      So lots of people on Fiverr will undercharge for two reasons 1. They live in a country with low cost of living, so they don't charge a lot compared to US designers, while making more than everyone in the same field in their country. 2. They are building a reputation and getting more reviews/ranking so they can increase prices later and still get reviews.

    • @3dvfxprofessor
      @3dvfxprofessor Před 3 lety +11

      @@Ericbomb The "cheap first and well paid later" idea will not work. It never did. It's a classic illusion in the creative business. Because in the age of digital revolution there will be always a cheaper (and better) fish. I just can recommend by experience to spend your engergy on convincing clients to get paid by value and not by time and focus on a reliable service and communication. All this needs a healthy life. If you are underpaid all the time you can compensate when your young but you get burned out by this over time for sure.

    • @calthyechild
      @calthyechild Před 3 lety +2

      @@3dvfxprofessor Sure it does. I started on Fiverr (which I don't recommend to any creatives unless you want to stand in the shadow of art thieves... last time I was on Fiverr it was to report two art thieves claiming my art is theirs) and now I work off my own portfolio, many key pieces of which were originally done on Fiverr for budget clients, for 5x-20x the rate I used to charge, depending on the product. :) Better to work for cheap than for nothing to get your portfolio set up. No one's going to pay a brand new artist $1000 off the hop. I had to demonstrate skill in my arena, by working with lower budget clients, to win jobs that paid me like that. I do hold there's a tier where it's not worth it to spend your time, unless you can whip it out in a couple of hours... but it's not unreasonable for a beginning artist to start with a minimum wage estimated rate. At least they're requesting payment rather than feeling flattered that someone 'let them enter their contest' or 'let them draw fanart for them'... like some new artists I see. Though I acknowledge burnout is a very real risk and I wish every day that every job I took was in that $500+ bracket, I still regularly take commissions for lower rates. Not unreasonably low rates, but not everyone has industry level money to spend on art, so while I feel it's more important to focus on negotiating big jobs, the littler ones make up a key part of my income... and even those little ones have clients who say "okay, I'll do that, but I have to save up for a month before I can afford to pay you." They deserve art too, just not quite the same level of intense service as the $500 or $800 or $1000 clients get.

      All of them are under priced, that's the problem with platfroms like this -- they're devaluing all of an industry. Take the 450 dollars over a few days and compare that to a salary. Can you live on that? If you're a business, your work 20 days a month is not guaranteed, lucky if you get a client, lucky if you work 10 days a month. The only people who benefit from this... not the client, not the designer, but the platform. Now think of the dude who created a good presentation, had a great concept and charged 135 minus the platform's percentage.

      I would have guessed the $135 guy to be worth $900 at least, and the most expensive one about $200. The cheapest designer did look like they put in the least effort.

      FRANKIE HARRIS I am currently studying graphic design in Pakistan. I work on Fiverr and have made very little money there. But I honestly don’t know where else to go. We don’t have PayPal here, hence very little access to online platforms. I really, truly wish someone out there could help me, just guide me a little with how to build a graphic design portfolio to be able to find remote jobs.

      Sorry I'm 4 months late to this comment, kinda just stumbled across this video randomly, but I wanted to agree with both you and PyR0. Similar to what PyR0 said, the $450 logo was beautiful in my opinion, such a lovely concept and very pretty. However, something that confused me was how Will completely contradicted himself (and I'm certainly no expert, so maybe there's something I'm missing). With all of them he criticized the logos for having too much depth and detail and then with the last one he praised it for having... a lot of depth and detail? Just didn't make sense to me and I thought it was weird. I personally love the design, but not for an app logo.

    No, that $450 logo looks more like a sleeping app logo and the design itself is not memorable. Also, it can't be a logo cause it's basically an illustration without real meaning. The $135 logo was WAY better.

      Your logo doesn’t have to show exactly what you do. It’s not a flyer or an advert. That’s why you build a brand, and you show who you are and explain what makes you different. So a meditation app doesn’t have to show someone meditating. That being said, the $135 logo was very successful - clean and modern and the presentation was great, and helped sell the logo. The $450 one was more memorable. Take away the stars and moon, brighten it up a bit and it would show relaxation and calm which is the purpose of meditation. Depends on the client.

      @@idntknow29 In my opinion, the logo $450 dollar is far superior to $135.. tho we appreciate the concept behind the 135$. When it comes to applications, visuals from $450 can easily capture the attention of the users in an instant. We can say that there is depth behind the origin of $135 and it's cheap yet in reality you don't have the time to explain the meaning and origin of it to the users. If i will see the $450 vs $150 dollar logo in my phone as an application, my eyes will be on the $450.

    Firstly, thank you for this video--with a degree in design, I find Fiver fascinating and infuriating. I love to see the spectrum, but honestly, as said a myriad times, the $135 guy way undersold himself (a.k.a. 'lowball') and did way more work than he needed. So, this is essentially what we compete with on Fiver. People who lowball and work way harder than they should to seal the deal. Way less than minimum wage as a graphic designer ain't my cup'a. My 2cents. Good luck designers!

      Would love to see this comment at the top. Obviously this is a promotional bit for Fiverr, so I'm guessing it's not possible for Will to be critical of a platform which strives on underbidding the market. It just seems problematic, in an almost paradoxical way, to promote this platform as a designer.

      Understandable that they charge that way since peeps are more on Quality and cheaper prices.
      They did deserve to charge more but they need to have multiple clients at a time to earn for a living. The 450$+ is almost a gamble ,of course there are lots that would rather find cheaper ones. So many competition,that kind of charge is understandable.

    3 & 5 were amazing. Loved them both. I think in the end if I was this CEO I would go with 3 because it is the simplest, the cleanest and the most design friendly but I would keep 5 for maybe extra promo materials in the future. Maybe when we add some new features. The rest - especially number 4 were pretty blah in my opinion. I liked 1 the most out of those other 3. And not the one you picked bc it looks like Facebook Meta.
