- Nitrocellulose, a key component of modern propellants, is becoming hard to source. Is this the start of another ammo shortage?

The ammo hoarding and price gouging schtick is really getting old...thanks for being a voice of reason.
Thanks a bunch and thanks for watching!
I agree. People should learn. I did. I'm "fine," ammo-wise. I may purchase enough to top off a target ammo "box," or not. I'm good, for a while. I keep enough for family and myself. Why people don't learn?!
I've thought for YEARS that they were ploys from ammo companies. It's really easy to prey on insecurities around *security*.
The US is sadly enough, an importer of a lot of stuff that we used to make. The medicine is one of the scariest of all.
That's starting to change. The US government is investing a lot to encourage onshoring of production capabilities, but it will take years for it to take hold.
@@Mike80528You mean the same people who sold our jobs to China in the first place? The same who told us the C hinavirus originated 6 feet from a virus lab we funded? Lots of luck.
Keep shopping amazon, and keep the Chinese strong
Ammunition has become expensive but it's still available.
I'm seeing a good stock everywhere.
I disagree. In central MN. The prices have stayed same. Maybe you need to talk to your supplier.
@@harrygrimley4352 I'm in East Texas. The Federal Fusion we 150 grain 30 06 I shoot went from 22 dollars a box to 31 at most stores.
@@RickNethery you’re getting ripped off if you buy at that price.
@Hornet135 Yea, but to order online, you've got to pay shipping.
Haha jokes on you ammo, I'm still shooting stock from 2019.
I'm doing the same! I actually have the 2016 CCI Christmas ammo.

I got caught with my ammo cans down way back when the rona hit, but now I'm good for at least 5 years if things dry up.

Nitrocellulose is like 90% of gunpowder
Yes, massively important to modern propellants.
@@PatRMG I’ve had to put in some big orders at work to try and keep testing up, some for the election concerns and some for the nitrocellulose issue. It’s tough to get PMs and buyers on board when they don’t read the tea leaves the same.
@@PatRMG also, I wrote the comment before the ads had quit.
Farmers in the USA have had to pay through the nose for crop fertilizer this year. A lot of it comes from Russia.
People have synthesized it at home using hardware store components and cotton balls, they have a baking soda solution in a cup just in case they get splashed
Heading home from shooting out to 400 yds and it was the most fun I've had with my pants on in a long time!

Another critical item we have outsourced to another country to the detriment of the country.
So I sold my only 9MM, a Marlin Camp Carbine about one year ago. Recently I picked up a Astra A-75 and Smith and Wesson 539. Gave 500 rounds of 9MM I had loaded to my buddy after I sold my rifle. I am kicking myself now
Thanks Pat,.. We did hear about that this winter as well.. It's a simple compound to make chemically, And it's America, where there's a dollar to be made, someone will do it. We need this stuff to be made here in the USA anyway, so silly we rely on importing so much
US made gun cotton!
powder locally is running $50-60 a pound and $400-450 per 8# jug. The LGS near me says to expect another 25%-50% increase over the next year....if they can get it at all. Everything is back ordered per them.
Magnum primers are non-existent right now
No one sold as much ammo as Obama getting elected did tho 🎉😂❤ reigning champ on that one
I laughed every time!
Where I live the price on all ammo has over doubled to tripled in price . Cant afford to even think about using anymore .
In the past few ish months i have been working on making my own gunpowder. Granted I am making black powder, but it still slings lead. And at 3 dollars for a pound of the home made stuff.. it is worth it having on stand by. Even if it is just ran through lever actions and bolt actions.
Plenty effective within 200 yards, well within ranges that most conflicts would be taking place in.
Black powder works just fine in most revolvers too.
Pat. Good and informative video. Thanks for sharing and for the heads up. Makes me thankful that I have some powder for reloading! Take care.
Glad it was helpful!
This is no different than the many channels selling fear porn, telling viewers that SHTF, WW3, food shortages etc will happen early next week and they need to watch their fear porn videos if they want to survive.
I am a ak47 guy, if I did not stock up about 3-4 years ago I would be spending double or more right now. Last year 223 was $350 for a case then it went up to $450 overnight. Stocking up is not panic buying, because once it does start flying off the shelves because it will you can just sit back and watch all the people that said I won’t pay that much or I’ll buy when I go shoot have to run to the store and spend more cash than they would of because they waited. By no means am I saying go broke and spend all your money on ammo but I’ve been in the game for 25 years and one thing ammo does not do is get cheaper. This is my opinion but it does feel nice to know I can go shoot whenever I want without worrying about restocking every time.
Yeah, that's the cool thing about having a good stock of ammo. Not having to worry about replenishing in a hurry after range trips.
Nothing gets cheaper over the long term thanks to inflation, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t times of relatively cheap and relatively expensive ammo. 2017-2019 was a lot better than 2020-2022. We’re never going back to $100 per thousand of 5.56, but we’re much better off as far as prices than we were in the last few years. Buy during the dips so you don’t need to buy when prices are high.
if you need more... you can get black powder pistols... 6 shot, same drill, no id. permits. Higher calibre than any pistol on market.
You can reload shotgun shells with black powder..I reload with 00 lead, black powder, to make my own buck shot. Though i dont Hunt, my targeting and practice resuits in how to do Larping and tactical. So i have learned the high art of making black powder and munitions in the field..like a true tabbed Ranger should.
There a many skills ive learned. How to make the equivelent to claymore mines. perimeter protection. Using natural material
to make large traps..Nothing i do is illegal because its black powder, entirely legal ... farmers for years use these methods in rural areas to keep preditors like bears away
.. the Sheriff here knows... its to keep preditiors away.
I don't get it, There's so many channels screaming from the rooftops that there's currently or about to be a shortage but it's been months and I see no indication of the sort, I really hope they aren't being paid to all say the same thing, That subscription list will get thinned.
The sky is falling this time, I promise! -sarcasm

