Having lived on the road with a Class A, we wanted to upgrade to a fifth wheel. I really did not want a dually, and this truck has been great so far. The truck is maxed out towing in both overall weight and pin weight.
The trucks payload rating is 4,350lbs and max towing is at 20,000lbs, so this is just about the biggest and heaviest camper this truck can tow.
I have got Sumo Springs on the rear, from when I had a truck camper but will possibly upgrade to airbags in time. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I have a 2021 Ram 3500 HO, SRW, LB, in white. Couldn’t be happier! Ordered it in Dec 2020, took till the end of April 2021 to arrive. (Loaded Laramie) 50 gal fuel, auto air bags and adaptive cruise control. My 5er is about 17k loaded toy hauler with 3 slides. Truck tows it with ease. I went from a 2003 Ram 2500 that I bought new in 03, so for me this was a massive upgrade and makes towing effortless. Great trucks!
I have a 2020 3500 HO, DRW, Laramie in black. We just did Cloudcroft from Texas; it was an easy day. RAM has a fantastic exhaust braking system,m and the truck didn't sweat it.
Ram makes a great truck for towing heavy. The Cummins and CP3 fuel pump helps resale when your truck gets over 150,000 miles.
I'm about to order a loaded up Laramie HO SRW almost identical configuration to your rig (going for the big fuel cell). This is exactly the kind of content I've been searching for while I shop this. We've aspirations of a toy hauler in the future, and didn't plan for something as massive as your Grand Design-- but nice to know it's an option! Sub'd.
That's awesome, glad it helped im sure a HO would feel better starting from a dead stop. I would have loved the Laramie as well but only had Big Horns at the dealers in my area.
We have a 2019 376th. It’s a heavy beast! Love the 48 gallon tank on our f350 dually. Actually looking to get a 50 gallon transfer tank in the bed before our Florida to Alaska trip next year. The small tank in the Dodge is a downer!
That's awesome,. Im a Ford guy all day, want the new 2023 model. If I had a dually I would add a large transfer tank, but I dont have all the much extra weight since I am maxing out my trucks payload.
I had a 21 ram like yours and the 5th wheel hitch was not that much of a hassle. But boy, we had a smooth ride with our 15k trailer. From your video, it looks a lot more rough
Also, use the Blue DEF platinum. It costs a little more but the cheap stuff and even the def from truck stops is not very good. It left urea crystals on my def injector which led me to getting a whole new DPF filter at over 4 grand. It was covered by warranty but we were down for 1 month waiting on parts. The truck had 60k miles when it went out. The platinum says it cleans out the crystals.
Good luck
It's smooth most of the time, biggest issue is chucking on bridge transitions and sometimes I'll have to gas it out or apply breaks to get it to stop. Yeh main reason was we wanted immediate access to a truck and didn't want deal with a bulky 5th wheel. and thanks for the DEF suggestion we are at 45k right now.
Got my same truck with my same Tenere 😊
We have a 22 3500 Laramie SRW HO and 50 gallon tank. We pull a Momentum 320G. I would agree the SO is just fine as far as power, the big benefit of the HO is the Aisin transmission. Set your exhaust brake to auto and you should not need to brake down hill but maybe once. Also, we have Sumo springs on the rear of the truck and both axles of the camper, helps the squat on the truck and the camper rides smoother. Happy travels.
That’s awesome, sounds like the exact truck I wish I would have gotten. I have sumo springs in the rear, but nothing in the camper yet, I’m curious if sumo springs would make the camper ride slightly higher since it doesn’t compress the springs as much?
@@Jamesandmaddie I don't believe I noticed any difference in ride height of the camper with the sumo springs. I ordered the truck, only way to really get what you want. ordering from a high volume dealer is also the best way to get large discounts.
The transmission has nothing to do with the exhaust brake. My current RAM 3500 DRW 6.7 has the Aisin, which is great, but the Chrysler trans in my last 3500 6.7 did great as well - never a problem with how it performed.
Mine came with the smaller tank and I had the 50 gallon installed. I was even able to keep the same sending unit.
Im debating on it, just alot of money.
Good luck with your cummins! I think you'll enjoy it and will be happy with the standard output. As to Ford, they have been having a lot of quality control issues from what I've heard, so maybe you're not missing anything! Safe travels
It's towed it across the US fine so far, but I've always been a Ford guy, can't help it!
@@Jamesandmaddie I hear ya. I've owned all of the big 3 and like my Fords as well.
Have a Ram as well. Ended up getting a Fuelbox toolbox that has a 40 gallon tank on a gravity feed. So nice to have a 600 mile range while towing. Any extra fuel tank would be handy. Enjoy the truck!
Thinking of the Titan 52 gallon replacement tank so I can still have an empty bed.
Agreed. I have a megacab and it supposedly doesn't fit. Either way, more range is nice for choosing where to fill up on your trip. Literally saved $20 on my first fill-up on the first trip. And was 450 miles from home. Didn't have to get any in the more expensive state we were visiting. 600 miles on that fill up. Towing.
I notice the auto exhaust brake glitches sometimes on my 5th gen ..kicking in too late
Actually run the brake in full with cruise. Keep you right there. Especially if the trailer is pushing you. If you're set at 70 it keeps it real light so you dont go over
S&B makes a tanks I believe the long bed one is like 60 gallons.
They do, im just cheap its alot of money.
I have the same truck and i tow a 40’ 5th wheel but this year I installed a 55 gallon gravity feed tank and I can go easy 850-875 miles. I just made a 5000 mile trip and not once did I need to stop for fuel with the rv hooked up.
