How Korea's Beloved Champion Became China's Hometown Hero: The Story of Rookie

- If there’s one thing that can be said about the bubbly, compassionate and inspirational competitor that is Song “Rookie” Eui-jin, it’s this: he’s a fighter.
At so many points in his career, he could’ve given up and gone home. People told him he should give up. But he didn’t. He took the road less traveled, and it made all the difference.
But that’s what’s made Rookie such an inspiration to so many people: his stubbornness. His ability to commit, to stick things out. To persevere.
And this is his story.

I like how Faker's basically a unit of measurement for understanding just how exceptional a pro is xD
When you are the best in the world that’s always the case
It's weird though because I feel like Faker hasn't been that impressive in the past 2 years and that maybe he wasn't such an insane mid laner anymore. But then again I don't watch LCK and only see his games at MSI / Worlds
@@KeenestObserver He's really good but in comparison of his years of being a "god" it's nowhere near
@@KeenestObserver the gap between him and other mids has definitely been shrunk, and he's taking more of a flex role rather than being the primary carry
When you have doubt like that go rewatch the zed vs zed against ryu just to remember that mainly faker level has decreesed not that others are that good to fight him
Goodness please make a “Story of Ambition”. He was the top midlaner of Korea before he met Faker in his debut match, and was destroyed. Then after years of hardship, swapping teams and even his primary role, he met Faker in 2 World Finals, finally finding his revenge in 2017 against Faker, in the largest stage of LoL ever.
PLEASE! Also he just won an award for his career last night.
Ambition or Score in my Opinion. With the Move that the face of the KT Rolster left the Organization is pretty Hard. But Ambition deserves it too. With the World Finals 2017 got Ambition his revenge.
He found his revenge with his partner in crime SSG Bang
Ulol
YES PLEASSEEE he truly deserves at least a video
I don’t even follow League but I’ve watched every single League video you guys have made.... just incredibly produced content
Same

Pepehands they don't bring up that rookie was away from IG because of family issues during the summer split
yeah that's what most iG skeptics during summer and worlds didn't want to acknowledge. They just wanted the narrative that TL tilted them forever, and would do so again in the groups.
Something else people don't want to acknowledge? TL's MSI finals run is not that impressive. Their win rate across the whole tournament was only 7-10. That's a negative won-loss differential. When you win less than 50% of your games (41%) and still are 2nd place, what does that say about the tournament format? Even iG who lost to them had a win rate of 71%.
steven vergara wow i didnt know this. Thx
@@lostn65 well if you go 6:0 at worlds groups and win every game in playins but lose 0:3 in quarters , does that make it a bad format aswell?
The problem is not that you can go negative winrate the problem is that almost everyone makes it out of msi groups
28:34 was epic, the casters wilding, rookie's pinnacle of success, the music, the setting, just everything was perfect!
I love those chinese casters. you can genuinely feel their joy and happiness.
As a Chinese myself I can't stress enough of how much Rookie was appreciated by Chinese players. He's seen as a national hero despite being a Korean.
its not like he was the only black kid in a white school XD
even the new players of the LPL are inspired by him. Knight, the most notorious promises of Pro players in china says that Rookie is his reason for play LoL, V5 Mole says "i'm not the Faker of the North, I am the Rookie of the North. Faker doesnt matter for me" . Knight is so huge fan of Rookie that he hug him when IG win Top Esports
worlds 2018 was a joy to watch. rookie and theshy absolutely bossing everything and everyone. rookies a true legend.
but the final match is kinda meh tbh but both rookie and theshy is a beast
@@pikachusunbaenim8024 KT vs IG was the final, and it was fantastic!
Nice job, Rookie deserves his story.
Can you make "The story of Theshy"? Would appreciate it :)
We definitely need TheShy. He was a name in korea even before going pro.
Theshy is like 20, there isn't much to say compared to Rookie
@@ehorn9646 you sure? :^)
He was a good soloq player and a streamer, 2017 joined IG, ok run with 3rd place, no worlds, 2018 better run, wins worlds, 2019 same but doesnt win worlds... i like theshy, and i know theres a big hype about him since 2018 worlds, but i dont see any reason to make a story video like this about him, not much to tell, maybe few years later
His story isn't finished yet though, there's so much left for him to do
You guys made me cry with this, love this guy and his optimistic humor.
I am watering right now, Rookie was literally reborn from the flames, glory, fall and glory again... This man deserves his reputation and respect. This is heart-renching and hope giving
I would've done a quick mention about how important theshy was in the worlds run. He was the 2nd best player in the tournament after rookie, they literally stomped everyone together
i lyk lck but theshy is the best player rn xd dat dude issa a monster
He was the best that year no joke
After rookie? Nah he was way more important than rookie
Idk the video is about rookie and 34 minutes long, I think it highlights that rookie has always been good, but needed the right team to finally do it. Everyone on their championship roster was good, even if theshy was clearly the best member.
