    Danny's work is the reason that I decided to get into video and motion design. I saw "Catch Me If You Can" when I was young, and while the movie was pretty good, that title design just hooked me. It was so much cooler than just fading names on and off screen over some footage. I knew that's what I wanted to do. Hearing from a hero like this was really inspiring. Thanks!

    The original Blade Runner and the newest 2049, are two of my all time most favorite movies! How insanely cool it must've been to work on those! Excellent interview, and much appreciation to Danny for sharing his story! Immensely intriguing to hear both of your views and accounts, of some of the early beginnings of computers, and how they altered the landscape of art, graphics, design and typography etc. forever! Looking forward to part 2!! 🔪🏃

    You guys, this episode made me cry in a nail shop. I can relate to Danny's story of being the older of two siblings being abandoned by a father, and filling the void for years after that with nothing good. And being lost. For a really long time.
    What's crazy is that, when my mom immigrated here, one of the first jobs she had was as a nighttime janitor. She couldn't afford childcare so she had to take me with her.
    One of the places she worked at was Digital Kitchen here in Capitol Hill. My jaw nearly dropped to the floor when you played that Six Feet Under reel. I remember standing by the elevator at 1am with our cleaning supplies, watching that exact reel replay over and over on a small display by the entrance door. I remember every square foot of that office, both floors. After I would finish helping empty the cans, I read all of the magazines that were out. I remember the endless sea of Mac computers with loads of fascinating graphics (at the time they were working on Reese's ads) and one computer in particular always had a black bird of paradise as the screensaver. I remember the rigs that were set up for time-lapse shoots, the soundproofed lounge with VICE spreads, and the really scary backroom with all the labeled tapes. I loved that space and the energy in it, but never ever thought I could have the creative capacity to work in a place like that.
    Since then, I've fallen in love with design and the people in it. Trying to define a self-teaching path for myself in all of the ambiguity would have been impossible without the Futur and all of its guests.
    I appreciate Danny's story about how he started by taking any opportunity to learn. Tomorrow I'm in the final round of interviewing for an entry-level position at the best UX firm here in Seattle to get my foot in the door to design, and I had really been on the fence about it because it's a sacrifice of time that I could use to self-teach. But on the flip side, the opportunity for mentorship and exposure to possibilities and inspiration is worth its weight in gold, as Danny has demonstrated. This video has really cemented my approach to my meeting tomorrow.
    Thank you Chris, for clarity, as always.
    And thank you for your vulnerability Danny. I still can't speak a word about my dad without feeling a tightening in my throat and a welling in my eyes. I hope that part of your heart will someday heal.
    Takeaways:
    11:20 Learn your tools. Read the manuals. Learn the hotkeys.
    13:30 Stand out by identifying what everyone else is not doing, and use that to your advantage.
    16:30 Learn to find opportunity in everything. Art school was too expensive, so Danny took a job in Oakland at a sign company in '89. The work was bland but he learned a lot about the distance of lettering, juxtaposition, etc.
    19:15 Make personal projects and share it.
    20:30 Find a mentor to work for to level up.
    21:14 BE PASSIONATE AND ENTHUSIASTIC. There's a chance this matters more than anything else.
    22:58 Follow what makes you happy. This life is so short, why would you waste it on something you hate?
    23:45 How do you know you are meant to do this? Self doubt will always be there, but whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right.
    25:04 Study the stories of titans like Elon Musk who persevered through a lot of failures.
    26:54 I'd rather try it and fail rather than to not try it an wonder my whole life, "What if I did that?"
    30:35 How did Danny learn software? Read the manual. It sucks but you need to do it to gain that advantage. Learning how to use shortcuts will save you a lot of time in the long run.
    33:35 Self sufficiency and delegation are critical to learn.
    35:35 Find one thing and strive to learn as much as you can, go DEEP!
    38:03 If you find something you love, go into it as deeply as you can despite however bad you may think you are at it.
    39:51 The struggle of the process has the potential to turn you into something greater than what you are.
    41:06 It's good practice to work through hard things because the reward is so sweet. Hardships are a reality check that will show you who you really are, and gives you the opportunity to build character.

    • @DannyYount
      @DannyYount Před 5 lety

      Having no direction is very difficult as you know Avian. And for me personally a bigger problem than I could solve on my own. But through many small and miraculous events I was given by God the ability to "see" suddenly - and to start the long and arduous task of rebuilding. And I was able to overcome by absorbing myself in scripture (to develop character) and many new friends that helped me through that period. Once I became strong in those foundational areas I pursued a strong course of learning - applying myself at every task I could excel in. It took a long time but it paid off.

    • @avian6051
      @avian6051 Před 5 lety

      @@DannyYount Thank you for your response Danny. Everything you say seems to resonate deeply with me. In the last six months of immersing myself in the teachings of Jordan B Peterson (who uses anecdotes from scripture to unveil the reason for developing character), I feel like I've been given the ability to "see" as well. There have been so many small, almost serendipitous events that I have the ability to recognize as a blessing to redirect my life. Now I see both myself, life and purpose very differently. Thank you for being an example, I hope to meet you someday! Dan Pepper speaks so highly of you.

    I feel like I've plateaued or am stuck in a rut with graphic design, especially with the corporate stuff that pays the bills. I wanna transition to motion design and title design - one of my original inspirations for becoming a designer in the first place. I'd love to see some masterclass or tutorial type stuff around this. Thank you, The Futur, keep this awesome work up. You're making the world a better place!

  • @lukawalli
    @lukawalli Před 6 lety

    Great video. I think the main problem when you're a creative person is, that you will NEVER be sure if the job you're doing is the right one. I did graphic design, copywriting, strategy, illustrating, ux/ui design, coding, video editing, filming, making music and so on, and I enjoyed most of my jobs, because I always need new stuff to learn and to do and I love trying out new things.
    I really get kinda angry nowadays when "the next gen" of "creatives" are treating the thing I love and they SHOULD love like a 9to5 job or less. They want to work 8h a day max, 3 days a week, get paid double, only work on nice projects and become creative director at 20. They don't even know how to use the tools properly, let alone talk to customers who pay their bills or take responsibility if they fuck up.
    Those people are not creative people, but people who think "being a creative person is cool". They are missing the three main ingredients you need when you're creative (aside from skill and talent): curiosity, humility and determination. Danny is a perfect example for this.
    just my two cents.

    As always great inspirational content. When I was 12, I called all the restaurants listed in local yellow pages. I asked each one if they would consider hiring a 12 year old. One restaurant thought my call was so interesting and said they would hire me if I got my parents to bring me in for interview. The restaurant was destroyed a few months later in hurricane Alicia 1983.