I was "lucky" in late '23 being able to grab some of the last batch of Lake City 5.56 for 2019 prices, then it all went up. I wish I'd bought more this month, but I'm good for a "while." I learned, moons ago, about ammo fluxes. May purch enough to top off a target shooting "box" or not. I'm good. Heard the rumors, got the update, like you. But, thanks!
yeah but once ammo price goes up does it really go back down to what it was? Probably not.
Yeah, what goes up does not come down.
That damn Nick Cage again!
Man how much I dislike the companies that do the fear mongering. This stuff happens a couple times per year at least. Yup, if you’re stocked up, no need to fear. What we do need to fear are the chicken little types that feed into this and buy stuff up. Hate those little peckers!
The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
All good points sir. I am a good shot. I get out a couple times a year to familiarize. I don't need to run through rounds. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.
yep. Like riding a bike.
I haven’t really seen the prices go down. Ok yes they are down from the vid era but not 2019 and back prices. It’s available for the most part all the common stuff for sure. But a 50 round box of cheap 9mm is still 15 to 20 bucks and that is better then a few year ago but still high. 556/223 little higher then that. Locally came across some tulammo for what brass 556 used to cost so I grabbed a bunch of course that I wouldn’t feel so bad for just blasting or ringing steel. I have been doing this for god many years I go every week and just buy a few boxes of whatever and it adds up I don’t clear shelves out or anything I just get a little hear an there. I focus on 9mm and 223 that I keep buying no matter what. But for some of the other guns calibers I have 3to 500 is good for me,I don’t shoot them as often so why buy it out and screw everyone else who uses those as primary calibers. The last few years brought some slimy people out in the gun world with gouging prices was really sad cause I always say the firearms community are some of the nicest people the best America has to offer and I understand capitalism and making money it’s the American way but to really stick it to people when there hurting to make even more is again just sad.
Great video. I need more desiccant packs. You think about putting plywood rather than drywall on the gun rack wall?
No need to find studs...one could mount things anywhere rather than 16 oc.
The gun wall itself is a system of aluminum panels. I will screw the aluminum slats 16 oc and the grooves will be infinitely adjustable.
I see. I figured as much. Good luck with it!
Like your content. I gotta say however that the plastic behind you may cause mold. In upstate NY it gets cold and water condensesbetween the plastic and the drywall causing mold. They stopped that practice many years ago. I'd imagine in the south that the water would condense on the other side of the plastic in the summer when you have the AC on. Just a friendly warning
I'm torn about keeping the plastic up. I put it on those two walls in particular for a couple or three reasons.
First is stinkbugs and those ladybug looking aphids. That wall gets the perfect sun for them to congregate on. The siding on the outside will be crawling with them when they hatch. I want to seal the ingress of the stinkbugs and aphids. There is Great Stuff foam and whatnot covering penetrations and the plastic is just another stopping point.
Next is wind. That wall gets a steady ripping of wind off the mountain. It's a weather wall that doesn't exactly face South. I do not want all the wind ripping through.
Third is just noise. It is quiet at my house.... UNTIL I TURN THE CAMERA ON. As soon as I start to film, the highway department will decide to idle a diesel truck in front of my house for 45 minutes. Stop air molecules from moving and you stop some level of sound.
The plastic will likely come down. I'm still weighing options.
RoaR
Pizza!
I am called bull. I feel it a cash grap to try and price us out of the market since democrats can't take the guns, but they seem to get help on ammo side.
Gun control through ammo.
People need to figure out that this is all planned out to simply increase sales, relax and buy normal 😊😊😊
So the USA can't grow gun cotton?
Absolutely we can grow tons of cotton. Sounds like a planning and willingness to pay farmers a few more cents per bale.
Funny that before any important items America was doing fine 😮
This why you should start think about arturnvite gun like big bore air gun or make your own gun powder
