    A sensible, practical, and cheap, in the best way, solution to lighting a safe. I use the little magnetic led lights from ikea. Your solution is more permanent. But then yours is bigger and goes deeper than mine....que the innuendo! Onwards and upwards friend!

    Great idea, Yankee(8-). Thanks for sharing. And there are some other products out there for similar projects. Spicing the cord with crimp connectors if great...but then a covering of heat shrink tubing is a good idea. And hot glue makes a good grommet for the hole...but deburr the hole and then grommet it. And silicon rubber would work too. And a Golden rod might work a little better than your light string,
    but you aren't the kind that'd put a gun away "dry" anyhow (bet you've "oiled 'em
    down" a little with something), so they'll be fine.

    What gun or guns would you buy with $15,000? Personally I would buy the welrod because it was the first internally suppressed handgun and it was also bolt action also to change out the mag you would take off the grip. It's just an interesting and weird gun that I like.

    • @decnet100
      @decnet100 Před 10 lety

      Or, if you wanted automatic control - for those who would be bothered if they left the light on for weeks after forgetting to check the switch on the floor right next to the safe - one could always go with one of the many door activated switches ("lever switches") available for ~$3-5 at radio shack etc. Go with a DPDT variant and install both wires of your power cord to the lights so that the contact is broken when the switch is pressed, there you go.

    I went with the MIGHTYLIGHT. Small. Battery operated. Bright LED and it's motion activated. With a little creativity, I was able to mount them on the wall of the safe and they keep it nice and bright. This way, if I need to go into the safe during a power outage, I will always have it lit - as long as I stay on top of battery usage, which is low.

    Well done! I put up 2 little stick-on, battery operated, 3 led lights. You push on the center and they come on, push again they go off. They cost about the same as the ropes even though I bought them at ace hardware. I must admit that your rope lights do a much better job of lighting the whole safe (mine doesn't do so well towards the bottom.)

    Just as a question why not spend like 20-30 bucks a pair of LED motion activated battery powered lamps? they come in several slim designs that would fit in the same space, it would provide the same amount of light and eliminate the need to drill a hole in the safe?

      ah, side notes, would not drilling a hole void your safes warranty? as well as compromise its water and fireproof? also how hard was it to drill (as I thought most mid to high end safes where designed to be drill resistant/bit chewing)? and what bit did you use?

      @TheBerettaGuy Před 10 lety

      The liberty lights I've seen (on their website) are battery operated wands that you can mount in there, and they are 50 bucks. I think the hour or two he spent along with the $18.00 is a much better solution. If Yankee Marshall is anything like me, he probably gets pretty good satisfaction by saving a little money (to go towards things... like more guns) and doing a little project here and there.

    note that if you have a fire/water proof safe, you probably just scratched both those off the list and if you have any kind of warranty you probably successfully voided it. lastly, i'm not sure about this one but it's something to look into. your home owners insurance might not cover the loss of your guns if you've tampered with the safe?

      @RadRed44 Před 10 lety +3

      TheYankeeMarshal
      dang few if any gun safe is truly firePROOF. Most better ones are fire RESISTANT for a period of time. You shouldn't expect a $900 safe to save your guns if your house burns to the ground. You spend a few grand for a good quality safe, it probably will. Getting the contents insured is still a good idea, though.

    • @shootgp
      @shootgp Před 10 lety

      RadRed44
      Absolutely correct! Most gun safes use "Dry Wall" inside them to provide fire protection/resistance. In my 'gun closet', I have a fairly cheap safe with a crappy fire rating. However, drywall cost $7 for an 8x4' piece. I plan on adding an extra layer or two to each of the interior walls and ceiling, along with an exterior house door to that closet (exterior doors are insulated and stronger). While I don't know how much that would help in a fire, I'm sure it would be quite a bit (think of how a thermos works, and gypsum doesn't burn, part of the reason your interior house walls are made of it (also because it's cheap))... I'll also add 3" screws to the striker plate and a dead bolt to that door. For about $100, I think I can double the fire rating for my $450 safe and make my collection more secure; if not, at least it will make me feel better (and look kinda cool).
      And yes, I have insurance, two policies actually; NRA and Home Owners, however I'm unsure of how to two could work together or co-mingle.
