May I add, best to get a tool that you can handle.

Too many people have too many movie & tv fantasies and get a high-power weapon that they know nothing about. And, especially do not know how to maintain nor use properly. If you want such a tool, best to GET TRAINING FROM A CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR.
I found the best instructors are those who are good reputed former LEO's, certifed to instruct, or reputed former Military, who are certified to instruct. If one is an inexperienced civilian, THEY SHOULD SEEK THOSE OUT FIRST & FOREMOST, BEFORE BUYING A FIREARM.

Paintball fighting! I know it's not life and death, but it sure can be painful. And you are shooting at a target that is shooting back at you.
Correct, once caught a paintball that went under my facemask, hurt like a sob.
I got shot from 10 feet in the neck. Had a huge bruise for 6 weeks
Have you ever had to use your paintball training in an active self defense situation? If not, do you know how it translates? It specifically being a “safe” environment does not train you to handle stressful situations. Take your paintball training with a grain of salt, and expand your skillset, by expanding your exposure to uncomfortable and stressful situations. Do not take sporting games as the end all be all.
Probably the most realistic training method without possibly having to die in the process. Actual combat being the most realistic, but there is a downside.

I frequently see people leaving windows down and running at gas stations....crazy. The ONLY time my car doors are not locked is when it is inside my garage with garage door is closed
I'm thinking his employer did not allow him to carry a loaded gun, so he carried one with blanks to "scare" someone. He was only 2 feet from the window and fired twice with no effect. That's hard to miss. That may explain why he was so quick to pull his gun, in his mind, it wasn't a deadly confrontation. That may also explain why he stood in the middle of the road after. I dont think he was in the mortal combat mindset.
Of course, this is all pure speculation. But it's weird that none of his shots had any effect.

He should never worried about a company vehicle
Are we sure he had an actual firearm? That sounded like a starter pistol, looked like a starter pistol, and failed to break glass from point blank range, it doesn't seem possible tha he was actually firing projectiles???
A starter pistol is still a real gun. Rimfire is deadly but not effective
He obviously didn't practice, and they didn't appear to be leaving the barrel, so maybe they were squib loads. My Father carried his revolver for a long time with the same ammunition, and when we went to shoot it, they were all squibs, his sweat had gotten into the cartridges and rendered them useless, we had to push each one out of the barrel with a cleaning rod. If you carry a revolver, you need to seal the ammo neck and primer or swap out the ammo each month, and that's also a good excuse to fire a few rounds to stay proficient.
i prayed for this mans family and friends, first and foremost. Lack of training with his firearm was the cause of losing it all, situational awarness was non existant.

As a Texan, I have very little respect for law-enforcement. It seems that nowadays all they want to do is harass law abiding citizens, and write citations to people who work an actual job. They will sit outside of a school and listen to gunfire, even when there is a couple dozen of them. They will arrest parents who are tired of them doing nothing …and are trying to go in to stop it. A gun NEVER guarantees that your going to win a fight, only give you a fighting chance. Also, if his marksmanship was better the dude in the truck wouldn't have been to incapacitated or dead to have done that.
I don't know of any IDPA match that includes a scenario for being mowed down by your truck.
In this case the guy used poor tactics , didn't seek cover or really a solid barricade. In retrospect that part had nothing to do with the shooting. Anyone of the others ( I counted 3 ) people could have been mowed by the same truck or the guy could have rammed any of the nearby cars and it's occupants.
And the fact the guy looked overweight and couldn'r "get out of the way" did not help him either.
One thing he did do right at1st, when the threat started to leave ( or what he thought ), he stop firing but what really happen was the unarmed carjacker now becomes armed with a gun called a 8k plus lb work service truck.
I guess in the end the lesson here to learn is never bring a gun to a truck fight