I'm seeing prices go down & plenty of stock in about every caliber.
Some guns are relatively cheap also.
Buy a couple boxes a month or a LITTLE more than what you shoot a month and keep a surplus of what you don't. That way you have a decent supply!! Don't buy 1000 rds at a time unless you just bought a new caliber or buy the common calibers which you should already have ammo for! 22, 9mm, 45, (and revolver calibers) 556, and two more common rifle calibers one small one bigger (6mm, 30 cal). If you do it this way you should always have a surplus and actually be gaining in rds over time
How could we as a nation allow China to be our primary supplier of this critical componant?
Ammo is being bought at an unprecendented rate so there is going to be shortages.
The every election year shortage...
Yup, who had election year shortage on their bingo card?
Guessing that regulation is kneecapping production of nitrocellulose in the US, it really doesn't seem like the base components to make it are uncommon or expensive.
Two specific firearms they can not take so long as you are legal of cours, not a felon. Your black powder , be it rifle or pistol or both. OR your shotguns. You can have a semi auto shotgun in any state of usa. Double 00 buck shot will stop anything coming at you.Bears included. A 50mm black powder, muzzle loader can drop a armoured vehicle if you place the hit right. In the civil war, it wasnt uncommon that a single muzzle loader black powder shot took.off a head and splintered the skull to fragments...just so you know.
Academy sports has Monarch brass 9mm for 22 cent a round.
Hollywood doesnt do.justice for the origional musket ball size, like the movie The Patriot shows that little ball from melted toy soldiers...well a true musket ball is triple that size and will go through your vehicles engine block.
A lead projectile going through a steel engine block ? I don't think so . Even a .72 cal. which is the biggest commonly used in the day.
Sounds like Biden has had someone put this out
If someone else raised this question, my apologies but why is it Vista Outdoors has not made this statement on their own media page?
Visited the local suburban gun store. Not only is nothing selling through a good long slump, today was the lowest selling day of the slump for them. Wanted to sell a piece and they weren't interested in buying, except on trade for something (used or new), and the value they were offering was a couple hundred lower than tolerable. They are flush with stuff under glass. Horde and shortage what?!
Gun inventories are solid right now. I've been to several well stocked stores lately. Like you said "flush" is what I'm seeing.
So now we are moving to electric bullets ?
The EB movement is real.
So are they saying that China is the only country that can make nitrocellulose? No one else has the knowledge of ability?
This is ridiculous. Nitrocellulose is easy to make.
Can anyone tell me where the hell all the blue dot went???
"Ammo storages" affect FUDDs who only shop at their local gun store. There is a MILLION ammo sites online with plenty of ammo all the time. Now some people might bitch about price, but they might as well as cry about a gallon of gas being $0.40 and a pack of cigarettes were $0.05 back in their day, we get it, but stop living in the past Boomer! Prices will NEVER return to pre-2020 due to a number of factors, inflation, supply chain, gun grabbers, but prices aren't bad and I typically buy 9mm around $0.20-$0.26 per round, 556 & 300 BLK around $0.45-$0.65 per round. I see so many comments like "Until ammo goes back down too $0.05 a round I'm not buying any, I have 1,000 rounds and that's all I need." Ok well save one to put in your head during SHTF.
At no point has it been difficult to get ammo.... even during covid.
I had problems finding factory loaded 30-30 and 45-70 because the mainstream calibers took a priority on the production lines during covid.
And yet pretty much every store in Phoenix az was sold out of 556/309 and 9mm for almost 3 years. As soon as the pallet hit the shelves they were gone the same day. Then the stores would t get another shipment for almost a month
Dude you can make nitrocellulose and gun powder at home yourself look it up!
In the past 2 years you would have better luck catching a snipe they a can of alliant powder.
Ok, being southern does not give license to butcher language. Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the declaration of Independence and was from the south. Andrew Jackson though quite profane was quite literate. One of the top statesmen of the 20th century, Cordell Hull was also southern.