That's the goal, I hate stopping for fuel. Im thinking the titan 52 gallon tank which should get me around 500 on flat ground and 400vin the mountains. 31 is way to small
I put a S&B 52 gallon fuel tank in my Mega Cab, we traveled about 300 miles a day, always filled up without trailer at night,, so much nicer then the 32 gallon tank,
Out of curiosity, have you put your rig on the cat scales to see how much weight is actually on your rear axle? I’m in the market for a Toy Hauler, and have a 2019 Ram 3500 HO Laramie Long Box SRW like yours with just shy of 4100 of payload. However I’m seeing pin weights of these trailers anywhere from 3000-3600 so just wondering if you had any issues with your drive axle?
my CCC is 4,350lbs. No I have not weighed it on a scale. I have had no issues, im probably right around my max on the rear axle but should be under I have a good amount of weight in my garage also. I drive with a full tank of water most father time too.
Since you made this video have you had any stability issues with the SRW? I bought the Larime HO 6.7 with the AISIN SRW. Were looking at Brinkly 20k total weight on the east coast so lots of grade changes. Appreciate any feed back.
my srw 3500 lbcc has not problem towing 17k my 37 foot 5th wheel no stability problem at all . the long wheel base has every little chucking also you cant even feel the camper behind you on a 500 mile trip. get the 50 gallon and the srw is so much easier to park. and has a 4200 lbs payload get airbag helps so much
I was told my 23 dually longbox had the big fuel tank. No dice. Quite pissed about that.
Yeh it's a nice upgrade to have from the factory and surely wish I had it.
Put the exhaust in auto and when coming down a grade and you find a speed you want touch the brakes and the transmission and exhaust brake will hold that speed...
That’s what I did, and that’s what worked. I’m saying in the video cruise control doesn’t work with auto exhaust brake.
When hauling shouldn't the exhaust brake be in FULL instead of AUTO? That heavy trailer is going to do a lot of pushing.@@Jamesandmaddie
@@fu4616 no becasue full kicks on whenever you let go of the gas which isn’t always wanted. Auto doesn’t it whenever you tap the brake. I use FULL when driving around town with traffic and stop and go
I would bet that you're over on the payload depth. If you where to scale it.
Ram and Dodge are separate companies and have been for 10 years.
It’s still a dodge. Always has been always will be. Kind of like cutting your weiner off and claiming to be a girl. You’re still a guy.
Cool video! I have your truck but different color and 50 gallon fuel tank.
Wish mine came with that!
@@Jamesandmaddieyou could probably find a upgrade. I know the hot shot guys install larger tanks. But you probably know all that. Good luck!
Wow
I got 2022 and wanted 50 gallon tank they told me wasnt available, so put 60gallon in bed plus 31 built in
I was debating that, but I really dont want to take up any bed space. Im also already close to maxing out this truck and an extra 60 gallons of fuel is alot of weight lol! I will probably do the Titan 52 gallon tank down the road.
I noticed you didn’t mention the hitch weight and payload of the truck.
Payload on my truck is 4,350. Pin weight is 3,250
Just FYI, that hitch weight is what is stated on GD website. That is UNLOADED not loaded. Should be about 18-22% of your total weight of your trailer is pin weight felt by the truck. So you are prob 4,000 pounds min on your pin weight, then you have to add what you and your wife weigh and whatever else you have in your truck too. I would be very surprised to find out you aren’t overweight. Have you taken your setup to a CAT scale? So easy to overload those TH.
@Jamesandmaddie probably should go scale that truck and trailer all loaded up. You might get surprised! Remember, each axle has to be within. Weight spec. Pretty sure your truck has a 7000 pound rear axle gross weight. I'm betting you are overweight. Be careful out there!
Have you done a full delete to your Ram? That would help your fuel economy
No, maybe after my 100k mile warranty. All stock.
Why didint you want the dually? Do you have a cdl?
I didn't want the extra width as its our only "car". My girlfriend drives it alot and already struggles with it being a crew cab long bed in and around town and I get better fuel mileage.
@@Jamesandmaddie the cdl laws limit it to low. Buy a gas dually 14k gvwr. Can’t tow anything near 20,000lbs. Kind of backs you into a corner. Then you might as well just get the dually 5500 for better payload lol
That exhaust brake is weird how it works.
Full or Auto with cruise on gives you a 5-6 mph over before it comes on if cruise is set
Full without cruise set comes in anytime you are not pressing throttle
Auto without cruise you use the brakes to set to X speed then let off the brakes . say 55 , don't turn the cruise on. The Auto EB will now keep you around 53-58.
Ram does a piss poor job of explaining how to use it properly
Yup, I agree with all those numbers generally. I prefer not to use cruise control unless im towing on level ground anyway I prefer to feel in control.
a Titan fuel tank will take care of the 32 gallon oem tank.
Yeh I looked into it but not worth the price to me. Alot cheaper to have it optioned from the factory.
in bed 40 gallon aux tank
We have the 3500 DRW with the 50 gallon tank and $250 fill-ups in the west have been a shock to the wallet !
Im sure, but id rather fill up less!
@@Jamesandmaddie Yeah, I'm glad I don't have a motorhome with a 100 gallon tank!
Point camera out the window
I plan on making another video, I agree with you.
How much are you overweight with that srw and that trailer? Be careful, you wreck that thing or someone else wrecks you and there can be huge consequences!
He has over 4K lbs payload. He’s probably within specs
Underweight
You got the wrong transmission my friend
nope its perfectly fine my freind
SO w/ 68RFE is more than capable.
Full exhaust brake is what you want.