@@Anonymous-td9fl not sure about that year but it's obvious that theshy is the best player of ig rn and prob best player in the world
This was so heartfelt. I love the story of Rookie.
I find myself always loving these story of videos despite not playing most of the games besides CSGO. They are so well made and some of the best content on YT!
I love this guy. Especially his rise to winning worlds and being overcame with emotion, that had to the best moment of 2018.
These stories keeps on getting better and better. This made me cry.
Honestly, I don't even care what game it is... These videos are so dope! Can't wait for when I have enough clout for yall to make a video on my twitch/ pro career
AndySlaps that’s mighty confident to think that you would get there...
@@mixbag8399 Yes sir, I gotta go for my dream somehow, No matter what It takes being in one of these videos was just added to one of my goals! :D
@@AndySlaps That is a good goal
they are gonna be like - *he even commented on one of our videos 2 years ago*
@@vasilleff8948 exactly, just wait for project a to drop you will know my name :P
Was literally just watching game 2 of fpx vs ig worlds 2019
one of the best games of all time. "TIAN, WHY ARE YOU ON THE CHICKENS" like that series is the whole reason i've started watching LPL games now
If you liked FPX vs IG in Worlds Semis then you should definitely watch FPX vs IG in LPL Spring 2020. It is just as good as Semis if not better.
There's a famous meme in Chinese League community "You can always put your trust in Song eui-jin (Yes they call Rookie by his real name), and you can occasionally put your trust in Li Yuanhao (RNG Xiaohu)" This cracks me up everytime. But it kinda shows how consistent Rookie is even compared to other world class midlaners.
I almost cried. Great video. Rookie is a legend
Thanks, this was amazing, as i've been myself too following Rookie from 2017, he is finally recognized around the world, the true legend of Invictus Gaming.
That base race was so hectic I still love it!
this is so well put together, deserves more views
Well, guess I’m an IG fan now. These videos are so amazing, I’ve never played LOL but thanks to all these stories I’m emotionally invested in a bunch of teams and players which makes watching it so much fun! Thank you
Some oldschool players pls. Madlife, Dandy, KaKAO, Weixiao,Dade, the hell even Mata hasnt got one of these.
MADLIFE!
@@spaceybread the godfather of carry supports
I also want one for ambition
most of them either retired young or fell off and never got back up.
If uzi wins a worlds title though, you can bet there will be a story on him.
@@lostn65 there is going to be a story on him regardless
There is already one
With Clearlove leaving his player carrer behind he deserves his video. One of the best stories from zero to hero to being the most hated player to being a hero again.
thanks for this video, really enjoyed it.
Yo whoever edited this video deserves a promotion. I've come back to this video at least 3 times to help me with my own editing and to study the technique.
One of the most humble and beloved players in the scene. Thanks thescore
Rookie is just a dude! A credit to his team and to League as a whole. So nice and so humble.
You guys make such great spotlight pieces on individual players. Loved the Faker video too
As I've been expanding my knowledge of esports in new games (to me) these videos have been helping alot with creating a general understanding of the scene and its storylines
Finally the video we wanted
amazing work guy's! keep up the content
I'ma be honest with you, my League account is like level 14, I don't understand how professional League of Legends works, I don't know the teams or players aside from the very top tier, but every time you make a league video, I always watch it. Not only are you that good at creating entertaining content, but your ability to explain it is what makes it so accessible. Great content, keep it up!
this is the quality content i subscribed for
Been waiting for this video since they won Worlds...... thankyou TheScore !!!!
Please make ”The story of Theshy” would be amazing
here's the story: he was a really good solo queue player. He got signed by iG. He won worlds on his first season as a pro. The end.
What more is there to tell? What he did as a teen before he was legal to play?
The Shy doesn't have a huge story as Rookie, Ambition or Score.
TheShy is a krorean, who went to China in the Great Korean Exodus (Nov 2014). For Team WE as a Streamer for a year (Nov 2014 - Dec 2015) but kept his residency in Korea. While Streaming for WE, He Joined for a Month in Rebels Anarchy (Dec 2014 - Jan 2015) (later known as Afreeca Freecs) but left. After that, he joined a Team called awe max (where 0 Information exists in lol.gamepedia) (Mar 2015 - Apr 2015). After that 0 Information exits, so TheShy joined in May 2017 Invictus Gaming as a Sub for Duke. After 2017 Rise of iG and TheShy was the Starting Toplaner for iG. went to Rift Rivals 2018 with other LPL Teams and won, Worlds 2018 won with Rookie, LPL Winner in Spring 2019, Failed at MSI vs TL, got to worlds as Chinas 3rd seed. Lost in Semis against FPX.

3:18 hearing montecristo gives me goosebumps that guy is such a legend caster!
Gotta love Rookie.
