2.8 from Minolta, mint condition 👌😎
@@JnR-Vlogging it’s a big, but still a very good lens 😉👍
@@dawa5581agreed, would have been nice with a slightly smaller one, but I think it's shorter than the Canon 70-200 2.8 I had before I switched to Sony. No fact checking, just of memory
Thank you, I agree with you that it is a great product but it's working with only few recent bodies is a HUGE limitation!! I already bought it, so don't know what to do with it as of now!
Thank you very much for your comment! 👍 I don't understand Sony's firmware policy either. It would be great if all Sony camera owners could use this great adapter. What kind of camera do you have?
Thanks for this review 👍
You are welcome.
I'm planning on getting the A6700 with LA-EA5 because all my lenses are Minolta G
Thank you for your comment 👍
With this combination you have a lot of fun.
The limited support mostly wiped out my interest in staying with Sony at the time. If it worked on the A7III or A6400 bodies it might be different. I think I had over 20 lenses for A mount, at one time. I worked out the cost of buying an A7IV and adapter and I could just as well invest in another system (albeit hassle of selling off A mount gear/lenses). The final issue was no video AF, which is an artificial limitation. Even the LAEA4 can do video AF (with the 3.5 aperture etc). It seems only the A7RIV works with the EA4/EA5 adapters. EA4 is pretty much useless on the new cameras as it won't AF with them, and the bulk/limited AF points made it a very basic solution (had one for a while and sold it)
Looking back yes you're right they didn't have to make the adapter, but also they also didn't say anything about A Mount even when asked by the press (ghosted their A mount users in effect), I wasn't very comfortable with that ethos myself. Mind you Canon did the same with the EOS-M
Thank you for your comment. I also don't understand why Sony doesn't release all older cameras for the adapter. The autofocus performance is really good and there are really many good A-mount lenses that you could continue to use.
@@dawa5581 I suppose they want people to either buy the more expensive cameras that work with the adapter, or not to make it too attractive otherwise they would lose lens sales? Probably the reason video AF isn't supported either. Cameras like the A6100 and 6400 has the same hardware/processor as the 6600 which does work with it, so they limited it's use, and it was iMO intentional. No other bodies got firmware updated just the few at launch.
Some stuck around, but for me the limitations and poor body support meant it wasn't worth it, the video AF was the final deal breaker too. The adapter works fine I've used it, not quite as much torque as a dedicated body, but good enough. People do still buy the Minolta lenses, because there are some great deals out there.
I just got kinda screwed because I have a Sony A74 and ordered by mistake an A mount lens I can't return. Gather info on lens adapter to see what can I do with it.
@@JPMNRB I'm very sorry that you can no longer return the lens. However, with this adapter, the A-mount lens will work very well on the A7IV.
The Sigma mc-11 lets you use Canon ef-lenses on Sony cameras. So far all of them work, even an old Sigma lens for Canon ef that won't even work on my 6d anymore. Full functionality for photos, and very quick too. It's a shame Sony cripples these adapters because it is only software, and they could be easily updated. And I never understood the mirror in the ea4 too, especially when looking to the mc-11.
Thank you for your comment. 👍 You're absolutely right, I don't understand Sony's firmware policy either. I also have the Sigma mc-11 adapter and have already made a video about it. It works great and you can always update it with the latest firmware.
The LA-EA5 is the cornerpiece in my hybrid setup with two Minolta Dynax 7 film bodies and a Sony α7R mk V because it was crucial for me to get a system where film and digital cameras could use the same lenses.
As far as I remember, I knew about AF not being available for video before I bought the adapter but it certainly seems odd, considering that video AF is, indeed, available for Canon EF lenses using either the Sigma MC-11 or the Metabones EF to E Mount Adapter (Mark V). I would be ready to pay for a firmware update that made this possible for the LA-EA5.
I also find it strange, as you mention, that Sony has not updated the list of supported cameras (since 2020?) as new models have been released the last few years; I would expect that, for example, the α7C mk II / α7C R can use the adapter and retain AF.
Still, for me it is an indispensable piece of gear for the reason mentioned above.
Thanks for your comment. 👍 I think you misunderstood me or I expressed myself incorrectly. I mentioned that it is the best Sony A-mount adapter. I just don't understand why the cameras before 2020 don't work. From 2020 the cameras work with this adapter. The A6700 as well as the A7CII. But I don't understand why Sony doesn't release the cameras before 2020 for the adapter and you have to switch to the older LA-EA4. This could easily be solved with a firmware update.
Auto focus only works with the lens are SAM/SSM
Thank you for your comment. 👍 Unfortunately I have not tried it with other lenses.
Auto focus works with newer models for lens without motor. I’m using a6700 and SAL1680Z. Focusing is really fast and accurate
It clearly states in the Sony info the limitations of this device, which cameras, which type lenses are supported and the modes that do or do not function. The LA-EA4 works well with A mount screw drive lenses, and, can be modified with the Monster Adaptor kit. Use the attached links for greater info on these adaptors: czcams.com/video/mXsV3UJcwdw/video.html czcams.com/video/5FvusonVmmM/video.html czcams.com/video/Xy4GZURBkF0/video.html
Thank you for your comment. 👍 I also read the information on the Sony website and that's why I bought this adapter. However, it doesn't always seem to work with the cameras. I don't know if Sony have subsequently changed anything in the firmware but now some cameras no longer work that previously worked according to Sony.
I want to punch sonys marketing department for this, engineers done it well
Thanks for your comment. 👍 Sometimes I don't understand Sony's strategy. Of course they want to make a lot of money. But they would have greater customer loyalty if there were rmore firmware releases.
@@dawa5581 exactly, I would love a smaller adapter on my a7II, so will see maybe will upgrade to A7Rmk4, but sony getting nothing from me, this will be used :D

I also read this on the Sony website but it didn't work on my A7III, A6400 and ZV-E10. I had also previously loaded the latest firmware everywhere. I really don't understand what Sony was thinking.
@@dawa5581 It works with all of these bodies with lenses which have built in AF motor. However, the screw drive only works with the newer model bodies. I guess you said it in the conclusion - Sony has no interest in adapting older cheaper lenses, they will at least push you to purchase the new cameras if you want to ;)
@@tpolakov you are absolutely right 😉👍
@@tpolakov Oh this super useful to me that it can on any of those cameras operate the SSM type lenses. I have a A7S II but will eventually buy the latest, and it looks like in doing so, the rest of that adapter will become fully functional and allow me to use my 2 screw AF lenses at that time.
I was planning on the EA3, but if the EA5 acts like the EA3 on older cameras until such time its on the latest, that is ok with me.
Thanks for the info.
@@armycord1695 Just keep in mind that the video limitation remains - it will not autofocus any lens on any body when shooting video :( Which kinda makes sense for screw drive lenses - as the focusing noise would be picked up, but for SSM it should probably be doable.