But I feel like Mata deserves one of these.
If he's gonna get a great success in his coaching career thennyou bet he's gonna have one in the future
@@clyyy6655 how come he doesnt already have one, his career would probably make an hour long video
Ghost Writer Madlife deserves it more
Please do a redo of The Story of Faker. Not only would this video be
much better quality wise but his story has gone upwards since and
is more interesting now than ever
Yes Rookie
We all love rookie so much
Damn this is playing with my emotions, I don't even follow the lpl
Awh yes another 30min doc.
seeing Deft and Mata reminded me of the greatest botlane to ever touch the game. Deftly and Matt 🙏🏾
Love the Frost in the description!
I like him.. He deserves all the best things👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Well,it's summer 2020,and IG is popping off again, and Rookie is still going strong.
this is why i am subscribed.
Legend
i dont play LOL but this video is just insane. its full on hype and it makes me want to play it.
I've been kind of interested in esports these days. Never played games that much but this looks really fun
The community around esports these days is so passionate
Welcome !
We need story of WeiXiao. He is the original adc superstar, he is the only player who is able to mention with UZI. He was so decorative in the early days it’s unreal. The adc role is supposed to play like he did even atm
This is bananas.
I'm from eu but rookie's story is so cool
we need this video for TheShy!! He and WBG just beat V5 and gave them their first loss this split
Definitely should make a Story of Doinb! His story is just amazing
The story of Rookie(ft. JackeyLove and TheShy) xD
rookie and doinb are my lpl favs
one of the few Koreans who commited to the LPL, Rookie became the longest to commit without retiring yet or leaving for just staying for 2 years like Deft
I like this dude since he was in KT Arrows happy for him winning his first Summers Cup in 2018
i want one for Ambition he deserves a video and he deserved to be known
You can always believe in Rookie!
I never played LoL but this video was Amazing!
The shy next plss
His story still amazes me and the only thing i can say about him is that he's dedicated
dude your introes... they are insane hype
not a LoL player, but these videos are just amazing.
the shy didnt get his hand broken from cooking, they were drunk and he fell. apparently this injury has got him free from joining military service. This could be meaning a good thing yet you can tell it was quite severe.
Koreans are a different beast in league of legends
But not in LCK, lol. Playstyle means everything.
Daniel Chen I am sorry. Have you heard Faker?
Sam Kim yah a Korean mid laner has won the last 8 or 9 world championships.
I mean, it is kinda cringy for koreans themselves to say something like this.
Favorite player all of time. Fucking love this guy
It feels like the current team feels like the most balanced and look like a real threat. But after all i somehow still hope that rookie and theshy come back to korea because i think there is so much talent in china that deserves to get a shot in their league. Probably the next xiahu or uzi are just waiting for their chance.
true but it's the same with korea. all the rookies there are monsters xd
Story of Doinb is also very legendary
I saw rookie last year I usually only watch Korea NA and EU. I saw theshy and rookie. Like god dam
liked before the first minuted lol... again
does anyone know what the song was at the start of the esports awards video. the dubstep one?
Story of Score
To honor his retirement
Gotta make one about the shy dude ends up becoming one of the scariest players in league. Might be best toplaner of all time now
The Shy doesn’t really have a story though, he is only 20 and his career has been relatively short so not much to tell
First, love you guys
Grande Rookie~!
I don't know why but I feel JackeyLove is gonna win a few more trophies soon, make sure to make a video on him too :D
I love rookie’s story lmao
My best mid laner!
the first clip in 2017 then the second you see iG’s worlds roster appearing.
Duke, Megan (Baolan) then in the next Ning & TheShy appear
All these people asking for Stories of Jackeylove and TheShy.... those guys have only played a handful of years... there isn’t much of a story prior to them joining IG.
Shy was a streamer for WE that joined IG in 2017 it’s not a long career.
Jackeylove was picked up by IG in 2016 as a trainee but didn’t play and then this split landed on TOP.
These guys are new players so there isn’t a long history to tell they are just the popular players at the moment.
5:34 casting at its peak
Rookie's time in the sun has finally come. Now where's Theshy? The guy is a freaking maniac at league and is arguably the best top laner in the world!
Rookie had never won a Chinese title.... yet had won worlds that still amazes me.
It’s actually mad for a player to win worlds before a domestic title.
IG at the beginning of worlds 2018: Oh yeah it's all coming together
Story of Doinb should be fitting right now
Please do a video on LPLs new team eStar!
I can't stand how rookie looks so sad this season
I love Rookie
20:00 one of the few times where we can see TheShy and Marin be 2/6 LMAO
Rookie, a Korean-born champion, who became China's hometown hero, won his biggest title on his homeland, Korea.
4:29 anyone know the seperate clip of this interview?
What's up with that Background Music. Fck man Am crying
Can we get story of Caster Jun? The man who can hype up even the worst crowd ever?
